Tanks have big guns, but medium-caliber cannons on other armored vehicles can be just as deadly. AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile tanks and their big guns have been getting the lion's share of attention in Ukraine, another weapon is proving equally deadly. Medium-caliber cannon — the 20-mm to 40-mm cannon found on infantry fighting vehicles, air-defense vehicles, and other platforms around the world — have been wreaking damage against infantry and other targets. Personnel load the gun of a BMP-2 amphibious infantry fighting vehicle during an arms exhibition Russia in September 2013. The effectiveness of medium-caliber cannons suggest that as armored vehicles evolve, those guns will remain part of their armament.

UAE's ADNOC awards $17 bln of contracts for gas project

Logos of ADNOC are seen at Gastech, the world's biggest expo for the gas industry, in Chiba, Japan, April 4, 2017. Italian engineering group MAIRE (MTCM.MI) and energy services group Saipem (SPMI.MI) said in separate statements they had been awarded $8.7 billion and $4.1 billion contracts by ADNOC respectively for the project. MAIRE's onshore EPC contract is worth about $8.74 billion and includes CO2 and sulphur recovery and handling, ADNOC said. The Hail and Ghasha project will capture 1.5 million tonnes per year (mtpa) of CO2, which would raise ADNOC's committed investments for carbon capture capacity to almost 4 mtpa, the statement said. ADNOC - which in July brought forward its net zero carbon emissions target to 2045 - last week said it aimed to increase its carbon capture capacity to 10 mtpa by 2030.

The COP28 summit is scheduled to take place in Dubai between Nov. 30 and Dec. 12. The United Arab Emirates' president of the conference, Jaber, has said the oil and gas industry needs to be part of the conversation on climate change. He has urged the energy industry to achieve net-zero emissions by or before 2050 and to accelerate an industry-wide commitment to reach near-zero methane emissions by 2030. "If the oil and gas industry signs up to decarbonization agreements and methane abatement that is a huge contribution to the debate," Amin said. Jaber, who is also head of UAE state oil giant ADNOC, was a controversial pick to lead the climate summit because his country is an OPEC member and a major oil exporter.

DUBAI, Sept 18 (Reuters) - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) saw revenue increase 31.8% in revenue in 2022, its finance minister said on Sunday, supporting an overall fiscal surplus last year. One of the Gulf's most diversified economies, the UAE has been developing its non-oil sectors, focusing on areas such as trade, tourism, manufacturing and logistics and financial services. It gave no figure for the full-year fiscal surplus but in May the central bank said the surplus hit $46 billion in the first nine months of 2022, supported by strong oil and non-oil revenue growth as well as high oil prices. Growth in acquisitions of non-financial assets doubled, up 94.5% in 2022 on the year. Like other consumer rates, mortgage rates are impacted in large part by what's going on in the economy. The MBA forecast sees rates falling more aggressively, predicting that 30-year mortgage rates will drop to 5% by the end of 2024. LONDON (Reuters) - Britain's BAE Systems, Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Italy's Leonardo have agreed the next steps to deliver the concept phase of a next-generation combat aircraft, BAE Systems said on Tuesday. The three nations agreed in December 2022 to collaborate to build an advanced front-line fighter to enter service around the middle of the next decade. The new Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) agreement will support discussions to set out working arrangements and capability requirements for the aircraft, BAE said. The three nations will update on the project's progress at London's DSEI international arms fair this week, BAE said. Britain's defence ministry had committed 2 billion pounds to the project, formerly known as Tempest, before Japan and Italy joined.

UAE oil giant ADNOC — run by the president of the COP28 climate conference — is expected to spend more than $1 billion every month this decade on fossil fuels, according to new analysis by international NGO Global Witness. It comes ahead of the COP28 climate summit, with Dubai set to host the U.N.'s annual conference from Nov. 30 through to Dec. 12. The person overseeing the talks, Sultan al-Jaber, is chief executive of ADNOC (the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company) — one of the world's largest oil and gas firms. His position as both COP28 president and ADNOC CEO caused dismay among civil society groups and U.S. and EU lawmakers, although several government ministers have since defended his appointment. It means that ADNOC is forecast to spend nearly seven times more on fossil fuels through to 2030 than it does on "low-carbon solution" projects.

Less than a month after hiking its 1-year certificate of deposit yield to 5.5%, SLM — or Sallie Mae — has cut its sweetened rate back down. The annual percentage yield on the bank's 1-year CD is now 5.1%, a 40 basis-point trim. At the time, the 5.5% rate made Sallie Mae's 1-year CD the most generous offered by the banks under Wells Fargo's coverage. That title now belongs to Bread Financial , which now pays a 5.5% yield on the instrument, and a 5.55% yield for customers who want to renew their 1-year CDs. Select banks have boosted deposit rates as the Federal Reserve has tightened its monetary policy since March 2022.

Trade visitors walk past an advertisement for BAE Systems at Farnborough International Airshow in Farnborough, Britain, July 17, 2018. As the UK's biggest defence contractor, BAE has manufactured much of the equipment that Britain and other governments have provided to Ukraine as it fends off Russia's invasion. Britain is a key defence supplier for Ukraine and in May became the first country to start supplying Kyiv with long-range cruise missiles. BAE, which has benefited from increased defence spending as a result of the conflict, is already providing training and repair services to Ukraine's armed forces. Western defence companies have been weighing opportunities to make weapons in Ukraine against the possible security risks, Reuters reported in June.
