[1/6] People load up their newly purchased items from Best Buy on Black Friday in Wheaton-Glenmont, Maryland, U.S., November 24, 2023. A record 130.7 million people are expected to shop in stores and online in the U.S. on Black Friday this year, the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates. But at 6 a.m. on Friday at a Walmart in New Milford, Connecticut, the parking lot was only half full. "It's a lot quieter this year, a lot quieter," said shopper Theresa Forsberg, who visits the same five stores with her family at dawn every Black Friday. And the rise of online shopping has reduced the importance of Black Friday as a single-day event.

Brokerage TD Cowen lowered its U.S. holiday spending estimate to 2% to 3% growth, from 4% to 5%, as it forecast flat Black Friday traffic. With many consumers squeezed by persistent inflation and high interest rates, U.S. holiday spending is expected to rise at the slowest pace in five years. Who Are You Calling ‘Delulu’?
  + stars: | 2023-11-23 | by ( Yaa Addae | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Call it magical thinking or manifesting, but the belief that people can influence their reality through sheer will has existed for centuries. Now, there’s a new term for this idea: “delulu.”Derived from the word delusional, delulu first gained popularity this summer as shorthand for unrelenting confidence. (Posts with the word have more than five billion views on TikTok.) Though it has roots in the K-pop community to describe a fan’s parasocial relationship with a celebrity, delulu is now widely used by Gen Z-ers and young millennials to describe the process of making the seemingly impossible possible — or at least of coming to believe that they can. In the words of Bianca Bernardo, a 23-year-old content creator in Los Angeles: “May all your delulu come trululu, because being delulu is the solulu.”

But the rest, from idea generation to testing and the models used to make trades, will all be developed through AI and machine learning. Sekhon came to Bridgewater in 2018 after a life in academia, where he taught machine learning at Harvard, UC Berkeley, Yale. Sekhon applies machine learning to analyze Bridgewater's reams of data from the past to predict what will happen in the future. At AIA Labs, much of the work is focused on combining statistical models with language models. And now, AI language models have progressed to the point where humans can interrogate and probe them, much in the same way people talk to each other through language, Sekhon said.

On Tuesday, the bank launched a customizable dashboard designed to help Goldman's institutional investor clients understand the state of financial markets. Currently, that's somewhat of a messy and manual process spread across several platforms, Chris Churchman, Goldman Sachs partner and head of Marquee, told Insider. Banks like Goldman Sachs benefit from more complex trades, like a complicated derivative with legs and hedges, that require more work. Goldman Sachs Marquee MarketView is accessible on desktop and mobile. "What clients have said to me is, you basically created Pinterest for capital markets, or you're creating a social network for capital markets," Churchman said.

The goal is to concentrate Man's AI and machine learning firepower to reduce duplicative efforts across disparate trading desks and teams. The company's software engineers are using generative AI to generate code, which could help Man's some-500 technologists be more efficient. In that way, uniting Man's data and machine learning efforts to explore generative AI use cases was a natural step, Mace said. Generative AI creates new human-like content like images, text, or even snippets of code based on prompts. Generative AI is "very different to how we use the other AI techniques, which is really exciting.

Nov 7 (Reuters) - Agricultural and construction machinery maker CNH Industrial on Tuesday lowered its 2023 revenue forecast, citing a softening for its farm machinery, predominantly in South America, sending its shares plummeting. A Milan-based trader told Reuters European funds were also selling the stock ahead of CNH's delisting from the Milan bourse. The Italian-American company lowered its net revenue forecast from industrial activities, which accounts for the majority of CNH's revenue, of between 3-6% this year, down from a previous forecast of 8-11%. CNH, which houses brands such as Case IH and New Holland, reported third-quarter net sales from industrial activities down 1% year on year at $5.33 billion. CNH, which also announced a new share buyback programme as part of plans to achieve single listing on the New York Stock Exchange, reported quarterly adjusted operating profit from industrial activities of $657 million, down from $670 million a year earlier.

The solitude of remote work seemed to particularly hit Gen Z workers — who began their careers as workplaces went from in-person to virtual — hard. With companies asking — and in some cases mandating — their employees return to the office, Gen Z workers who are going in regularly have said they have a renewed sense of confidence in their jobs. LONDON (AP) — Two of London's Metropolitan Police officers were dismissed from the force on Wednesday after a disciplinary panel concluded that they committed gross misconduct over the stop and search of two Black athletes. Bianca Williams and Ricardo Dos Santos, both professional sprinters, complained to the police watchdog that they were racially profiled by a group of police officers on July 4, 2020. The couple were driving home in London with their 3-month-old infant son in the back seat when police followed their car and pulled them over outside their home. The disciplinary panel heard the officers said they followed the athletes’ vehicle because of Dos Santos’ “appalling” and “suspicious” driving, and that they were doing their duty when they conducted the stop and search. But the panel concluded that two of the officers, Jonathan Clapham and Sam Franks, lied about smelling cannibis during the incident.

There would be a referendum within his first term to recognize Indigenous Australians in the constitution and create a permanent body – a Voice to Parliament – to allow them to speak directly to government. Yes voters are much younger, live in the inner-city and voted for the Labor Party or Greens. Paul Smith, Director Government and Social Australia, at YouGov says the young-old divide in this referendum indicates a generational difference in world view. Making mistakes doesn't feel great, but they can provide some lessons you might not have learned otherwise. We asked this year's rising stars of Wall Street to open up about the biggest missteps of their careers so far and what they took away from them. Some shared their rookie errors — like slamming their laptop shut after forgetting to save their first big pitch deck or duplicating a trade — while others gave more reflective answers about how early career mistakes impacted their paths. We've got to iterate and change how we do things, and I think that's helped our team's process a lot. So my mistakes also brought me here, and everything that has been a mistake is always a learning experience.
