The strike, which was confirmed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey as well as the Port of Virginia, began at midnight. The strike will stop the flow of a wide variety of goods over the docks of almost all cargo ports from Maine to Texas. The ports involved include the Port of New York and New Jersey, the nation’s third-largest port by volume of cargo handled. Port Wilmington in Delaware describes itself as the nation’s leading banana port, bringing in a large share of America’s favorite fruit. President George W. Bush applied the act in 2002 to halt an 11-day lockout of union members at West Coast ports.

PITTSBURGH — Kamala Harris vowed to govern as a pragmatist who wouldn’t be captive to ideology in an economic speech Wednesday while outlining $100 billion in new investments in manufacturing, a major issue in this battleground state. Pennsylvania voters react to Harris' speechEconomic concerns have been a liability for Democrats throughout the campaign cycle, as inflation rose in the post-pandemic global economy. And while domestic economic policies can have reverberating impacts, the supply chains that caused higher prices are, at least in part, beholden to global economic conditions. Voters who attended Harris' speech expressed confusion that other Americans see Trump as good for the economy. While it was an asset to Biden in polling against Trump, it appears to be a much bigger advantage for Harris. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points. It’s obvious at this point that Trump will win men by close to double digits, ditto with Harris among women. But many voters have seen "Vice President Kamala Harris" as a fresher candidate, including those who previously viewed Trump as a better steward of the economy. That would spell doom for Democrats' Senate majority.

New York CNN —More than 400 economists and former high-ranking US policymakers are endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris and her vision for the American economy, according to a document announcing the endorsement seen by CNN. “The choice in this election is clear: between failed trickle-down economic policies that benefit the few and economic policies that provide opportunity for all,” the endorsement document reads. Harris plans to roll out new policies on what she calls the “opportunity economy” during a speech in Pennsylvania, another key battleground state, on Wednesday. Several notable economists threw their weight behind Harris, including University of Michigan economist Justin Wolfers and Claudia Goldin, who won the Nobel Prize last year for tracking women’s labor participation and the evolving wage gap. The endorsement argued that Harris has a “proven track record of economic leadership,” crediting her with efforts as vice president to lower costs, cut taxes and raise wages.
