SOELDEN, Austria (AP) — Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel left the finish area of the season-opening women's World Cup race in tears Saturday after becoming the first skier to be disqualified for a forbidden type of wax on her skis. A rule in effect this season forbids the use of fluorinated wax in the pre-race preparation of skis. FIS banned the substance from its competitions after years of debate about the potential harm fluorinated wax can cause to health and the environment. We are not trying to cheat, because that is the worst thing for me,” Mowinckel told Norwegian broadcaster TV 2. Peter Gerdol, the women's race director of the International Ski and Snowboard Federation, said all skis were tested for the banned substance after both runs.

Gut-Behrami had a mediocre first run, finishing in fourth place, but she beat the entire field in her second run, when she was 0.75 faster than Brignone. And I paid for that a little bit in the first run," Gut-Behrami said. "The second run, I felt again that everything was normal and I could do what I wanted." "A little messy in some spots, but I liked my mentality going into the second run better," Shiffrin said.

Shiffrin has 88 career wins after breaking Ingemar Stenmark's long-standing record 86 last season, when she also took 14 victories over the course of the year. Miller, in Austria for the European launch of his Peak Ski Company's recreational skis, said it was not like Shiffrin was some flash in the pan. Miller, who won 33 World Cup races in all five disciplines, said that carried risks but Shiffrin was different. "For me, low on the priority scale is whether or not we can have World Cup races.

One place in the world stands as a beacon for investors in bank stocks: Japan. Japanese banks have outperformed in a year when U.S. banks have come under pressure both from rapidly rising interest rates and the regional banking crisis last spring. "We've been bullish on Japanese banks for a long time," said Chen Zhao, chief global strategist at Alpine Macro. Part of what's driving the bull case for Japanese banks is the country's yield curve. While the U.S. and other developed economies contend with an inverted yield curve that's weighing on financial profit margins, Japan continues to have a positive yield curve.

U.S. Skier and 2023 Women's FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup Overall Champion Mikaela Shiffrin poses for a photograph during an interview with Reuters in Manhattan, in New York City, New York, U.S., April 26, 2023. The Vail, Colorado, native has exceeded even the most lofty expectations that were placed on her shoulders when she joined the World Cup circuit as a highly-touted 16-year-old. Now, having broken Swedish great Ingemar Stenmark's 34-year-old record of World Cup wins, she wants to put it beyond reach for the foreseeable future. Shiffrin, who has managed to avoid any serious injury setbacks in her career, said she saw complacency as the biggest threat to her health. Shiffrin will look to continue her dominance of the sport when she competes in the season-opening giant slalom at Austria's Soelden resort on Saturday.

Pre-election polls suggested that Swiss voters had three main concerns: Rising fees for the obligatory, free market-based health insurance system; climate change, which has eroded Switzerland’s many glaciers; and worries about migrants and immigration. The Socialists, in second, added two seats to reach 41 in that chamber, known as the National Council. In Switzerland, voters also participate directly in government decision making. The Swiss did line up with the EU in imposing sanctions against Russia over its war in Ukraine. The Federal Council is considering whether to join the EU and the United States in labeling Hamas a terror organization.

Members of the National Council pose for a group picture on the last day of the legislature before national elections in October at the Swiss Parliament Building (Bundeshaus) in Bern, Switzerland on Sept. 29, 2023. Exit polls conducted for Switzerland's public broadcaster showed the country's right-wing populist party was set to further strengthen its position as the largest faction in parliament in a legislative election Sunday that saw the leading Green party lose ground. The Socialists edged up nearly a 0.5 percentage point, while the Greens lost more than 4 percentage points to fall under 10%, according to the exit poll. It appeared set to eclipse the free-market Liberal party in voter support, according to the exit poll conducted by the gfs.bern agency. A higher-for-longer interest rate environment could mean a "stalemate" for equities after their long upward march in 2023. However, history indicates that's unlikely to continue, according to Chen Zhao, chief global strategist at Alpine Macro. He expects stocks will trade sideways for some time as investors weigh competing narratives around a robust economy with the pressures of higher bond yields. Of course, stocks bounced back the following year when the Federal Reserve began to cut rates. … But at the same time, you have rising borrowing costs, rising discount factors that actually tamp down asset values."

Oil prices jumped 4% on Monday before shrugging off those gains in subsequent sessions, and gold prices have inched higher by a little over 1% since the attack. "Global markets have yet to fully price the inflation risks from developments — from higher oil prices and more defense spending," Savage cautioned. That would cause the premium [of oil prices] to go higher," said Rapidan Energy Group's President Bob McNally. This could spike oil prices well north of $150 per barrel," Alpine Macro said in a note following the incursion.
