NEW YORK, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Shares of Bed, Bath & Beyond Inc (BBBY.O) rebounded sharply in high volume trading on Monday amid speculation by retail investors that the struggling home goods seller might be a potential acquisition target. As of mid-day, traders had exchanged $114 million worth of the Bed, Bath & Beyond's shares, nearly matching the company's entire stock market value of $157 million, according to Refinitiv data. Bed Bath & Beyond has struggled for years with shrinking sales as it competes against Amazon (AMZN.O) and other rivals, with investors pointing to problems including cluttered stores and an over-reliance on discount coupons. In a filing last week, Bed Bath & Beyond said it expected to show a net loss of $385.8 million for its fiscal quarter ending in November, including $100 million of impairment charges. Of the 13 analysts covering the company, three recommend "hold," eight rate the stock "sell," and two have "strong sell" recommendations.

On Thursday, Bed Bath warned it may have to file for bankruptcy, saying it could soon be unable to cover costs as sales lag and store traffic dwindles. If Bed Bath has made significant inroads in improving inventory, it could offer a glimmer of hope for the quarters ahead. Before Bed Bath can address moving product off shelves, though, it needs to tackle an even more fundamental problem: having enough merchandise to fill them.

But for investors, consumers and the Federal Reserve, inflation remains a major economic concern, just as it was in 2022. Don't be surprised if beaten-down retail stock Bed Bath & Beyond falls even more from here, according to KeyBanc Capital Markets. "Over the past few months, management has stemmed the bleeding, improved liquidity, and improved relations with these two stakeholders," wrote analyst Christopher Horvers. Bed Bath & Beyond shares have experienced a roller-coaster ride in recent years, as smaller traders on Reddit piled into the heavily shorted retailer.

The ADP National Employment report showed a much greater-than-expected rise in private employment in December, while another report showed weekly jobless claims fell last week. The reports came a day after data showed a moderate fall in U.S. job openings, in growing evidence that the labor market remains tight. A strong labor market has been a concern for markets pummeled by rising borrowing costs as it gives the Federal Reserve a reason to raise rates for longer than expected this year. The more comprehensive nonfarm payrolls report is due on Friday, which would provide further clues on labor demand and the rate hike trajectory.

Meme stock mania may finally be over

Meme stocks, that is. Shares of movie theater chain AMC (AMC) have plummeted 55% this year. But investors may also be realizing that companies like GameStop, AMC and Bed Bath & Beyond face legitimate challenges. But mostly, investors are aware of the fact that in uncertain times like this, it may make more sense to play it safe instead of taking a huge gamble on a meme stock. Add all that up and it’s a miserable time for investors to be considering speculative meme stocks.

This is a problem for self-checkout: customers aren’t used to removing security tags themselves, and most self-checkout machines aren’t equipped to do so. To get around this, some apparel stores are using wireless “radio frequency identification” security tags, known as RFID, on merchandise instead of hard tags. Stores such as Uniqlo have invested in new self-checkout machines that automatically recognize these tags, eliminating the need for customers to scan any products themselves or remove security tags.

Nov 2 (Reuters) - Bed Bath & Beyond Inc (BBBY.O) said on Wednesday its customer and technology chief, Rafeh Masood, will step down, days after the home goods retailer reported a possible data breach. Last week, Bed Bath said a third party had improperly accessed its data through a phishing scam by gaining access to the hard drive and certain shared drives of one of its employees. Masood's resignation, effective Dec. 2, was not the result of any disagreement with Bed Bath & Beyond on any matter related to the company's operations, practices or financial statements, the company said in a regulatory filing. Once considered a so-called "category killer" in home and bath goods, the big box retailer's fortunes have dragged after attempts to sell more store-branded products flopped and led to the reshuffle of its management team. Earlier in October, Bed Bath & Beyond appointed Sue Gove as its Chief Executive Officer.
