A former San Antonio police officer who shot a teenager in a McDonald’s parking lot in October was indicted on assault and attempted murder charges, prosecutors said Thursday. Of the charges, the aggravated assault counts are the most serious and carry up to life in prison if convicted. Brennand allegedly shot Cantu, 17, after he ordered the teenager, who was eating a hamburger, out of a vehicle. Brennand was arrested in October on two counts of aggravated assault by public servant. Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who is representing the Cantu family, said Thursday’s indictment was a significant step toward justice.
A 10-year-old boy was suspended from his Florida elementary school and faces a charge of misdemeanor battery after he was accused of inappropriately touching a school counselor during a hug, an allegation his family denies. NBC News is also not naming the counselor because she invoked Marsy’s Law, which in Florida allows alleged crime victims to remain anonymous. They further said the school never properly investigated the incident and suspended the child for 10 school days despite his denying the claims. The 10-year-old’s teacher was in the room during the alleged incident but did not witness what happened, according to the police report and suspension letter. The incident has left the child fearful about returning to school, his grandmother said.
An Italian family is suing the elite New York boarding school where their 17-year-old son died by suicide in February, accusing the school of keeping him in “solitary confinement” while waiting for them to arrive after he was expelled for cheating on a math assignment. The statement went on to characterize the filing as containing "multiple inaccurate statements," and disputed the claim that Mandia was "placed in solitary confinement." “As EF Academy knew, [Claudio's] term was off to a difficult start and that he was under extreme stress,” the complaint states. A person reads funeral posters for Claudio Mandia in Battipaglia, Italy, on Feb. 25. The suit also accuses of EF Academy of negligence in retaining, supervising and training those staffers and others.

Evellyn Singleton, 23, began working as a nanny for an affluent, Nashville-based family last fall. She watched their son, Jacob, during their vacation in Nantucket and posted about it on TikTok. Jacob's mom told me she was initially drawn to my profile because it really focused on who I was as a person rather than just listing my nanny experience. The family was living in Nantucket, Massachusetts, for the month, but they're based in Nashville during the rest of the year. Courtesy of Evellyn SingletonFlying is definitely part of the job, as Jacob's family enjoys travel.

Narkis Golan outside the Supreme Court after the unanimous decision in her domestic violence case. But domestic violence victims, advocates and experts say that today, abusers and judges weaponize the clauses to punish women who flee domestic abusers to protect themselves and their children. Though there are no definitive statistics, research estimates that domestic violence could be a factor in up to 70% of Hague Convention child abduction cases. Both Fidler and Weiner criticized the ruling, alleging it did not take into account the realities of domestic violence. Golan also hoped, once her custody battle was over, to establish an organization to help protect kids and their mothers from domestic violence, Morin said.

Melinda French Gates wants to shake up the tech industry, starting in Silicon Valley. "To re-create Silicon Valley or to change it would be incredibly hard," French Gates said. The idea is that a broader and more equitable range of voices in a boardroom equals more ideas, which betters technology, French Gates added. French Gates committed $1 billion of her own money to Pivotal in 2019, four years after launching the firm. French Gates has been vocally persistent about the need for more female and diverse tech leaders for years.
