CNN —More than 1,200 days after their historic 2020 general election clash, Joe Biden and Donald Trump are expected to clinch their respective parties’ 2024 nominations Tuesday, with voting taking place in four additional states. Biden is the projected winner of the Democratic primary in the US territory of the Northern Mariana Islands, held earlier Tuesday. Mike DeWine of Ohio parted ways with Donald Trump on Monday and endorsed state Sen. Matt Dolan over Trump-backed businessman Bernie Moreno in the state's three-way GOP primary for a U.S. Senate seat. In breaking ranks with the former president, DeWine called Dolan the party's best shot at defeating Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in November. The time for that excuse is going to fast run out now that the shape of the 2024 general election is clear. “Until now, people didn’t think it was going to be Biden versus Trump, but here we are and we’re ready to go,” he said. To start with, who are the Republican voters that Trump will have the most trouble getting to the polls in November? In South Carolina, it was 36% of voters in the Republican primary (and Trump won 18% of them). In New Hampshire, it was 46% (and Trump won 22% of them). Biden won four of 2020’s battleground states by 2% or less, and Trump won North Carolina, the closest battleground state in which he prevailed, by just a little over a point. Her effort isn’t harmless, however: It does force the Trump campaign to spend money that could otherwise be put toward taking on Biden.

Many older Americans are financially vulnerable, with over half living on incomes of $30,000 or less a year. And, as Sanders' report notes, about 10% of older Americans live in poverty, according to an analysis from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Without Social Security income, around 38% of Americans 65 and older would be living below the poverty line. Even so, America's Social Security benefits lag behind many other wealthy countries; benefits amount to, on average, 51.8% of workers' earnings across the OECD. All of that comes as older Americans see their adult children leaning on them financially, as Gen Zers and millennials weather their own economic storms.

CNN —The South Carolina Republican presidential primary is usually the most important contest of the nominating season. Since 1980, the only Republican to win the nomination without winning South Carolina was Mitt Romney in 2012. While Haley is unlikely to take South Carolina, she is definitely outperforming her national baseline. Both counties have relatively high levels of college graduates, who have been most hostile to the former president in GOP primaries historically. Trump winning college graduates in the South Carolina primary would match what we’re seeing in national polling of the Republican electorate.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — The state of Maine's long-cherished reputation for political independence is being threatened by the nation's polarized politics, with more and more of its voters feeling pressured to take sides. So-called independents, or unenrolled voters, have gone from the state's largest voting bloc to trailing both major parties in just four years. Republicans, too, overtook unenrolled voters two years later. As of last month, a tally of active voters indicated there were 343,488 Democratic voters, 279,936 Republican voters and 273,298 unenrolled voters. The economist served in the Maine Senate as an independent, and remains active on political issues.
