A "Hollywood ending" for Herc has been postponed, according to Bank America. Analyst Sherif El-Sabbahy double-downgraded shares to underperform from buy, citing the near-term impact from the ongoing writers and actors strike in Hollywood. Herc rents out equipment such as forklifts, generators and light towers companies across different industries, including entertainment. We expect the impact in Q2 will be notably higher, given work stoppages driven by the writers' (and now actors) strike." The stock is up 8.1% in 2023 as shares rallied more than 38% over the past 12 months.

As Black Sea-bound vessels clustered in the waters near Istanbul, wheat prices remained elevated on Thursday, up 13 percent since Monday, when Russia pulled out of a wartime agreement that had been considered critical to stabilizing global food prices. The termination of the deal, which had permitted Ukraine to safely export its grain through the Black Sea, could have significant long-term consequences for grain supplies, said Alexis Ellender, a global analyst at Kpler, a commodities analytics firm. Despite robust grain harvests from exporters including Brazil and Australia, prices could become volatile. “By not having Ukraine there as a supplier, we’re increasing the vulnerability of the global grain market to these shocks,” Mr. Ellender said. “In the short term, supplies are good, but longer term, if we get any more supply shocks, we’re more vulnerable in terms of the global market.”Another drought in Brazil, like in 2021, or a disruption to Australia’s barley and wheat crop caused by El Niño, could cause prices to soar, he said.

West Texas Intermediate crude ended the second quarter under $71 per barrel, about $10 below where it started the year. Estee Lauder, at the end of this week, acted like there was something going on, but I can't fathom what it might be. That said, there's a suit going on in Northern California with a dying 24-year-old man claiming that excess use of J & J baby powder is to blame, which could make $8.9 billion look small. CNN —An “unprecedented drought” is affecting the Panama Canal’s water supply and leading authorities to impose surcharges and weight limits on ships traversing the key global trade route, according to the Panama Canal Authority. Ships move through the Panama Canal through a lock system, which uses water from several freshwater reservoirs to float the massive cargo vessels overland. But Panama is currently gripped by drought, and water levels at least one of those reservoirs – Gatun Lake – are dropping. But the start of El Niño “could worsen” conditions, the Panama Canal authority also warned. Regional neighbors have sought opportunities to compete with the lucrative Panama Canal.

El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño La Niña Southern Oscillation, or ENSO, that occurs across the tropical Pacific Ocean roughly every five years. El Niño generally causes drier conditions in Australia and Southeast Asia, and wetter and warmer conditions in the Americas. El Niño ("little boy" in Spanish) and La Niña ("little girl" in Spanish) are weather patterns in the Pacific Ocean that can impact weather conditions around the globe. NOAA said there is an 84% chance of an El Niño with a greater than moderate strength and a 56% chance of a strong El Niño developing by the winter. While these regions may see warmer temperatures, Schmidt was careful to point out that El Niño does not guarantee a heat record in any region.

Oppenheimer thinks Estee Lauder will have trouble meeting Wall Street's high expectations. The firm downgraded the luxury cosmetic stock to perform from outperform on Monday and removed its $250 price target. The stock closed at $188.29 per share on Friday. Parikh added that Oppenheimer expects further caution on forward guidance from company management in the future, although the company could still recover over a longer period thanks to its market prominence. Last month, the stock tanked 17% after Estee Lauder posted weaker-than-expected earnings for the fiscal third quarter.

Scientists consider 1.5 degrees of warming as a key tipping point, beyond which the chances of extreme flooding, drought, wildfires and food shortages could increase dramatically. “This report does not mean that we will permanently exceed the 1.5 degrees Celsius level specified in the Paris Agreement which refers to long-term warming over many years. However, WMO is sounding the alarm that we will breach the 1.5 degrees Celsius level on a temporary basis with increasing frequency,” said WMO Secretary-General Professor Petteri Taalas, in a statement.
