Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg presents Orion AR Glasses, as he makes a keynote speech during the Meta Connect annual event, at the company's headquarters in Menlo Park, California, U.S. September 25, 2024. The most impressive aspect of Meta's Orion augmented-reality glasses has more to do with size and comfort than flashy computer graphics. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the Orion glasses on Wednesday and pitched them as "a glimpse of a future that I think is going to be pretty exciting." While Orion is not capable of putting users in fully virtual worlds, the glasses can overlay digital graphics onto the real world. And unlike VR headsets that can be cumbersome to wear for extended periods, Boorstin said she found the Orion glasses to be a good fit.

Here's where to invest $1 million, according to the pros

If you had as much as a spare $1 million to invest right now, what should you buy? Balanced-to-medium risk profile With as much as $1 million to invest with, investors can buy individual securities instead of being restricted to funds, said David Dietze, managing principal and senior portfolio strategist at Peapack Private Wealth Management. "A much smaller amount leaves an investor forced to invest in funds to get adequate diversification. With one million, one could say invest $20K in fifty different stocks and be well diversified," he said. More aggressive risk profile Gambles says that taking on a more aggressive stance would mean an "all in commitment" on the themes he expects will perform, and removing any hedges against those trades.

US to return 297 antiquities to India
  + stars: | 2024-09-23 | by ( Chris Lau | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —The US is returning 297 history-spanning antiquities stolen or smuggled from India, many dating back centuries. In July, the US and India signed an agreement to protect cultural property by preventing illegal trades and streamline the process to return stolen antiquities back to India. “Prime Minister (Modi) thanked President Biden for his support in the return of these artifacts,” the India’s Ministry of External Affairs said. India has faced an uphill battle in protecting its valuable cultural treasures from looters, though it has been making headway in recent years. In 2022, the US returned 307 stolen treasures to India as part of a 15-year investigation into international trafficking networks.

CNN —The surviving co-founder of the company that owned the doomed Titan submersible is scheduled to testify Monday as a US Coast Guard panel continues to investigate what led to the implosion that killed five people last year. The Marine Board of Investigation’s two-week hearing began September 16 and is expected to resume Monday with OceanGate co-founder Guillermo Sohnlein, who in January 2013 left the company, set to testify, the Coast Guard’s hearing schedule shows. In 2009, Sohnlein and CEO Stockton Rush launched the Washington state-based company that created the experimental 23,000-pound submersible. The submersible lost contact with its support vessel, the Polar Prince, an hour and 45 minutes into its dive on June 18, 2023. Former OceanGate director of marine operations David Lochridge, center, stands during his testimony on September 17, 2024.

CNN —Four days of hearings on the 2023 implosion of the Titan submersible which killed all five people on board concluded this week with more damning testimony recounting multiple safety incidents over the years. Lahey said he saw the Titan in March 2019 while in the Bahamas and was “not impressed,” and told OceanGate staff members how he felt about it. I saw evidence where they were crimping cables to hold on weights, it just looked amateurish in its execution,” he said. “Anyone that felt safe going to depths in the Titan was deluded or delusional, it was an experimental vessel, it was clear that it was dangerous,” said Hagen. David Lochridge, a former director of marine operations for OceanGate who expressed safety concerns about the ill-fated Titan submersible, said during his testimony earlier this week the Titan tragedy could have been prevented if US safety authorities had investigated his complaints.

It also means lots of talk from the experts about "normalizing the yield curve" in the bond market — meaning getting back to a setup where bonds with longer maturities yield higher rates than those with shorter-term maturities. That's referred to as "yield curve inversion," which has historically signaled an upcoming recession. Currently, however, the yield curve looks more like a check mark than a gradually rising hill. An inverted Treasury yield curve messes with that dynamic. Everyone, from private citizens to multinational corporations benefits from a normalized yield curve because normal means less uncertainty, which means more predictability.

Found Golf Balls CEO Shaun Shienfield, whose company recovers and resells millions of lost balls across the US and Canada each year, told CNN that he gauged the average to be between three and four each round. Using Shienfield’s low estimate, that’s over 1.5 billion balls lost in the US every year since 2020. “While precise global estimates are challenging … the worldwide figure could easily exceed 3 to 5 billion golf balls lost each year,” Petersen told CNN. Mitchell Schols, founder of Canada-based Biodegradable Golf Balls, put a “very conservative” estimate for North America at one million balls lost to oceans annually. One UK-based man told CNN in 2015 that he could earn up to £100,000 (about $114,000) annually by diving to retrieve golf balls from lakes on golf courses.

Many companies don't have cyber insurance because of costs, but the market is growing. Cyber insurance can help companies recover financially from cyberattacks and data breaches. But one way leaders can minimize the impact of losses from a cybersecurity incident is by getting cyber insurance. One reason is the cost: The Cyber Readiness Institute estimates that cyber insurance can cost businesses $500 to $5,000 a year. But in his own way (very demure, very mindful) that is what happened Wednesday when he announced the Fed’s first rate cut in four years, a giant half-point reduction that will lower the cost of borrowing and offer financial relief for consumers and businesses. Whenever a reporter asks him about politics, Powell refuses to bite. Like on Wednesday, when he was asked whether the half-point rate cut had political motivations, he responded with something approaching exasperation. It’s just maximum employment and price stability on behalf of all Americans.”Of course, that’s unlikely to stop either party from using the rate cut news to their advantage, given that the economy is the No. Trump can continue to claim that a rate cut is a sign the economy is weak.

Vice President Kamala Harris called the rate cut “welcome news,” while former President Donald Trump suggested, without evidence, that the decision could be politically motivated. With less than 50 days until Election Day, another question has emerged: Will the rate cut matter to voters? Harris responded to the rate cut by saying she’s focused on bringing down prices. This story has been updated with reaction to the Fed’s rate cut announcement.

This is the first time since the October 7 attacks that Blinken has visited the Middle East without visiting Israel. The top US diplomat typically uses the visits to Israel to press the Israeli government on the critical issues surrounding the war, including the hostage and ceasefire deal. However, Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has frequently rebuffed the administration in the hours and days following those meetings. The last time Blinken visited Israel, he said that Netanyahu had agreed to the “bridging proposal” meant to close to close the remaining gaps with Hamas. Blinken said earlier this month that “it’s incumbent on both parties” – Israel and Hamas – “to get to yes” on the “remaining issues” related to a ceasefire and hostage deal.

A week's worth of inflation data showed that price pressures have eased substantially since their meteoric rise in 2021-22.
