On stock markets, the European retail sector (.SXRP) has lost 40% of its value so far this year, more than twice the hit on the broader regional share index (.STOXX). Yet, JPMorgan and other strategists say the worst is yet to come for consumers and retailers alike. European retailersSURGING COSTSHigher energy bills and wages and elevated freight and fabric prices have pushed up costs for euro zone companies by more than 40% this year, according to Eurostat data. Their joint communique released by the U.S. Treasury late on Wednesday did give Japan something - but it was thin gruel. read more"Recognizing that many currencies have moved significantly this year with increased volatility, we reaffirm our exchange rate commitments as elaborated in May 2017," the G7 wrote. And, for the record, the 2017 phraseology was that excess volatility and disorderly currency moves have negative impacts on their economies and financial stability. read more"We cannot tolerate excessive volatility in the currency market driven by speculative moves," he opined after. The big question is whether this dollar surge is in fact a "short run" aberration or whether it is a more permanent feature of the global landscape.
Explainer: How are life insurers coping in LDI storm?
  + stars: | 2022-10-13 | by ( Carolyn Cohn | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
LONDON, Oct 13 (Reuters) - The focus of a gilt market storm has been around pension schemes' use of liability-driven investments (LDI), many of which are highly leveraged. Life insurers also use LDI strategies in their provision of annuities, which pay a fixed income for life. HOW HAVE LIFE INSURERS PERFORMED? Life insurers were more likely to have hedged their positions with physical financial instruments, rather than with derivatives, analysts say. WHAT DOES THE FUTURE HOLD FOR LIFE INSURERS?
Meanwhile, shares of pension providers such as Legal & General (LGEN.L), Prudential (PRU.L) and Aviva (AV.L) fell between 2.3% and 3.3%. UK's banking index (.FTNMX301010) was down 1.6% at a one-week low despite prospects of a large rate hike by the BoE next month. However, the internationally focussed FTSE 100 has outperformed UK's domestically exposed FTSE 250 (.FTMC) this year, as a weakening pound and strength in commodity prices boosted the former. The FTSE 100 has shed 6.8% so in 2022, while the midcap index has lost about 28% - set for its worst annual performance since 2008. Ukraine-focused miner Ferrexpo Plc (FXPO.L) fell 9.1%, as it temporarily suspended production after Russian missile attacks damaged state-owned electrical infrastructure.
