That's less than September's revised job growth of 297,000. After two straight months of an unemployment rate at 3.8%, the unemployment rate rose slightly to 3.9%. Some of the industries that saw job growth from September to October included healthcare, construction, and leisure and hospitality. "The labor market remains tight, but supply and demand conditions continue to come into better balance," Powell said.

[1/2] Palestinians gather at the site of Israeli strikes on houses in Bureij in the central Gaza Strip,November 2, 2023. The White House said on Wednesday there were "no plans or intentions" to put U.S. troops on the ground in Gaza. As the debate gains momentum, Gaza health authorities say more than 9,000 people have been killed in the 25-mile-long strip of land, home to 2.3 million Palestinians. Any entity that seeks to exert authority in post-war Gaza would also have to contend with the impression among Palestinians that it is beholden to Israel. Israel expects a long war but says it has no interest in re-occupying Gaza.

Brown | Afp | Getty ImagesThe job market continues to show signs of cooling, but alarm bells aren't ringing just yet, economists said. The unemployment rate rose to 3.9% in October, from 3.8% in September, the BLS said. "There's almost no exception in this report: Every indicator suggests a slowing, slackening labor market," she said. "The days of explosive growth are gone, as the labor market shifts into healthier and more sustainable territory," said Noah Yosif, lead labor economist at UKG, a payroll and shift management company. The rise in the unemployment rate may also just be a sign that the extremely hot labor market is loosening a bit, Bunker added.

What Is a Soft Landing?

But whether the central bank can meet its dual-objectives of slowing price growth and avoiding a recession—dubbed a “soft landing” by economists—remains to be seen. Threading that needle has proven to be quite elusive.”What is a soft landing? “The alternative to a soft landing is a hard landing,” Cirksena says. “How ‘soft’ that ‘soft landing’ is among citizens could vary widely,” he says. China’s slowing economy could soon become a major talking point for U.S. companies as they begin to report third-quarter earnings. WSJ’s Dion Rabouin explains. Illustration: Elizabeth SmelovApple said sales fell for the fourth consecutive quarter, including a decline in China that came as the company faces a broad economic slowdown in the country and new competition from rival Huawei Technologies. The September quarter marks the fourth straight period in which Apple reported year-over-year declines in total revenue, the longest such slump in years. Apple sales were $89.5 billion, down less than 1% from the previous year and largely in line with analyst estimates, even as net income of about $23 billion exceeded expectations.

Goldman Sachs announced its 2023 class of managing directors Thursday afternoon, giving 608 employees the coveted title. It's a smaller cohort than the bank's 2021 MD class, down 5% amid a dealmaking slowdown. Still, Goldman appears to have taken pains to promote employees in revenue-generating divisions like investment banking and trading. Goldman says the percentage of women it promoted as part of the 2023 MD class sets a record, up 1% from 2021. Two years ago, Goldman promoted the largest managing director class in its history, naming 643 employees to the designation in 2021.

What if Wine and Cider Had a Baby?

Wine is made by fermenting grapes or other fruit, although apple and pear wines are distinctive enough to have earned their own categories, cider and perry. But a growing number of producers are blurring the styles, blending grape wines and ciders or fermenting grapes and other fruit together, with remarkable delicious results. Some bottles are collaborations between wine and cider specialists, but most who are making these blends are natural winemakers, who tend to be more experimental and adventurous and less bound by industry and market conventions. Andy Brennan, of the superb Aaron Burr Cidery in Wurtsboro, N.Y., makes a wonderfully refreshing blend he calls Appinette by fermenting together farmed apples and traminette, a hybrid wine grape. Scar of the Sea, an excellent wine producer in San Luis Obispo, Calif., blends a different grape with Newtown Pippin apples each year — gamay in 2021 and palomino in ’22.

Maine is the latest state to address foreign influence in elections. The Maine referendum on the Nov. 7 ballot would ban foreign governments, or companies with 5% or more foreign government ownership, from donating to future referendum races. The Maine proposal is straightforward by targeting foreign governments and companies owned by them, while leaving untouched foreign-based corporations with no government ownership. The idea of foreign influence in U.S. elections is something that unites people in an era of deep partisan divisions. “Of course we shouldn’t have foreign governments meddling in our elections.”___Follow David Sharp on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, @David_Sharp_AP

Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 1 (Reuters) - The National Hockey League (NHL) and the union representing its players have been in contact regarding further safety measures after a player in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League died when an opposing player's skate blade cut his neck. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in an ESPN report on Wednesday that the league wants to prioritize protection but added that players have the right to make decisions for themselves. The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA), which is the sport's governing body in England and Wales, said this week the safety of players must take precedence above all else and made neck guards mandatory from Jan. 1 for all on-ice activities. The EIHA did not make neck guards mandatory with immediate effect due to anticipated supply issues but made a "strong recommendation" that players at all levels across English Ice Hockey start using a neck guard. The NHLPA also educates players each year on the benefits of wearing the cut-resistant equipment so they can make informed equipment choices.

An Orange Cake From a Revolutionary Chef

I was a baking-and-pastry devotee and did not yet have the experience of working among ornery savory chefs with their own idols and heroes. Ms. Lewis was as savory a chef as I had studied at that point, but I mostly focused on her pies, cakes and breads. Back then, I regretted when savory chefs commandeered the dessert menu. This is the trademark of pastry chefs of my generation. We have been brought up in both worlds, learning the rules and then adjusting to our moment and materials, as savory chefs do.

While predictions across the board about employee pay are forecasting slower wage growth next year, there's a notable exception: union workers, especially those in service and manufacturing roles. Compensation for union workers is up just 11% since the first quarter of 2020, compared with 14.6% for nonunion workers, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data from the second quarter of 2023. The rise in pay growth for unionized employees this year stems, in part, from significant labor action, including a string of labor deals resulting in higher pay. Many unionized workers, for example, haven't negotiated a new contract since the Covid-19 pandemic began. "Unionized workers couldn't see the same scale of wage increases over the past few years that non-unionized workers did," said Aaron Terrazas, Glassdoor's chief economist.
