Artificial intelligence remains in the spotlight, testing U.S. stocks after the S&P 500 posted its best three-week stretch since 2020. Earnings are due later today from Nvidia, the chip maker that has been riding the AI wave . Investors are also watching the drama unfolding at OpenAI , where hundreds of staff are threatening to quit—and contemplating the implications for Microsoft and others. The AI boom that powered the stock market higher for much of the year stalled this summer as Treasury yields surged. The S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and the Dow industrials started Tuesday in the red.

Lowe's — The home-improvement retailer dropped 3.9% after cutting its sales outlook for the full year. Lowe's also missed analyst expectations for revenue in the third quarter, as sales slid 13% year over year. Best Buy — Shares of the consumer electronics retailer fell 5.9% after the company cut its full year sales outlook in an effort to prepare for price-conscious holiday shoppers. Best Buy beat Wall Street's quarterly earnings expectations, but fell short on revenue. Kohl's lowered the low end of its full year same-store sales outlook.

Literal gated communities and figurative glass ceilings exist to highlight this divisiveness in bluntly metaphorical fashion. WilliamsBurlington, N.J.To the Editor:While I commend David Brooks’s stand on inclusion, it’s a bit late. The uproar should have started on the day that universities started to cancel speeches by speakers who leaned to the right so as not to offend some vocal student groups. Rather than allow an intelligent back and forth with those they might disagree with, these people were not allowed to come to their campus. They also celebrate the virtue of humility, a virtue that is notably absent in the world of higher education.

CNBC's Jim Cramer guided investors through next week's Wall Street action, pinpointing earnings reports from numerous retailers, as well as semiconductor giant Nvidia . "Next week is historically a pretty positive time, but I'm cognizant that we've had a big run here," Cramer said. He said he's optimistic next week will be strong, albeit short, "if we get a continuation of the rotation into beaten down retailers, along with a huge guide-up by Nvidia." Cramer said Tuesday brings a "deluge" of earnings from retail companies: Best Buy , Burlington , Dick's Sporting Goods , Kohl's , Nordstrom and Lowe's . Nvidia will also report on Tuesday, and Cramer reiterated that investors should own the stock because it is the "king" of AI semiconductors.

Over 100,000 Americans now die from drug overdoses annually. Upon taking office, Mayor Eric Adams, Mr. de Blasio’s successor, has continued to support the sites’ work. Some neighbors, politicians and media have claimed that the centers — one in East Harlem and one in Washington Heights — are increasing crime and public drug use in neighborhoods already burdened with poverty. But an important new study published this week refutes these claims. It shows that violent and property crime rates near the two overdose prevention centers (sometimes referred to as safe injection or safe consumption sites) did not increase any more than crime in similar neighborhoods elsewhere in the city.

When TJX Companies (TJX) reports quarterly results this week, we expect the off-price retailer to demonstrate continued momentum on both its top and bottom lines, helped by consumers looking for solid deals in an uncertain economic environment. And we're confident management can deliver a further expansion of gross margins as wary American consumers look for value at TJX's popular off-price chains. "Traffic remains the primary driver for comp in off-price," Barclays said in a recent research note previewing earnings for TJX and peers Ross Stores (ROSS) and Burlington Stores (BURL). Higher profits In addition to delivering higher sales, TJX continues to show improved profitability — a trend we expect to accelerate when the company reports on Wednesday. At the same time, according to Telsey, TJX faces headwinds from incremental store wage and payroll costs.

REUTERS/Elijah Nouvelage Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Nov 13 (Reuters) - Major U.S. airlines and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) said Monday they expect record air travel over the Thanksgiving holiday air travel period. Airlines for America says Nov. 26 will be a record-setting air travel day with 3.2 million passengers. The record travel comes despite airline flight cuts to New York airports because of air traffic controller staffing. A government watchdog said in June critical ATC facilities face significant staffing challenges, posing risks to air traffic operations. In the summer of 2022, there were 41,498 flights from New York airports in which ATC staffing was a contributing factor in delays.

The case of IrvineWhen the city of Irvine took on short-term rentals in 2018, Airbnb seemed unstoppable. Its tentacles had spread to cities across the globe, converting entire neighborhood blocks, in the most dramatic cases, to short-term rentals. Plenty of cities had passed ordinances banning short-term rentals, only to see Airbnb listings continue to pop up. That's consistent with data on short-term rentals in Irvine, which showed that by January 2021, the number of listings in Irvine had halved. As the Berlin and Boston studies found, when houses or apartments are pulled off the long-term market to be used as short-term rentals, housing supply decreases.

In South Burlington, the school district leases the electric buses from Highland, which also supplies equipment to recharge them and pays the electricity bills. Those bills are lower than normal because of a deal that lets Green Mountain Power, the utility serving most of Vermont, draw power from the bus batteries when demand surges. They are part of a network that also includes batteries that homeowners install to provide backup power during blackouts. In total, Green Mountain Power has access to 50 megawatts of battery storage from school buses, home batteries and other sources, said Mari McClure, the utility’s chief executive. Over time, Ms. McClure said, enough electric school buses and home batteries may be connected to the grid to stop her utility from needing to buy electricity from out-of-state power plants.

Law enforcement officials came across a staggering find after being tipped off about possible drug-dealing: dozens of dog-food-size bags of psychedelic mushrooms worth an estimated $8.5 million at a home in rural Connecticut. About 20 other states have active legislation on changing laws on psychedelic drugs, according to Psychedelic Alpha, a group that tracks such legislation. Contact information for him could not be found in public records, and court records did not list a lawyer for him. Two years later, Colorado voters passed a ballot measure to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms and to create state-regulated centers where participants can experience the drug under supervision. Gavin Newsom vetoed a bill that would have decriminalized the possession and personal use of several hallucinogens, including psychedelic mushrooms, saying the state first needed regulated guidelines.

Chris Caputo stood on the tarmac at Burlington International Airport in Vermont in early October and looked to the clouds in the distance. He had piloted military and commercial aircraft over a long career, racking up thousands of flight hours, but the trip he was about to take would be very different. Over the next 16 days, he and his colleagues flew the plane, an CX300 built by their employer, Beta Technologies, down the East Coast. They would make nearly two dozen stops to rest and recharge, flying through congested airspace in Boston, New York, Washington and other cities. When the journey came to an end in Florida, Beta handed the plane over to the Air Force, which will experiment with it over the next few months.

In Iowa, where evangelical Christians dominate the first-in-the-nation Republican presidential caucuses, Rowland and other pastors are delivering a message meant to resonate both biblically and politically. While curbing abortion has for decades energized Christian conservatives like no other issue, the attack by Hamas and Israel's response have put new pressure on Republican candidates to hew not just to traditional Republican support for Israel but to beliefs rooted in the Bible. Some Christians support Israel due to Old Testament writings that Jews are God’s chosen people and that Israel is their rightful homeland. Some evangelicals believe Israel is key to an end-times prophecy that will bring about the return of the Christian messiah. Daniel Hummel, author of “Covenant Brothers: Evangelicals, Jews, and U.S.-Israeli Relations," said that Republican support for Israel has become a proxy for other conservative priorities, particularly on immigration.

The consumer is expected to remain resilient this year, but some retailers will benefit more than others. Consumer spending drives the U.S. economy, accounting for 68% of gross domestic product — and several analysts on Wall Street forecasted that spending will remain strong through 2024. However, the prioritization of that spending will result in winners and losers. At the same time, they expect spending growth for essentials to slow, thereby leaving more money left over for discretionary purchases.
