Why India is so important to Apple

Cook said in February that Apple had its best sales quarter ever for iPhones in India in the quarter ending in December. Most phones sold in India are priced below even the least-expensive new Apple iPhone. India could end up being a big winner as Apple looks for non-Chinese manufacturing options. Tim Cook, Apple's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) reacts as a man shows him Apple's Macintosh outside the Apple store at Jio World Drive mall, Mumbai, India on April 18, 2023. Apple was bullish on India back then, too: "India will be the most populous country in the world in 2022," Cook told CNBC's Jim Cramer at the time, saying it had "huge market potential."
Apple on Tuesday opened its first store in India, highlighting the importance of the market to the iPhone maker's future. The first store, called Apple BKC, is located in the populous city of Mumbai. Cook posted a photo of himself and staff at the new apple store on Monday. Apple BKC runs on 100% renewable energy, Apple said. Cook traveled to India for the opening of the store, nearly seven years after his first visit as Apple CEO.
On Thursday, Mr. Cook will travel to New Delhi to open a second store, Apple Saket, at the center of the capital’s biggest mall. The Apple brand is not new to India. The iPhone is still a rare sight within the ocean of cheaper, and mostly Chinese-branded, Android smartphones that have swept across India over the past decade. Yet in India, as in nearly every other part of the world, Apple has its fans. So Mr. Bhasin addressed a letter to Mr. Cook himself — and a month later, a new iPad appeared in the mail.
MUMBAI, April 18 (Reuters) - About 300 people queued at Apple's (AAPL.O) store in Mumbai on Tuesday, as fans took selfies with Chief Executive Tim Cook, who inaugurated the first retail store run by the tech giant in India, underscoring the importance of its market. "We are so excited to open ... our first store in India." People flocked to the store from across India, hoping to be among the first to enter, in an opening event featuring local music and folk dancers. Some queued outside from the previous night to get their hands on Apple products, even though they are available online in India. Since Tim Cook became CEO of Apple, he's worked to cement his own legacy — but he still admires his predecessor Steve Jobs' leadership style. "I knew I couldn't be Steve [when I became CEO]," Cook, 62, told GQ on Monday. But that doesn't mean Cook couldn't take a leadership trick or two from Jobs' book. Under his leadership, Apple has grown into a multitrillion-dollar company. Today, the Apple CEO still uses some of Jobs' old traditions, like 9 a.m. meetings every Monday, he told GQ.
Some ABC News staff were in tears on Thursday after layoffs of respected news veterans. Kim Godwin has made positive changes as ABC News president and has faced a string of complex situations. ABC News staffers are in shock over the departure of multiple senior-level colleagues, most notably Wendy Fisher, SVP news gathering. ABC News alone lost 50 staffers on Thursday as part of the slim-down and a leadership reorganization by division President Kim Godwin. A second ABC News insider said it was unprecedented to dismiss longtime veterans in such a manner.
The final quarter saw a slight rebound, but American FDI into China has been slowing for years. Despite their suspicions of the U.S. government, Chinese officials don’t want American capitalists to stop investing in the country because their firms create jobs, bring technology and best practices. Anecdotal evidence suggests even in harmless industries like textiles and market research, decoupling is becoming the default American investment thesis. If China surprises by dramatically boosting internal demand, U.S. executives and their shareholders will be placated. BEIJING— Apple Inc.’s Tim Cook took the stage Saturday at an economic conference in Beijing sponsored by the Chinese government, giving an upbeat talk that was welcomed with applause. A bachelor's degree has become a common requirement for landing US jobs, even those that didn't previously require one. Josh Shapiro signed an executive order opening up 92%, or roughly 65,000, of state jobs to those without college degrees. They urged more states to follow to move the economy away from a preference for college degrees, restoring a sense of fairness many Americans feel is lost. Oregon also issued a temporary order in 2022 allowing those without bachelor's degrees to work as substitute teachers. A college degree may increase your earning potential, but it may not hold the keys to the middle class for much longer.
You've definitely heard of the Mediterranean diet and the MyPlate method , but what about Harvard University's Healthy Eating Plate ? The Harvard diet is actually Harvard's Healthy Eating Plate, and it can be used as a guide for "creating healthy, balanced meals," according to "The Nutrition Source," a section of Harvard's site that provides nutritional information. Add in whole grains (1/4 of your plate)In comparison to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPlate method, the Harvard diet specifies the type of grains that you should eat. Get some healthy protein (1/4 of your plate)More than most diets, the Healthy Eating Plate dives into which proteins are healthy for you and which you should limit in your diet. The Harvard diet encourages you to alternate between water, tea and coffee to pair with your meals, especially with little to no sugar.
"During the 1941-45 war, which is now being repeated, Stalin simply shot people like you. I think we're going to return to those times soon," he told Sverdlovsk governor Yevgeny Kuivashev, according to his press service. Earlier this week, he accused various regional governors of refusing to bury Wagner fighters with military honours, labelling them as lawless, corrupt bureaucrats. From eastern Ukraine, Prigozhin replied that he had stopped being a businessman a year ago and was now devoting his life to leading his fighters. "There is a ceiling (of growth) and mechanisms in place," said the source, who declined to provide more details.
My obsession is summed up pretty well by a tweet from @blagojevism: "George Santos is essentially a 19th-century character. Media depicting these characters found inspiration from real life: in a time before digital records and facial recognition, opportunity was everywhere. George Santos's brand of full-throated scammery is particularly American, something that belongs to this country as much as Abraham Lincoln and apple pie. The phrase "and if you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you" comes from his legendary real-life method. But Santos, so far, has avoided jail time, giving him at least one leg up over the Yellow Kid.
[1/2] The Apple Inc logo is seen at the entrance to the Apple store in Brussels, Belgium November 28, 2022. REUTERS/Yves HermanFeb 18 (Reuters) - Proxy advisory firm Institutional Shareholder Services (ISS) has urged Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) investors to vote for its director nominees and the pay packages for top executives, including Chief Executive Tim Cook. "Continued monitoring of the pay program is warranted to ensure that pay magnitude is supported by continued strong performance by the company," ISS said in a note. The proposed amendment to the proxy access right would enhance the company's existing right for shareholders while maintaining safeguards on the nomination process, the note added. During last year's annual meeting, Apple shareholders had voted down a proposal requesting that the company report on its gender and racial pay gaps, with 66.4% of votes cast against it.
But by early 2022, they wanted something big enough to live in full time. There’s a lot of young people, a lot of energy,” said Mr. Hados, an architect. The hilly neighborhood also offered streets with fantastic city views, and Mr. Hados wanted an apartment with a view of the Acropolis and the Parthenon. Instead, they scoured various real estate listing sites. With the money in hand and their options narrowed to a few finalists they found online, Mr. Hados flew to Greece in February in search of their ideal home.

Jerod Harris/Getty Images for Vox MediaApple CEO Tim Cook is taking a 40% pay cut in 2023, bringing his annual target salary to $49 million for the year, per documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission in January. The executive requested the pay reduction himself, coming on the heels of recent controversy surrounding his hefty salary. In 2022, Apple investors were urged to vote against Cook's nearly $100 million pay package by a shareholder advisory firm. The SEC filing references "concern" over Cook's total annual compensation in 2021 and 2022, noting the 2023 reduction comes amid "balancing shareholder feedback, a desire to continue to create meaningful performance and retention incentives, and Mr. Cook's support for changes."
An Apple a day could keep the layoffs away

For many tech workers, however, this Lunar New Year was tainted with layoff anxiety. Apple is the only Big Tech company that hasn't conducted sweeping layoffs recently. Apple has long been a lone wolf among its Big Tech peers. The chart above shows how more tech workers were laid off in January 2023 than during the first half of 2022 combined. Forget inflation, it’s all about earnings

They noted that over the last three quarters, S&P 500 reactions to earnings beats and misses have soared higher and have now surpassed the one-day market reaction to both CPI inflation and Fed policy meeting decisions. Shares of Disney sank 13.16% last November — their lowest level in more than two years — when they missed earnings estimates. “We see this as a narrative shift in the market from the Fed and inflation to earnings: reactions to earnings have been increasing, while reactions to inflation data and FOMC meetings have been getting smaller,” wrote Subramanian and Kwon. So we can expect some serious volatility over the next few weeks as companies report their fourth quarter corporate earnings. Bad news ahead: The estimated earnings decline for the S&P 500 in the fourth quarter of 2022 is -3.9%, according to a FactSet analysis.
Tim Cook, Apple's CEO, agrees to a 40% target pay cut
  + stars: | 2023-01-13 | by ( Anna Cooban | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
London CNN —Apple CEO Tim Cook has agreed to cut his pay this year after shareholders rebelled. The world’s largest tech company said it would reduce Cook’s target pay package to $49 million, 40% lower than his target pay for 2022 and about half Cook’s $99.4 million total compensation that he was granted last year. But shareholders voted against Cook’s pay package after Apple’s stock fell nearly 27% last year. This year, the executive’s share award target has been cut to $40 million. Apple’s share price, like other tech companies, plunged last year as coronavirus lockdowns shuttered some of its factories in China.

Apple CEO Tim Cook will receive a pay cut in 2023 to $49 million in total compensation, the company said in a filing with the SEC. Cook requested the change, Apple said in the filing, following a shareholder vote on his pay package. Institutional Shareholder Services recommended that Apple shareholders vote against Cook's pay package at last year's annual meeting. The number of actual shares of Apple stock that Cook vests depends on Apple's performance versus the S&P 500. Since Cook took over as CEO in 2011, Apple stock has returned 1,212% versus 290% for the S&P 500, Apple said.
Tim Cook's 2023 pay package will be slashed by 40% to $49 million, according to an SEC filing. The cut was done at Cook's request after his paydays in previous years faced pushback among some shareholders. Last year, a top shareholder advisory firm encouraged Apple stockholders to vote against Cook's $99M pay. According to a filing by Apple with the SEC, Cook's target total compensation for 2023 will be $49 million, more than 40% below what he was paid in 2022. Last year, a top shareholder advisory firm urged Apple investors to vote against Cook's pay package, which totaled nearly $99 million for 2021, or 1,447x the median salary of an Apple employee.
According to the police, a 6-year-old boy at Richneck Elementary School in Virginia used a gun legally purchased by his mother to intentionally shoot his teacher on Friday. Because, research shows that most children who get intervention early for violent behaviors recover. These can help a child develop a strong foundation for thinking things through and foster an openness or motivation to learn. And I certainly don’t want to draw sweeping and overly upbeat conclusions saying that every individual can be rehabilitated. The reportedly intentional shooting of a teacher by a 6-year-old is awful and heartbreaking.

The Federal Reserve’s Lisa Cook is wary of placing too much faith in newish economic data. NEW ORLEANS—Federal Reserve governor Lisa Cook noted recent signs that inflation has cooled, but said it has to fall much more to reach acceptable levels. “Inflation remains far too high despite some encouraging signs lately, and is therefore of great concern,” Ms. Cook said in remarks prepared for delivery Friday at the Allied Social Science Associations conference here.
U.S. holds sale of drilling rights off Alaska coast
  + stars: | 2022-12-30 | by ( Nichola Groom | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
Dec 30 (Reuters) - The Biden administration on Friday will hold a sale of oil and gas drilling rights off the coast of Alaska, the first federal auction in the region in more than five years. The agency had scrapped the Cook Inlet sale earlier this year before the IRA passed, citing a lack of industry interest. Cook Inlet stretches 180 miles (290 km) from Anchorage to the Gulf of Alaska. There are 14 active federal leases in Cook Inlet, all of which were purchased by Houston-based Hilcorp at the last federal auction in the region in 2017. Operating oil and gas platforms in the area are all in state waters, but oil production has declined substantially since peaking in the 1970s.
