U.S. President Donald J. Trump speaks during the Victory Rally by the Republican National Committee in Dalton, Georgia, United States on January 04, 2021. The Trump campaign attacked the Biden administration and the Department of Justice in a furious statement after the grand jury investigating interference in the 2020 election handed up an indictment. The campaign in a statement did not explicitly say that Trump had been indicted in the special counsel's probe. But his campaign wrote that that "the answer is, election interference!" "President Trump has always followed the law and the Constitution, with advice from many highly accomplished attorneys," the statement said.

Lawyers for Donald Trump were told Thursday by prosecutors to expect an indictment against the former president in connection with his efforts to reverse his loss in the 2020 election, NBC News reported. At around the same time, the grand jury that could soon vote on criminally charging Trump assembled in Washington federal court. A number of those anonymous grand jurors were spotted in the cafeteria and then going to the grand jury room on the courthouse's third floor, according to NBC. Trump last week revealed that Smith had told his lawyers on Sunday that the former president was a criminal target of that investigation and had been offered a four-day window to testify to the grand jury. Smith in early June obtained a grand jury indictment of Trump in Florida federal court on several dozen criminal counts related to his retention of classified government documents at his Mar-a-Lago club after he left office in early 2021.

CNN —A federal judge ordered Friday that the trial in the classified documents case that special counsel Jack Smith brought against former President Donald Trump begin in May 2024. A Trump adviser told CNN that, given the trial date is currently set for the middle of primary season, they anticipate they’ll be able to delay the trial beyond the 2024 presidential election. “Today’s order by Judge Cannon is a major setback to the DOJ’s crusade to deny President Trump a fair legal process. The extensive schedule allows President Trump and his legal team to continue fighting this empty hoax,” Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung told CNN on Friday. CORRECTION: This story has been corrected to reflect that Cannon set the trial date to begin in a two-week period starting on May 20.

Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday lost a bid to transfer to federal court his New York state court case related to a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels. Federal Judge Alvin Hellerstein's decision denying that effort keeps Trump on track to go to trial March 25, 2024, in Manhattan Supreme Court in the case. "They're throwing everything they can at President Trump to prevent his re-election, because deep down, they know he's going to win. This case belongs in a federal court and we will continue to pursue all legal avenues to move it there." Trump, who is seeking the 2024 Republican nomination, is the first president, former or otherwise, to be charged in a criminal case.

Former President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign said Wednesday that it has raised $6.6 million since news of his federal indictment broke, including more than $4.5 million online. In an announcement, the campaign said an additional $2.1 million came in at a pre-planned fundraiser Tuesday night at Trump's Bedminster golf course in New Jersey. Altogether, that's a bit more than half of the $12 million Trump's campaign previously announced raising in the six days following the news in late March that he had been indicted in New York City. That indictment alleged that Trump violated New York state law when paying an adult film actress to stay quiet about an alleged affair. Trump's campaign has sent out numerous fundraising emails asking for donations since he revealed that he had been indicted again.
