CNN —Kenya’s Sharon Lokedi was a surprise winner of the women’s New York City Marathon on Sunday, while Evans Chebet won the men’s race to complete a Kenyan double. There were challenging conditions for Sunday’s race as temperatures in New York City hovered around 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Farenheit). Brazilian Daniel Do Nascimento led the field for much of the men’s race, but he collapsed to the floor and received medical attention in the final stages, handing Chebet the lead. It’s expected that 50,000 runners competed in this year’s NYC Marathon – the first full-capacity race since the Covid-19 pandemic. In the men’s race of the wheelchair division, Switzerland’s Marcel Hug claimed the fifth NYC Marathon title of his career in the men’s race.

A January 6 defendant who broke two windows in the Capitol was spared prison on Wednesday. A federal judge sentenced Nicholas Rodean to home confinement instead, Politico reported. The judge said that Rodean's Asperger's Syndrome influenced him to join other rioters that day. But on Wednesday, US District Court Judge Trevor McFadden sentenced him to 240 days of home confinement instead, saying that his Asperger's Syndrome made him "particularly susceptible" to the influences that day, Politico reported. "I am really sorry about breaking the window," Rodean told McFadden, according to Politico.

A man who authorities say used a ghost gun in five homicides in Stockton, California, from April 2021 till late last month was formally charged with murder Tuesday. Police searching for a serial killer suspect arrested Wesley Brownlee, 43, during a traffic stop early Saturday. Those three deaths are among the six that police say a serial killer is responsible for. The district attorney said she expects additional charges in two other murders in Stockton, as well as an attempted murder. It’s thought to be one of the first known serial murder cases in which a ghost gun was said to be the weapon.

The Violence Against Women Act, a federal law enacted in 1994, stipulates that people cannot be charged for a forensic exam after a sexual assault. The new research did not differentiate between costs that should be covered under federal law and other supplementary medical services. Salganicoff said several organizations that assist victims of sexual assault provide lists of hospitals with forensic exam providers. According to the KFF report, some states offer more free medical services associated with the forensic exam than others.
