John Blake: The story about race I didn't know how to tell
  + stars: | 2023-05-02 | by ( John Blake | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +14 min
John Blake, seen here in a second-grade photo, grew up as the son of a White mother and Black father. What I didn’t know was that my community had died long before the Freddie Gray protests. That’s the story I wanted to tell, but I didn’t know how. I didn’t know how to tell Harlow any of that because my story doesn’t fit traditional narratives about race or identity. My white family members didn’t change because I shamed them with an impressive lecture on systemic racism.
Harry Belafonte, Folk Hero

And rather than simply translate his hot-ticket cabaret act for American living rooms, Belafonte imagined something stranger and more alluring. “The bleaker my acting prospects looked,” Belafonte wrote, in “My Song,” his memoir from 2011, “the more I threw myself into political organizing.” That organizing took familiar forms — marches, protests, rallies. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., with Coretta Scott King as the beneficiary, because Dr. King didn’t believe he could afford it. (“Martin began drafting his antiwar speech in my apartment.”) So, yes, Belafonte was near the psychic core and administrative center of the movement. But those bleak Hollywood prospects — some incalculable combination of racism and too-raw talent — kept Belafonte uniquely earthbound, doing a kind of cultural organizing.
I’m deep in an Alaskan forest halfway through an 8K race when I find myself alone. Above me, 100-foot spruces bend and bellow, set upon by wind so loud I mistake it for an airplane. I see my 7-year-old daughter’s chubby cheeks and dirty blond curls, my 5-year-old son with his thumb in his mouth. I was all swagger: Back when I lived in Jerusalem, I ran on isolated trails in the forest almost every afternoon. And being in Alaska — with its vastness, the way it dangles, lonely, at the edge of the continent — has only magnified those feelings.
Opinion: Texas judge’s stunning ruling caps extraordinary week
  + stars: | 2023-04-09 | by ( ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +17 min
We’re looking back at the strongest, smartest opinion takes of the week from CNN and other outlets. Tennessee legislators targeted three members of the state House for joining a gun control protest in the chamber, expelling two young Black men while failing to oust a 60-year-old White woman. (He gave the Biden administration a week to appeal the ruling before it goes into effect. Thus, the week that began with Trump facing a judge in Manhattan ended with a Trump-appointed judge overturning more than two decades of medical practice. “They go far too fast to be safe on the sidewalk” and aren’t right for bike lanes or roads either.
"All the solutions we need are strictly Donald J. Trump," one diehard fan told Insider. "I"m just waiting for Trump," the Waco resident, who declined to give his last name, told Insider. Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida mingles with MAGA supporters during former US President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign rally in Waco, Texas. Nguyen Adams, who said she wouldn't call herself a full-fledged Trump supporter, told Insider she was there mainly out of curiosity. The world is not safe," Edy told Insider, adding that she's worried that America is being taken over by communists and freedom-hating domestic terrorists.
I SPY A HIGHLY DEFINED WAIST ‘James Bond’ star Daniel Craig in a trio of recent hourglass looks. AT A MOVIE premiere last October, a star got the cameras flashing with a head-turning hourglass silhouette—nipped-in at the waist and gently flared below. Not Scarlett Johansson, or some Marilyn Monroe manqué, but Daniel Craig, a man who’s famously embodied James Bond. Mr. Craig, 55, smoldered in a cinched navy tux—his latest embrace of waist-nipping tailoring. Along with fellow A-listers including Idris Elba, Mr. Craig is making men want such exaggerated tailoring for one simple reason: The narrow waist accentuates his broad shoulders and chest, making him look more buff.

Nicole Bilderback was the 'friend' role staple of '90s teen dramedy. Bilderback appeared in classic '90s films and TV shows like "Clueless" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Being Asian didn't hold her back; it helped her stand out, she says. So in other words, I didn't pigeonhole myself as, 'Oh, well, I'm probably only going to read for Asian roles,'" she said. "The majority of the roles that I've portrayed have been roles that were either intended for Caucasian actresses or the ethnicity wasn't specified.
WOODEN ferries bob in the surf, their Swedish pennants snapping in the breeze. Though Stockholm’s harbor is cold, the gusts off the Baltic are briny and sweet, lacking the salt and corrosive violence of Atlantic winds. Every window on the waterfront seems lit up to welcome travelers. I’d argue that this city, known for long summer nights that draw thousands of tourists, is most satisfying come winter. I have come outside to the water in the middle of the night hoping the cold can help solve my jet lag.
One day around 2015, a dozen or so gift boxes showed up at the Brentwood, California, studio of the celebrity fitness trainer Tracy Anderson. "It was an exclusive boutique fitness studio," the former New York trainer said. A court officer removes Albert Schweitzer's handcuffs at a hearing in Hilo, Hawaii, on Jan. 24, 2023. “Nerves, anxiety, scared.”The justice system is “flawed,” he said, calling himself one of many imprisoned for crimes they didn’t commit. Some intentional and some unintentional.”Ireland’s relatives couldn’t immediately be reached for comment on the petition and Schweitzer’s release. In 2019, Schweitzer’s attorneys and Hawaii County prosecutors entered into a “conviction integrity agreement” to reinvestigate the case. Despite the lack of evidence linking them to the killing, the two Schweitzers and Pauline were indicted in 1997.

A Culture in the Cross Hairs

“My daughter is just a cute little 6-year-old white girl — we couldn’t find anybody that looked like my daughter. It begs the question: What does an American Girl look like today? Because, going by the numbers, American Girl dolls represent what America looks like at present — not a “wokeified” version, but a real one. American Girl’s ethos is to build girls of strong character and help them reach their full potential. It is a future that can’t be stopped by a ridiculous anchor decrying that he can’t find a white doll for his cute white child.
He's become a favorite of soccer players and has traveled with clients to the World Cup. Edwards is cutting hair for multiple teams, including players who are about to clash on the pitch. The team's players all became my clients. Some players think if I cut their hair before a match, they'll do wellThey're superstitious. This is the wild thing, though — I'm going to be cutting the France players and the England players before the quarterfinal match between them.
Emily Brill might be the most hated woman in the pet industry. Now, Brill — the preppy blond daughter of the media magnate Steven Brill — is reinventing herself as the founder of the dog-centric publication The Canine Review. Courtesy of Emily Brill Show less One reader even threatened to cancel their subscription because of the so-called bird-massacre photo shoot. Courtesy of Emily Brill Show less Brill says the photos reassure readers that "I'm not a stereotypical sort of Manhattan, head-up-my-ass, agenda, PETA person." It isn't a bad start, but "she's got a long way to go to make it really thrive," Steven Brill told Insider.
Vanished in the Pacific

In the early 2010s, Mr. Mellow set out for still more distant shores, traveling to many famous surf breaks in the South Pacific. Mr. Abdul-Rashed and Mr. Danian traveled to Hawaii to connect with Mr. Mellow, their spiritual guide and Pacific expedition leader. Mr. Mellow posted an ad on Facebook and Craigslist offering $10,000 for passage to the South Pacific. Mr. Schmidt was in sync with the young seekers when it came to fear of Big Brother and vaccines, but dreading port officials brandishing nasal swabs struck even Mr. Schmidt as a little unhinged. When asked if he was at all responsible for what had happened to Mr. Danian and Mr. Abdul-Rashed, Mr. Mellow looked genuinely confused.
Over the next six years, each of the other members of my family would leave. I entered the diner having functioned as an only child for nearly 50 years. As the youngest in my family of five, I looked up to my oldest brother as little sisters often do. I entered the diner having functioned as an only child for nearly 50 years. This was no Hollywood family reunion, but I sensed that his validation of my perspective would lessen my internal demons.
Like a bouquet of gilded lilies, “A Joni Mitchell Songbook” offers a tribute to Ms. Mitchell as well as a bit of misdirection. The subject, now 79 years old, does not appear, which is hardly a shock, but neither is the show a songbook in the customary sense. He is on hand to conduct the National Symphony Orchestra and several guests putting their own vocal spin on the songs. It makes for one lush hour of Mitchell. Ms. Mitchell, once upon a time the ethereal blond poster-girl of folkies, was never easy to mimic, thanks largely to her open guitar tunings and singular soprano; and once she became a Charles Mingus acolyte she morphed into a sui generis jazzman.
Like Chuck Berry's guitar, Lewis' piano was essential in shaping rock 'n' roll in the mid-1950s. "Jerry Lee thinks that Jerry Lee is too wicked to be saved." His young son Steve Allen Lewis drowned in 1962 and another son, Jerry Lee Jr., died in a 1973 car accident at 19. In his later years he settled down but biographer Rick Bragg recalled interviewing Lewis for his 2014 book "Jerry Lee Lewis: His Own Words." "I don't think Jerry Lee Lewis had to exaggerate his life one bit to make it interesting," Bragg told the Atlanta Constitution Journal.
Suddenly, in the midst of discussing what Cohen should wear to the next LoveShackFancy store opening, there was the sound of glass clanging. (Another person confirmed hearing this exchange, though the person close to the company said multiple Zoom attendees did not recall it.) The person close to the company said, "It is not uncommon for trips to have dual purposes — they always generate content." Another time, during a visit to the Palm Beach store, Cohen freaked out after seeing staffers in sweatshirts and sneakers. "As with most contemporary fashion brands, we currently do not operate in the plus-size business," the person close to LoveShackFancy said.
LONDON — Liz Truss lost to a head of lettuce. The leafy vegetable's decay was more gradual than Truss' crumbling tenure as British prime minister, which ended with her resignation Thursday. Her decision provided an unlikely victory for the lettuce, which had been pitted against her by a tabloid newspaper last Friday. Amer Ghazzal / Shutterstock“The lettuce outlasted Liz Truss,” the caption declared as a remix of “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang kicked in, lights flashed in the background and bottles of alcohol were added to the scene. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev tweeted “congrats to lettuce” shortly after Truss’ speech.
LONDON — British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced Thursday that she would resign after just six weeks in office, following a disastrous and rapidly reversed economic plan that sent the pound plunging and her government into chaos. Britain's Prime Minister Liz Truss delivers a speech outside No. She ended the brief statement by saying: "I will remain as prime minister until a successor is chosen." Liz Truss is now the shortest-serving prime minister in British history. Her personal approval rating fell to minus 70, according to pollsters at YouGov, making her the most unpopular party leader in British history.
President Joe Biden even joined the criticism with a rare comment on an ally’s economic policies in which he called the tax cut plan a “mistake.”Truss admitted fault Monday night. “I do want to accept responsibility and say sorry for the mistakes that have been made,” she told BBC News. “Anyone could have seen that this wasn’t going to fly — how could they have not seen that coming?” Ford said. As critics had predicted, markets tanked and the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar in 30 years. “It wasn’t just a total disaster with the markets, it was a total disaster electorally,” Ford said of Truss’ economic plan.
On Monday, the first teaser for upcoming sequel, “A Christmas Story Christmas,” was released, and it promises to be a nostalgic trip down memory lane. The new film follows a now-grown Ralphie Parker, the blond protagonist again played by actor Peter Billingsley. The teaser ends with a closeup of the adult Ralphie, still blue-eyed and bespectacled, as he smiles for the camera. “A Christmas Story Christmas” premieres on HBO Max on November 17. (CNN and HBO Max are both part of the same parent company, Warner Bros.
