The hikes also sweeten the potential total return for their stocks at a time when some Wall Street strategists are shining a light on that performance metric. That performance metric captures not just stock price moves but also gains from reinvested dividends. The difference between stock price performance and total return can be substantial, underscoring the benefits of reinvesting dividends. Consider that over the past 10 years, Linde's stock price has climbed 260%, according to FactSet. Eaton's stock price has climbed 321% over the past decade while its total return is 462%.

Opinion: Bad omens for Trump

CNN —Former President Donald Trump is the closest thing in modern political history to an incumbent who doesn’t hold the office. But these considerable advantages also raise questions about his general election chances given his inability to completely win over Republican primary voters. Despite effectively clinching the Republican nomination with a near-sweep of Super Tuesday states, Trump couldn’t escape the shadow cast by former South Carolina Gov. Haley dropped out Wednesday after consistently winning 30% or so of the GOP primary vote in the states she competed in. Undoubtedly some of the Republican voters who backed Haley in the primaries and caucuses will return to the Trump fold in November, maybe even a majority.

DETROIT – Ford Motor is rolling out Tesla Supercharging capabilities to owners of its electric vehicles in the U.S. and Canada. The Detroit automaker was the first to announce a deal with Tesla to utilize the EV maker's Supercharger network. Under the deals, companies such as Ford will adopt Tesla's charging port for future EV models. In the meantime, an adapter is needed to connect non-Tesla vehicles, which utilize different charging technology, to Tesla's network. Tesla, which designed the adapter and is handling distribution of them to automakers, did not respond to request for comment on specifics.

Over the past few months, America’s Big Three automakers — Ford, General Motors and Stellantis, the oddly named company that owns Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep — landed in big trouble. Ford, General Motors and Stellantis made billions in profit last year, even after a lengthy strike by autoworkers, and all three companies are forecasting a big 2024. The biggest threat to the Big Three comes from a new crop of Chinese automakers, especially BYD, which specialize in producing plug-in hybrid and fully electric vehicles. BYD’s growth is astounding: It sold three million electrified vehicles last year, more than any other company, and it now has enough production capacity in China to manufacture four million cars a year. A deluge of electric vehicles is coming.

Forget Tesla , the real competition in electric vehicles is low-cost Chinese automakers. Farley wants to be prepared even if the U.S. government were to step in to curtail Chinese automakers' access. Outlook Ford investors shouldn't be concerned in the short term since Chinese EV competitors won't enter the market overnight. To that end, a group of lawmakers has urged the White House to boost tariffs on Chinese vehicles and figure out a way to be "prepared to address the coming wave" of Chinese vehicles by way of U.S. other trading partners. The cost of production will become more efficient, resulting in a more competitive and hopefully profitable Ford EV product.

CNN —A Marine rapid response force is expected to leave the eastern Mediterranean Sea in the coming weeks and return to the United States, according to two defense officials, in a significant reduction of US forces in the region. The Marine rapid response force first deployed in July and was sent to the region in October. It had previously been extended to remain in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, as CNN reported. The US has maintained an aircraft carrier or amphibious assault ship in the eastern Mediterranean Sea since shortly after the October 7 attacks in Israel. The Ford carrier strike group, which had been extended several times, left the eastern Mediterranean Sea in early-January, replaced by the Bataan amphibious ready group and the Marine rapid response force.

The Tesla Cybertruck is impressive and worrying

There’s a lot to like about the Cybertruck, but it also embodies a disturbing level of individual arrogance in hard, unforgiving steel. The Tesla Cybertruck's simple interior is nice enough but, with hardly any switches or knobs, this is the easy part.

CNN —Ford stopped shipping its all-electric F-150 Lightning pickups and has been holding them for quality inspections since February 9. Ford recently began shipping new 2024 model year F-150 gasoline-powered and hybrid trucks. Ford dealers currently have F-150 Lightning trucks in their inventory, Berg said, so customers should be able to find trucks to buy until shipments start again. Almost exactly one year ago, Ford halted Lightning production because of a possible battery issue. Last year, Ford sold slightly more than 40,000 Mach-E SUVs.

CNN —Rivian announced Wednesday that it will lay off 10% of its salaried workers beginning Thursday morning, amid a quarterly loss and an increasingly competitive EV market. Rivian has a total of 16,700 employees but would not disclose how many of those are considered salaried employees. Rivian has previously, on two different occasions, laid off 6% of its workforce, as the company has looked to reduce its losses. Sales of electric vehicles has not expanded as rapidly in the past year as it had before, and automakers have blamed high interest rates for some of that slow-down. Scaringe boasted that Rivian produced the best-selling electric vehicle over $70,000 last year.

Ford CEO Jim Farley discussed a range of topics Thursday from hybrid and electric vehicles to how the automaker is dealing with international competitors. Ford Pro "If you're looking for the future of the automotive industry stop looking at FDS [full self-driving] and Tesla , look at Ford Pro," Farley said. The transformation of Pro, Farley said, has been a notable success for the company. "We always had a super successful Pro business … but there was no focus on it." Despite the success of Pro, Ford continues to lose money in its Model e business, which hosts its fleet of electric vehicles.

The narrow stock market rally could broaden out beyond megacap tech, and investors should target the "Magnificent 80" stocks, according to Bank of America's Savita Subramanian. Both are key reasons Subramanian sees the market rally broadening, alongside an expected spike in volatility tied to the U.S. election and Federal Reserve interest rate cuts. To play the expected widening market rally, Subramanian points toward the so-called "Magnificent 80" stocks, which are composed largely of companies with strong fundamentals. These names, which Bank of America screened for, have higher equity income potential than cash, touting competitive dividend yields. China touted the capabilities of its latest aircraft carrier just as a British vessel suffered an embarrassing malfunction that caused it to pull out of NATO exercises. Chinese state broadcasters recently devoted considerable airtime to discussing the Fujian, the aircraft carrier it launched in 2022, Newsweek reported. It came as the Royal Navy announced that its flagship aircraft carrier, the HMS Queen Elizabeth, had issues with a propeller shaft, meaning it had to withdraw from NATO's upcoming exercises. It is also stretching its naval capabilities by providing protection to vessels in the Red Sea targeted by Houthi rebels . And, quite simply, the Royal Navy doesn't have enough ships, particularly destroyers and frigates, he said.
