Bob Barker, longtime ‘Price Is Right’ host, dies at 99

Bob Barker, the longtime host of television's "The Price Is Right" who used his combination of comfort-food charm and deadpan humor to become an American television staple, has died, according to his longtime publicist. When producers hired Barker to host "The Price Is Right" in 1972, they hit the jackpot. "From the black and white era of television right up to the new century, Bob Barker had a real presence on two really big shows," Thompson said. Barker landed a job at a radio station in Florida, and it didn't take long for word of his smooth delivery to travel across the wires. In 1950, he moved to California to start his own radio program, "The Bob Barker Show," in Burbank.

But the Crop Watch producers are concerned that this heat could challenge the corn in particular as it continues to fill out kernels. Indiana picked up 2.5 inches last week, western Illinois 2.45 inches, Nebraska up to 1.4 inches, and South Dakota got 1 inch. That ties two other weeks out of the last six for the highest Crop Watch soybean yield prospects of the season so far. As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Iowa Democrats find themselves at a crossroads. Iowa Democrats have watched Republicans dominate in a slate of competitive contests in recent years. Former Iowa state Sen. Rita Hart, who lost a close congressional race in 2020, now leads the state's Democratic Party. Celsi pointed to the Democratic minority's inability to curtail the conservative agenda of the GOP legislature and the diminished importance of Iowa in the Democratic presidential nominating process. Crop Watch corn and soybean fields were stressed last week under mostly dry conditions, but multiple rounds of rain over the weekend prevented yield expectations from declining. Last week’s Crop Watch rain totals were mostly concentrated over the weekend, though not all areas received the needed soaking. More than 3 inches of rain were observed in South Dakota, Nebraska, western Iowa and western Illinois, and Indiana picked up 2 inches. For example, the western Iowa producer this week described his beans as phenomenal while the Ohio field was said to look incredible. The North Dakota corn is in Griggs County and the soybeans are in Stutsman County.

NAPERVILLE, Illinois, July 24 (Reuters) - Crop Watch condition scores have somewhat steadied after rising for three straight weeks as the latest week’s dry weather was offset by cooler temperatures. CONDITIONS AND YIELDIn the latest week, corn condition and yield contracted slightly while soybean condition edged upward, and soy yield stayed unchanged. Crop Watch producers have been rating crop conditions and yield potential on 1-to-5 scales. WEATHEROhio was the wettest Crop Watch location last week with around 2.75 inches of rain in two events, one with some damaging hail. But the amount that winners take home will vary by hundreds of millions of dollars, based on the payout they choose and whether their state charges taxes on the winnings. All winners pay an automatic 24% federal withholding tax on their winnings, which is considered income. Then you have state income taxes, which range from 2.9% to 10.9% depending on which state you live in. And eight states don't charge income tax on lottery winnings: California, Florida, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Crop Watch corn and soybean fields rose again last week as seasonably cool temperatures dominated, outweighing some of the underwhelming rainfall totals in western areas. Cool weather should dominate this week, favorable for corn pollination, which is currently under way in at least seven of the 11 corn fields. Average corn yield starts at 3.95 versus 4.07 in the same week last year and 3.86 in the same week in 2021. The North Dakota corn is in Griggs County and the soybeans are in Stutsman County. You should get away from city lights between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m. local time to get a good view. Thursday's lights are set to be more visible as the forecasted solar storm will result in increased auroral activity. According to the Geophysical Institute, in one rare event in 1958, the Northern Lights were even visible from Mexico City.

Nine of the 11 Crop Watch corn fields should be tasseling within the next 10 days or so. Although cool July weather generally supports big crop yields, a couple of the Crop Watch producers mentioned that their fields could benefit from some heat and sun. The weekly increase was Crop Watch corn’s largest since late June 2021, when much-needed rain finally fell in the central Corn Belt. Soybean conditions jumped to 4.05 from 3.73 in the prior week, Crop Watch beans’ biggest-ever weekly improvement but similar to that same week in June 2021. Just over 1 in 4 workers is now entitled to salary transparency by law — and proposals could double that number in the next few years. Pay transparency has become a cornerstone of the labor force in recent years, with Colorado becoming the first state to require employers post pay ranges on job ads in 2021. So far, eight states have salary transparency laws on the books: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maryland, New York, Nevada, Rhode Island and Washington. Several cities and counties like Cincinnati and Jersey City, N.J., have their own pay transparency requirements. Proponents of salary transparency say it's a crucial piece to closing racial and gender wage gaps, which have barely budged in years.

One year without Roe v. Wade How access to abortion has changed The nearest abortion clinic became a lengthy journey for millions of peopleOne year ago on June 24, 2022, the Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case that legalized abortion nationwide in the United States. When Roe v. Wade was overturned and states banned abortions, that number jumped almost 900 times to 16 million. The first map shows what the distance was when Roe v. Wade was in place and the second map shows what the distance is now, after Roe was overturned. The map on the left shows what the distance was in Guttmacher Institute’s “certain scenario” before Roe v. Wade was overturned. CHICAGO, June 13 (Reuters) - Tyson Foods will lay off 228 corporate employees in Illinois who declined to relocate to the meatpacker's Arkansas headquarters, eliminating about 46% of the total staff from two offices, the company confirmed on Tuesday. Employees have resisted a decision to consolidate corporate offices, which Tyson announced in October, as the company grapples with high costs for cattle and easing demand for meat from cash-strapped consumers. Tyson will eliminate 177 employees from an office in downtown Chicago and 51 employees in suburban Downers Grove, Illinois, starting on July 31, according to the state. The company said the layoffs were due to the consolidation of corporate offices to Springdale, Arkansas. Including layoffs at another office in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota, Tyson will eliminate about 490 corporate employees who opted not to relocate, out of roughly 1,000 workers.

CNN —The recovery of wreckage from a private plane that crashed Sunday in Virginia, killing all four people onboard, after its pilot became unresponsive is expected to begin Tuesday. The unresponsive aircraft prompted the deployment of six fighter jets as it flew near Washington, DC, officials said. Six F-16s were launched from three bases and raced to intercept the private plane, White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications John Kirby said Monday. Investigators are now examining the private plane’s autopilot function in the Virginia crash, a source familiar with the investigation said. Correction: An earlier version of this story gave the wrong source for information about the course taken by the private plane.

Those four state committees did not fundraise with the Biden Victory Fund in 2020, according to OpenSecrets. The DNC, likewise, saw over $100 million through the Biden Victory Fund and finished bringing in over $491 million during that cycle. The beefed-up joint fundraising strategy could give Biden's campaign and the Democratic Party a major boost for the general election. The new agreement allows the Biden Victory Fund to reap up to $929,600 from an individual donor, according to the DNC official. CNN —Residents of the central United States experienced poor air quality and smoke over the weekend. The effects of the fires extend far beyond Canada, with poor air quality emerging in states as far away as Missouri and New York. Several states, including Nebraska, Washington, Montana and Wisconsin, announced air quality alerts early Friday. The service in Tacoma reported the smoke would be “pushed eastward in time for the weekend.”As of Sunday afternoon, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Quality Index reported “unhealthy” levels of air quality in parts of Montana and North and South Dakota. Poor air quality caused by the smoke would mostly affect those “that are particularly sensitive to particle pollution,” they said.
