The argument, filed as a third-party brief in proceedings where Clark and Meadows seek to move the Georgia state charges to federal court, musters support for keeping the entire case in state court. A judge is set to consider arguments from Meadows and potentially Clark on Monday on moving the case, after both have asked to do so. "The conduct charged here by the Fulton County District Attorney— interference by Mark Meadows and Jeffrey Clark with the 2020 presidential election in Georgia in order to aid Donald Trump’s candidacy—bore no connection to any duty of Mr. Meadows’s, Mr. Clark’s, or Mr. Trump’s office. "Removal would be perverse, as this prosecution arises from interference with state-government operations and seeks to vindicate Georgia’s voice in a federal election, the very contest from which federal authority flows." Trump could ask for similar protection as president but has not formally asked the court to consider moving his case at this time.

Trump, 77, has denied wrongdoing and attacked the case as politically motivated. Trump's lead in opinion polls has widened since his first indictment, and his supporters say they believe the charges are politically motivated. In Georgia, Trump is accused of pressuring state officials and setting up a slate of illegitimate electors to reverse his 2020 defeat. He is due to enter a plea in the Georgia case on Sept. 5 and has pleaded not guilty in the other three cases. Nine of Trump's 18 co-defendants in the Georgia case, including his former lawyer Rudolph Giuliani, have surrendered to authorities.

Judges in Georgia rarely revoke bail and would be extremely unlikely to do so over social media posts or inflammatory statements on the campaign trail, according to legal experts. Trump is seeking the Republican nomination to face Democratic President Joe Biden in the 2024 U.S. election. His social media postings have become a point of contention in the Washington case in which he is also charged with election subversion. Trump's bond bars him from discussing the facts of the case with potential witnesses without lawyers present. Unlike in Georgia, it does not explicitly restrict his social media posts.

Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows was booked and released from an Atlanta jail Thursday in connection with the Georgia criminal case accusing ex-President Donald Trump and his allies of illegally trying to overturn the state's 2020 election results. Meadows is charged with racketeering and soliciting a violation of an oath by a public officer. The same day, the bond for Jeffrey Clark, a pro-Trump former Department of Justice lawyer, was set at $100,000 as well. Trump, Meadows and Clark are three of the 19 co-defendants in Willis' case. The former president is charged with 13 counts, including racketeering, criminal conspiracy and filing false documents.

"The federal government has a substantial interest in the welfare of former presidents," Jordan wrote in a five-page letter to Willis. "And because this former president is a current candidate for that office, the indictment implicates another core federal interest: a presidential election," Jordan said. The House investigation was disclosed three days after Trump accused Willis on his social media platform of "continuing to campaign, and raise money on, this WITCH HUNT. In the case brought by Willis, Trump was accused of unlawfully pressuring Georgia state officials to reverse his 2020 election loss to Biden in the state. House Republicans have sought to defend Trump in the four cases by alleging that the U.S. justice system has been "weaponized" against him by Biden.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump has replaced his top Georgia lawyer ahead of his surrender Thursday evening, sources tell CNN. “We look forward to the case being dismissed or, if necessary, an unbiased, open minded jury finding the president not guilty. Trump’s processing through the facility will likely be completed quickly because the former president and his lawyers negotiated his consent bond agreement ahead of Thursday. Trump agreed to a $200,000 bond and other release conditions, including not using social media to target the co-defendants and witnesses in the case. Just before his visit to an Atlanta jail to be booked on 13 felony counts, Donald J. Trump has shaken up his Georgia legal defense team, adding Steve Sadow, a veteran criminal defense lawyer who has taken on a number of high-profile cases. Mr. Trump’s decision comes soon after one of his lawyers, Drew Findling, and his two other lawyers in Atlanta, Jennifer Little and Marissa Goldberg, negotiated a $200,000 bond for Mr. Trump, who is one of 19 defendants in a sweeping racketeering indictment charging them with engaging in a “criminal enterprise” that sought to overturn Mr. Trump’s 2020 election loss in Georgia. Mr. Findling is unlikely to be kept on, according to a person familiar with the matter, while Ms. Little will be retained. On Thursday, Mr. Trump is expected to surrender at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, where he is likely to be fingerprinted, photographed and have his weight recorded, the protocol for all criminal defendants in the county.

Trump and his allies had hoped to use arraignments to get media attention, media reports previously said. The sheriff who oversees the jail system has said Trump's mugshot and fingerprints will be taken for the National Crime Information Center. A presidential historian said in March that if Trump's mugshot is made public, it'll likely cement himself as "folk hero" among his supporters. At the arraignment, Trump and the other defendants will be formally presented with the criminal charges and can enter pleas. Trump is the first former president to face any criminal charges for a first, second, third, or fourth time.

The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee opened an investigation into the work of the Atlanta prosecutor who has criminally charged Donald Trump and others with interfering in the 2020 presidential election in Georgia. Trump is due to surrender at an Atlanta jail on Thursday evening to be booked in the case. Eighteen other people, including lawyers who promoted false claims about the 2020 election, also were indicted in the case. Traditionally, the committee's jurisdiction is limited to oversight of federal courts and federal officials. The House Judiciary Committee earlier this year demanded similar information from the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg Jr., who is prosecuting Trump in another criminal case.

The debate – hosted by Fox News, which has amplified many of Trump’s false claims he won the 2020 election – exemplified the impossible conundrum at the center of the GOP race. Trump, exploiting his unrelenting support among GOP primary voters, has pulled off the feat of wielding multiple indictments as a political shield. But Ken Cuccinelli, who is backing DeSantis despite serving in Trump’s administration, argued that the Florida governor had used Trump’s absence to make a valuable connection with Republican voters. So will Trump stick with his strategy of refusing to elevate his rivals by appearing with them on stage – for instance, at the next GOP debate at the Ronald Reagan library in California next month? “In the next debate, there’s not going to be any Atlanta surrender and counterprogramming,” Kall said.

The amount of money most workers want now to accept a job reached a record high this year, a sign that inflation is alive and well at least in the labor market. Over the past three years, which entails the Covid-19 pandemic era, the level has risen more than 22%. Though there was a gap between the wage workers wanted and what was offered, satisfaction with compensation and upward mobility increased across the board. Job seekers, or those who have looked for work in the previous four weeks, declined to 19.4% from 24.7% a year ago. That came as job openings fell 738,000 to 9.58 million, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Attorney John Eastman on Monday was ordered to pay a $100,000 bond in the Georgia criminal case where he is accused of conspiring to overturn former President Donald Trump's loss in the state's 2020 election, a court filing shows. The bond for the racketeering charge was set at $20,000, while Eastman's remaining charges each carry a $10,000 bond, according to the court filing in Fulton County Superior Court. A consent bond order can be crafted in advance of a defendant's surrender so that they are not held in jail while the conditions of their release are worked out. Mr. Chidi, concluding that something odd was taking place on the other side of the door, turned the knob and stepped into history. What he saw, and simultaneously live-streamed from his phone, were six to 10 people who reacted with alarm to his presence. As the source, an 18-year-old Republican activist named CJ Pearson, bustled wordlessly out of the room, Mr. Chidi asked what was going on. Mr. Chidi was soon escorted out of the meeting, but once in the corridor he asked who had reserved the room. Eventually, a clerk informed him that it was the House speaker, David Ralston, a Republican, who had done so at the behest of one of President Donald J. Trump’s lawyers, Ray Smith.
