CFRA Research sees more upside for the benchmark S & P 500 over the next 12 months, even if the risk of near-term profit taking looms. The higher forecast implies a year-end target of 5,770 for the S & P 500, or a 4.5% uptick from Wednesday's close for the benchmark. Stovall's previous year-end S & P 500 target called for 4,940. A combination of more stable supply-and-demand dynamics coupled with a widening of market gains supports the more bullish outlook, CFRA said. The S & P 500 has a roughly 14% gain this year, compared to the Nasdaq Composite's roughly 15% advance.

With the second half of the year underway, there are three trades that investors should make sure they're on the right side of, Bank of America says. Bank of America expects earnings of the remaining 493 S & P 500 companies to accelerate into the end of the year. Bank of America identified avoiding dividend-paying stocks as another pain trade for later this year. Bank of America also notes that more than 200 S & P stocks currently provide higher real return potential than the 2% offered by the 10-year Treasury . The SPDR Portfolio S & P 500 High Dividend ETF (SPYD) has surged 10% year to date and more than 7% in the past month.

Some large-cap tech stocks are likely to fare better than others if investors continue to move into smaller companies. Artificial intelligence-adjacent mega-cap tech titans have been the driving force behind the current bull market rally, which began last October. Nvidia — with a market value above $2.9 trillion — has soared 136% this year alone, after climbing 239% in 2023. But a combination of disappointing tech earnings and impending interest rate cuts has weakened some of the bullish sentiment toward mega-caps. Over the past couple of weeks, energy stocks have outperformed as investors have moved away from technology, consumer discretionary and, well, everything else. I'll breaking down my market view and then describe a possible trade on a big energy stock into earnings. The new market theory was that investors would sell some of their high-flying technology winners and buy small cap laggards primed for a comeback when the Federal Reserve begins cutting rates. But on Thursday, the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite lost more than 2% , and the Russell 2000 small-cap benchmark lost even more. "If you look in small caps, they don't have their earnings follow through. CNBC's Jim Cramer examined Thursday's market action, attributing the day's brutal sell-off to the Federal Reserve's decision to hold rates steady instead of making a cut. "To me, today's terrible action in stocks was a function of the Fed not cutting rates yesterday," he said. Although Fed Chair Jerome Powell indicated a rate cut was "on the table" in September, many on Wall Street feared that would be too late. The "soft economy" is new, he added, saying last year at this time Wall Street criticized the Fed for being unable to tame inflation. "I have better things to do with my time than lambaste a Fed chief for conceivably letting the economy wither for seven more weeks," Cramer said.

Read previewFaced with higher rates and a daunting fundraising climate, hedge funds are wooing investors with a seemingly antithetical pitch: index investing with a twist. Hedge fund industry insiders are abuzz right now about "portable alpha," a blast-from-the-past strategy that's undergoing a revival. According to the Morgan Stanley white paper, it can take on a variety of forms, including "dedicated portable alpha funds, portable alpha share classes, portable alpha feeder funds and other solutions." Advertisement"It's a nice way of smuggling hedge funds into your portfolio if you're an allocator," said Jon Caplis, CEO of hedge fund research firm PivotalPath. He said much of the industry still hasn't woken up to the appetite for portable alpha solutions and the potential boon to hedge funds.

When it comes to investing in sectors such as financials and energy under Trump, Bianco believes that size matters. A Harris presidency would benefit the renewable energy industry, according to Amanda Rebello, head of Xtrackers ETF sales at DWS. That's primarily because a Harris presidency would result in more stringent fiscal policy than a Trump one. The national debt is also likely to rise faster under a Trump presidency compared to a Harris one. AdvertisementInvestors can prepare for a Harris presidency by adding fixed income assets such as US 10-year Treasury notes to their portfolios.

While we are getting a tech rally Wednesday thanks to Advanced Micro Devices (up 7%), this is the month when rotation became more than a one day event. Since small-cap companies often have more debt and higher borrowing costs, the expectation of lower rates is certainly a factor. I noted weeks ago that more fundamentally inclined investors were worried about the slower rate of earnings growth for big cap technology stocks . The Russell 2000 would also benefit any time a rotation out of tech occurs because the weightings are different. While the two sectors that comprise technology in the S & P 500 (Technology and Communication Services) are about 40% of the S & P 500, the Russell 2000 is much more diverse.

Fundstrat's Tom Lee is out with his next eye-popping prediction — and it implies good news for the market in the coming days. "In short, we see a risk-on rally starting Wed that could add +100 points to the S & P 500," he told clients. Lee said investors should expect a gain of at least 6% for small caps during this run alone. "We still see this as the 'summer of small caps' so our preference is to be buying," he said. A rise of 5% would propel the S & P 500 to a new all-time intraday high, topping the record set earlier this month.

Greg Davis, the firm's president and CIO, told CNBC's Bob Pisani that the small-cap rebound makes sense from a valuation standpoint and could keep going. CNBC's Jim Cramer said Monday the recent reshuffling on Wall Street is about more than a resurgence in small-cap stocks. "This market is not experiencing a smallcap rally, it's experiencing a rally in everything else but the tech titans. Cramer suggested the market isn't being led solely by a few smaller-cap companies that are performing well. Instead, he said, large institutions may be buying poor quality small stocks "as part of a larger basket" with indexes like the Russell 2000 or the S&P Small Cap 600. There are also larger companies that have seen huge gains recently as part of the market broadening, he said, such as McDonald's .

NEW YORK AP —Tucked within the expansive Native American halls of the American Museum of Natural History is a diminutive wooden doll that holds a sacred place among the tribes whose territories once included Manhattan. The doll, also called Nahneetis, is just one of some 1,800 items museum officials say they’re reviewing as they work to comply with the requirements while also eyeing a broader overhaul of the more than half-century-old exhibits. We need them close.”Sean Decatur, the New York museum’s president, promised tribes will hear from officials soon. The American Museum of Natural History, he noted, is one of New York’s major tourism draws and also a mainstay for generations of area students learning about the region’s tribes. He suggests museums use replicas made by Native peoples so that sensitive cultural items aren’t physically on display.

When they bought their organic vegetable farm in South Royalton, Vt., slung along the fertile floodplain of the White River, Ashley Loehr and Antoine Guerlain took comfort in the dense buffer of shrubs and trees that lay between their fields and the gently swirling water. It was 2021, a decade after the remnants of Hurricane Irene drove the river far over its banks, swamping the farm and wide swaths of the state. Determined to prevent another such disaster, the prior owner had proactively planted the trees, imagining a rising wall of woods that would at least make future flooding less grievous. There was no way to know if the barrier, 35 feet wide, would be enough — until last July, when another devastating storm surged across Vermont. The river gathered force and busted through, again overtaking fields and destroying crops.
