TikTok said Monday it had removed accounts belonging to Russian state media outlets RT and Sputnik for engaging in what TikTok called “covert influence operations.”The social video app said in a statement on its website that it removed accounts associated with TV-Novosti and Rossiya Segodnya, the parent organizations of the RT television network and the Russian news agency Sputnik. The suspensions follow the Biden administration’s accusations this month that RT acts as an arm of Moscow’s spy agencies. Social media rivals Meta and YouTube have announced similar suspensions of Russian state media accounts, although other tech companies such as X have left up RT and Sputnik accounts. RT and Sputnik both published reports over the weekend saying that some of their accounts had been deleted without explanation. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this month that he believed Russian outlets such as RT had moved beyond working as media outlets and had turned into covert intelligence operations.

The Summary California’s attorney general is suing ExxonMobil, alleging the company misled consumers into believing that recycling was a viable solution for plastic waste. California’s attorney general sued ExxonMobil on Monday, alleging that the company had waged a “campaign of deception” for decades to mislead consumers and convince them that recycling was a viable solution for plastic waste. I hope this is going to open the floodgates," said Judith Enck, president of Beyond Plastics, a nationwide project seeking to end plastic pollution. In 1973, industry leaders called those concerned about plastic waste “enemies,” according to internal communications from the Society of the Plastics Industry (now known as the Plastics Industry Association), which are cited in the lawsuit. In the U.S., the plastic recycling rate has never exceeded 9%, the lawsuit says.

The Summary A new study found that some members of an octopus species hunt cooperatively in groups with fish. A new study shows that some members of the species Octopus cyanea maraud around the seafloor in hunting groups with fish, which sometimes include several fish species at once. It’s an indication that at least one octopus species has characteristics and markers of intelligence that scientists once considered common only in vertebrates. These hunting groups typically included several species of reef fish, such as grouper and goatfish. These are the ambush predators, the ones that don’t move, don’t look for prey,” Sampaio said.

Yet Johnson, and any other Republican who votes for this bill, will be quietly defying Trump's wishes just weeks before the 2024 election. In essence, Trump asked Republicans to threaten a government shutdown over the provision. Yet when the continuing resolution with the SAVE Act came up for a vote last week, it failed, with 14 Republicans voting against it. Many Republicans simply don't want to have this fight right nowDespite Trump's push, Republicans on Capitol Hill understand that actually following his lead would be reckless. It's certainly possible that most Republicans will vote against Johnson's new government funding bill.

That standard guidance will be circulated Monday, seven days before a shutdown could occur. Should lawmakers fail to pass a funding bill, millions of federal workers and military personnel would be affected by a shutdown. Another 1.4 million federal employees may have to work without pay, though some of these positions are funded through resources other than annual appropriations, she said. All federal employees are guaranteed back pay, though contractors are not. Even the threat of a shutdown can disrupt the lives of federal employees, who could have to forgo their paychecks.

CNN —California Attorney General Rob Bonta filed a lawsuit against ExxonMobil on Monday for what the state calls a “decades-long campaign of deception” in which the oil and gas giant allegedly misled the public on the merits of plastic recycling. Bonta is also asking the court to rule ExxonMobil must pay civil penalties, among other payments, for the harm inflicted by plastic pollution in California. “For decades, ExxonMobil has been deceiving the public to convince us that plastic recycling could solve the plastic waste and pollution crisis when they clearly knew this wasn’t possible. Recent reports have shown only around 9% of the world’s plastic is recycled, a figure that’s even lower in the US, around 5 to 6%. Newly released federal data shows the US tech workforce is younger than the workforce at large and getting younger still. Tech workers under 25 are becoming more common, while the proportion of workers older than 40 shrinks. There's an age-old perception that tech workers should be young so they can move fast and break things. One of the top qualifications to land a tech job, it seems, is to possess a birth certificate dated after 1990. Women make up just 22% of tech workers — the same proportion of jobs they held in 2005.
