Market pricing on Wednesday morning suggested a 60% probability of a rate cut at the BOE's Aug. 1 meeting. That is far less conviction than traders had before the European Central Bank enacted its own rate cut at the start of June; while pricing for the U.S. Federal Reserve to cut for the first time in this cycle in September has hit 100%. watch nowIn both May and June, seven MPC members voted to hold, as two voted to cut by 25 basis points. Headline U.K. inflation spiked higher than in the U.S. and euro zone over the last two years, but has also cooled more quickly. AMD says data center sales more than doubled in a year

AMD shares are down about 6% in 2024, even though the company is the second-largest vendor of data center GPUs after Nvidia . Investors want to see AMD take market share away from its longtime rival Nvidia with its MI300X AI chip and signal growth in its data center AI business. Earlier this year, AMD said it expected $4 billion in AI chips sales this year, or about 15% of the company's expected sales. AMD AI chip sales are reported in the company's Data Center segment, which grew 115% year-over-year to $2.8 billion, driven by an increase in AI GPU shipments, AMD said. Sales for PCs are reported in the company's Client segment, which rose 49% year-over-year to $1.5 billion, versus expectations of $1.43 billion from Street Account.

AMD sold off on its first-quarter earnings report due in large part to its MI300 sales guidance falling short of sky-high expectations. Nvidia remains the dominant player in AI chips, but AMD is continuing to carve out a lane in the rapidly expanding market. Among the highlights, Su said Microsoft has expanded its use of the AI chips for certain software applications, including messaging app Teams. AMD's data center business is now nearly 50% of companywide revenues, up from 37% in the fourth quarter of 2023. Within data center, sales of both AI chips and traditional server chips will grow in the third quarter, Su said.

U.S. airlines are reducing their capacity through the end of the year in a bid to cool an oversupplied domestic market that has led to lower fares and reduced profits despite strong summer travel demand. Airlines now expect to grow flying about 4% year over year during the final three months of the year. U.S. airline executives have noted strong demand but a U.S. domestic market that's awash in flights, forcing them to dial back growth plans, which could drive up fares. Reducing capacity could drive up fares for consumers and boost airlines' bottom lines, if travel demand holds up. Getting fares in the market that are profitable to airlines but palatable to consumers is crucial for the industry as consumers have pulled back on spending in other areas.

"Emerging markets are too important to ignore," says Malcolm Dorson, a senior portfolio manager at the U.S.-headquartered Mirae Asset, which has around $600 billion in assets under management. "Emerging markets have a multi-decade story with significant opportunities. More than 4 billion people live across emerging markets, Dorson noted, adding that each country will have "significant domestic consumption stories [and] long-term opportunities." Read previewAmerican consumers have been frustrated by high prices over past years, but there's some good news: wages have outpaced inflation since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2020, average hourly wages for most US workers have risen faster than the consumer price index, meaning income has maintained its purchasing power against rising prices. While wage gains have outpaced inflation, it can be difficult for consumers to feel the growth, and plenty of people still miss the "good old days" of lower prices. Since spring 2023, year-over-year wage growth for production and nonsupervisory workers has consistently been above inflation. While US consumers adjust to higher prices, strong wage growth should help ease affordability concerns, Krugman wrote.

That improvement in the bioprocessing end market is super important because it has been a huge overhang for Danaher shares, and the life sciences space in general. We were concerned about the bioprocessing market after rival Sartorius cut its guidance last week. The management team has effectively navigated the bioprocessing slowdown better than others and kept expectations managed — a big reason we've stuck by the stock during a difficult few quarters. Based on these strong results and the improving bioprocessing market, we are raising our price target to $295 from $280 and reiterating our 1 rating. All three operating segments are expected to post sales decline rates in the low single digits.
