The world’s most endangered marine mammal, a small porpoise called the vaquita, is hanging onto existence and appears to be benefiting from new conservation measures, according to the results of a new scientific survey of the species that was made public on Wednesday. An international team of scientists estimated that at least 10 vaquitas remain in the Gulf of California, the waters that separate Baja California from the Mexican mainland. The porpoises are found nowhere else and have been driven to the brink of extinction by drowning in gill nets, a type of fishing gear that drifts like a huge mesh curtain, catching fish by their gills. Dolphins, sea turtles and vaquitas get stuck, too, dying when they can’t surface to breathe. “Today, we have good news, hopeful news,” María Luisa Albores González, Mexico’s secretary of environment and natural resources, said at a news conference announcing the survey results.

BENGALURU, April 24 (Reuters) - Indian shares were set to open higher on Monday as improved quarterly results from heavyweights Reliance Industries Ltd (RELI.NS) and ICICI Bank Ltd(ICBK.NS) eased some concerns over a lacklustre start to the earnings season. India's most valuable company, Reliance Industries reported 19% growth in fourth-quarter profit, aided by the strong performance in oil-to-chemicals (O2C) segment, post market hours on Friday. Private lender ICICI Bank posted a 30% jump in net profit in the March quarter, helped by improved net interest income and loan growth. The strong earnings of the two companies, which account for nearly 20% of the total weightage in Nifty 50, could improve the sentiment soured by the weak earnings and outlook of top information technology companies, analysts added. Stocks to Watch:** Yes Bank Ltd (YESB.NS): Lender's net profit slumps 45% in the March quarter on higher provisions.

Entrepreneur Luke Iseman said the sulfur dioxide in the balloons would deflect sunlight and cool the atmosphere, a controversial climate strategy known as solar geoengineering. The Mexican government told Reuters it is now actively drafting “new regulations and standards” to prohibit solar geoengineering inside the country. While the Mexican government announced its intention to ban solar geoengineering in January, its current actions and plans to discuss geoengineering bans with other countries have not been previously reported. GLOBAL GEOENGINEERING BANClimate policy experts said Mexico is in a position to help set the rules for future geoengineering research. David Keith, a professor of applied physics and public policy at Harvard University who has dedicated much of his research to solar geoengineering, called Iseman's launch a "stunt."

Bajaj Auto did not respond immediately to Reuters' request for comment on the Economic Times (ET) report, which said that the cut would reflect pressure in Nigeria, its largest export market. Bajaj Auto is likely to produce 250,000-270,000 units in March, ET reported, citing multiple people aware of the production plans. That's lower than its average monthly production of 338,000 units in the first nine months of FY 2023, the report added. The report did not specify how many units each of the two- and three-wheelers Bajaj Auto was likely to produce. They had risen 11.3% in 2022, against a 15.31% rise in the Nifty auto index (.NIFTYAUTO).
MEXICO CITY, Feb 24 (Reuters) - Tesla Inc. would be denied permits to build a plant in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, where it has eyed investing, if water is scarce, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Friday. Lopez Obrador called out arid Nuevo Leon for its water scarcity earlier this week, instead touting the benefits of Mexico's poorer southern region where he has sought to increase development. In 2020, he said he would withhold permits for a Constellation Brands (STZ.N) brewery in the northern state of Baja California after criticizing the project for consuming too much water in a dry zone. On Friday, the leftist leader praised Constellation for choosing to relocate to a state in southeastern Mexico. "They understood very well," Lopez Obrador said.

The family of a California public defender who died while celebrating his first wedding anniversary in Mexico believes he was the victim of a "brutal crime," their lawyer said Tuesday. The liaison, who is not identified in the statement, told the family that Blair died of severe head trauma and that his case had been forwarded to prosecutors for a possible homicide investigation, the statement said. Blair's family plans to carry out its own independent investigation, hiring a private investigator and a forensic pathologist, Scarsone said. While Budapest and Warsaw are haggling with the bloc over rule-of-law strings attached to billions worth of pandemic recovery funds, Romania has already drawn down over 6 billion euros in grants and cheap loans. Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca has said the government aims to tap more than 10 billion euros a year, equivalent to about 4% of GDP, of about 90 billion euros of EU funding available to Bucharest through to 2027. RESHORINGCompanies reshoring from Russia and Ukraine to nearby low-cost manufacturing hubs partially helped push foreign direct investment to 9.39 billion euros in January-October, the largest 10-month figure since Romania joined the EU. "We are optimistic that investment will rise in coming years, also encouraged by EU funds," said Alex Milcev, head of Tax and Legal at E&Y Romania. And relations with the EU are not always smooth: in December, Austrian opposition over unauthorised immigration kept Romania out of Europe's borderless Schengen area.
When Luke Iseman was thinking of launching a solar geoengineering startup, he talked to experts in the field. I want no geoengineering to occur," Iseman told CNBC. And that's a that's a pretty terrifying world to imagine," Iseman told CNBC. "Initially, I was really skeptical entirely of the of the voluntary carbon credit market," Iseman told CNBC. BENGALURU, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Indian shares swung between small gains and losses on Wednesday in the absence of major triggers, with liquidity drying up ahead of the year-end and weaker global cues. Foreign institutional investors had sold net 43.2 billion rupees since Dec. 16, as per National Stock Exchange data. Adding to the worries for domestic equities were oil prices, which hovered around a three-week high on hopes of demand recovery in China. Higher oil prices hurt oil-importing countries like India, where crude constitutes the bulk of the country's import bill. Twenty-six of the Nifty 50 stocks logged losses, with Bharti Airtel (BRTI.NS), Bajaj Finserv (BJFS.NS), ONGC (ONGC.NS), Infosys (INFY.NS) and Bajaj Auto (BAJA.NS) losing over 0.6%.

They act as carbon vaults by sinking to the bottom of the ocean when they die, scientists said. Though it may not be a solution to the climate crisis on its own, their ability to store carbon is another reason to encourage their numbers to rise in the oceans, the scientists said. Whales naturally store carbon by living their lifeWhales capture carbon mainly by pooping and dying. "You can think of whales as like big floating trees in the ocean," Pearson said. The whales can then feed on these new lifeforms, in huge quantities, locking that carbon in their body for many decades.
The final leg of NASA’s inaugural Artemis mission is expected to unfold Sunday as the spacecraft the agency sent to orbit the moon tries to return to Earth. The crew module on the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Orion spacecraft is slated to land under parachutes in the Pacific Ocean around 12:40 p.m. ET Sunday, off the coast of Mexico’s Baja California, according to NASA’s re-entry plan.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Orion spacecraft returned to Earth after a nearly monthlong voyage that took it to orbit the moon, concluding a test flight that the agency deemed a success and helping to reinvigorate its ambitions for deep-space exploration. After facing intense heat when it hurtled through the atmosphere, the Orion crew module—a gumdrop-shaped vehicle that astronauts are expected to travel in during future missions—landed in the Pacific Ocean under parachutes at 12:40 p.m. ET on Sunday, the agency said. The splashdown was west of Baja California in Mexico.
NASA’s Orion spacecraft hurtled through the atmosphere and landed in the Pacific Ocean on Sunday, concluding a nearly monthlong test mission that sent it around the moon. The Orion crew module—a gumdrop-shaped vehicle that astronauts are expected to travel in during future Artemis missions—faced a significant test before splashing down under parachutes west of Baja California in Mexico. Its heat shield was expected to encounter temperatures of up to 5,000 degrees as it re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere from its journey orbiting the moon.
