Thousands of civilians are sheltering at the hospital, along with gravely ill patients and premature infants whose care has been interrupted. Fuel and medical supplies have dwindled as Israeli troops drew nearer in recent days. Hamas, the armed group that controls Gaza, has denied that was the case, and hospital officials have also refuted the allegation. There was no immediate information on the scope, scale or timeline of Israel’s operation inside the hospital. The Israeli military said that the goal of the raid Wednesday was not to harm civilians and that their troops were accompanied by medical teams and Arabic speakers.

John Kirby, a spokesman for the National Security Council, told reporters traveling aboard Air Force One that Hamas and Islamic Jihad “use some hospitals in the Gaza Strip, including Al-Shifa and tunnels underneath them, to conceal and to support their military operations and to hold hostages.” Kirby’s comments represented the first time the U.S. has said that Hamas is operating out of the hospitals.

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, Nov 14 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden said on Tuesday his goal during talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week is to resume normal communications between the two superpowers, including military-to-military contacts. Speaking to reporters at the White House before departing for San Francisco, Biden said he is trying to alter the U.S. relationship with China for the better, after a period of strained ties. Biden and Xi are to meet on Wednesday in the San Francisco area during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. It will be only the second in-person meeting between the two leaders since Biden took office in January 2021. But top Biden administration officials have since visited Beijing and met with their counterparts to rebuild communications and trust.

REUTERS/Doaa Rouqa Acquire Licensing RightsABOARD AIR FORCE ONE, Nov 14 (Reuters) - The White House on Tuesday said it had its own intelligence that Hamas was using Gaza's largest hospital Al Shifa to run its military operations, and probably to store weapons, saying those actions constituted a war crime. He said those groups were also prepared to respond to Israeli military operations against that facility. Israeli forces have surrounded Gaza City's Al Shifa hospital, the biggest in the enclave, which they say sits atop an underground headquarters of Hamas militants. The fate of Al Shifa in particular has become a focus of international alarm, including from Israel's closest ally, the United States.

High bond yields challenge “Pax Americana”
  + stars: | 2023-11-06 | by ( Hugo Dixon | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
There are also many reasons why “Pax Americana” – the period of U.S. dominance since World War Two - is under stress. The combination of high bond yields with a large fiscal deficit and rising sovereign debt is making it harder for politicians to govern the country. If anything, they may have a tougher job to make their fiscal maths add up than the United States because their growth prospects are not as rosy. What’s more, the near-record yield gap with the United States is bringing its own headaches by putting downward pressure on the yuan. These are consolations for the United States as it grapples with the geopolitical consequences of high interest rates.

The recent missteps have created an unwelcome wrinkle for Trump, his campaign team and the larger Republican political apparatus. Republicans have questioned whether Biden is able to serve as commander-in-chief, pointing to his age and mental fitness. And, during a rally in South Carolina in September, Trump confused former Florida Gov. “President Trump continues to dominate in primary polls and is winning against Crooked Joe Biden in the general election,” Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung said in a statement. Instead of attacking Biden directly over his age, Trump instead tries to paint Biden as “incompetent,” and “cognitively impaired,” which he argues is not solely about the president’s age.

Neither the union nor GM would confirm the tentative deal. Most recently that happened at Mack Trucks, where nearly 4,000 UAW members went on strike on October 8 after voting no on their own tentative agreement. There are a total of more than 18,000 UAW members at GM now on strike, though they could be returning to work within days. The strike had a total of nearly 50,000 UAW members on strike at one point or another, although not all at the same time. AdvertisementAdvertisementBoeing lost another $482 million on building two planes that will become the new Air Force One, according to its latest earnings report. Known as VC-25Bs, the new aircraft will be larger and more fuel efficient, allowing the US Air Force to save roughly $1.9 billion in operations and maintenance costs during the jets' 20 to 30-year lifespans. When Air Force One was last replaced during the George H.W. Revenue rose 13% to $18.1 billion, reflecting the delivery of 105 commercial aircraft, while the net loss narrowed from $3.3 billion to $1.6 billion.

The Boeing KC-46 Pegasus aerial refueling tanker is seen before a delivery celebration to the U.S. Air Force in Everett, Washington, U.S., January 24, 2019. Despite absorbing $4.4 billion in losses in 2022 – which executives said would lower the risk of future cost overruns – the unit has seen little improvement this year. Excluding last year, losses on Boeing's defense programs in 2023 exceed those from all years since 2014, according to a Reuters review of Boeing’s regulatory filings. The latest charge for Air Force One brought total losses to $2.4 billion on a $3.9 billion contract to develop two planes. A better bet, and one Boeing's defense segment is aggressively pursuing, is inking future contracts for next-generation fighter jets and cutting-edge drones.

Boeing said production and deliveries of 737s will be slowed as it does inspections and additional work to fix a pressure-sealing section of the planes. Boeing reported a $482 million loss in the quarter on a contract with the Air Force to build two new presidential jets because of higher estimated manufacturing costs. Revenue rose 13% to $18.10 billion. Deliveries of 737s slipped to 70 from 88 in the same period last year, but deliveries of 787 Dreamliners rose. Shares of the company rose about 3% in premarket trading.

Whatever effect they have on the diplomatic front, Biden’s Israel trip and Thursday night prime time television address can only help his reelection efforts at this point, especially if he faces Trump. Some Republicans even offered grudging praise for Biden’s Israel trip. Of course, many prominent conservatives still found grounds for panning the Democratic president. According to Gallup, Democratic support for Israel has been sliding for years. Voters for now are giving Biden reasonably good reviews for his handling of both Israel and Ukraine.

As much of a struggle as it was for Mr. Biden to work across party lines with Kevin McCarthy when he was speaker, a Jordan speakership would be a nightmare in the view of the president’s aides. Mr. Jordan, dubbed a “legislative terrorist” by former Speaker John A. Boehner, a fellow Republican, has long preferred bomb throwing to deal making and could push for Mr. Biden’s impeachment, government shutdowns and other moves at odds with the White House. Mr. Biden has resolutely refused to comment at any length about the chaos in the House, sticking by the old view that it is up to Congress to determine its own leadership, not the executive branch. When Mr. Jordan jumped into the speakership race a couple of weeks ago, Mr. Biden said he would work with whoever won. “They have the majority in the House,” Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, told reporters on Air Force One on the way to Israel on Tuesday.

President Joe Biden landed in Washington early Thursday following a visit to Israel where he reaffirmed his support for the U.S. ally and spoke to leaders about delivering aid to the Gaza Strip. Biden secured agreements during the trip from Israel and Egypt to allow 20 truckloads of humanitarian aid through the southern Rafah crossing into Gaza, although it’s unclear when it will be delivered. He spent several hours in Israel, but aid talks in Jordan with regional leaders were canceled following the Gaza hospital explosion. “Israel has been badly victimized, but the truth is they have an opportunity to relieve suffering of people who have nowhere to go … it’s what they should do,” Biden told reporters aboard Air Force One as he was traveling back to Washington, D.C. Biden said his argument about humanitarian assistance for Gaza was, “If you have an opportunity to alleviate the pain, you should do it.”
