“A shark came up and started attacking us and aggressively bumping us and ramming us from underneath,” Truwit recalled in an interview. Truwit was eventually airlifted to a Miami hospital, where she underwent multiple lifesaving operations before her leg was surgically amputated. She has never once missed a day of practice.”Truwit’s resiliency catapulted her to some of her best performances in the pool. By the end of last year, she had successfully competed in swimming nationals and the Paralympic swimming trials, qualifying with a time of 1:08.98. “I’m unique in that I was attacked by a shark, but I’m not unique in that we all go through hardship and trauma and tough times in life,” Truwit said.

Donald Trump calls for mass deportations during a visit to the southern border. Harris spoke about her upbringing in San Francisco and her “unlikely journey” to becoming a prosecutor, senator and vice president. Anti-Trump sentiment was also a unifying theme this week, with both progressive and conservative speakers warning of the consequences if former President Donald Trump wins in November. Harris hammered the point in her speech, telling the crowd: "In many ways Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious." Trump made the comments in an interview with NBC News during a visit yesterday to the U.S-Mexico border in Arizona.

And just 1 in 5 Gen Zers are contributing to a retirement account. Gen Z is typically defined as those born between the years of 1997 and 2012. CNN —Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced at a news conference in Phoenix Friday that he is suspending his campaign and endorsing Trump. Kennedy insisted that he was not ending his campaign, but he noted that he will withdraw his name from appearing on ballots in swing states. If you live in a blue state, you can vote for me without harming — or helping — President Trump or Vice President Harris. Kennedy running mate Nicole Shanahan praised him following his announcement and urged him to “save our children” in a social media post. But Kennedy’s support for Trump was clear Friday afternoon.

watch nowSuch arrangements were rare before the pandemic, economists said. While remote work opportunities have waned from their peak, they appear to have stabilized well above their pre-pandemic levels, economists said. "Remote work is not going away," Nick Bloom, an economics professor at Stanford University who studies workplace management practices, recently told CNBC. Why remote work has enduredRemote work has endured largely because it benefits both workers and employers, economists said. Remote work also opens up the pool of potential candidates during hiring, Bunker said.

There's still time to boost 401(k) contributions and max out your plan account for 2024, but not everyone should, according to financial advisors. For 2024, employees can defer up to $23,000 into 401(k) plans, up from $22,500 in 2023, with an extra $7,500 for workers age 50 and older. Some 14% of investors maxed out their 401(k) employee deferrals in 2023, according to a 2024 report from Vanguard. Meanwhile, the average 401(k) savings rate in 2023 — including employee deferrals and company contributions — was an estimated 11.7%, which matched a record high from 2022, the same Vanguard report found. If you can afford to go further and max out your 401(k) for 2024, here are three things to consider first, experts say.

Investors are too optimistic about the near-term prospects of AI, Vanguard said. "This is double the annualized rate of the 1920s, when electricity lit up the nation," Vanguard wrote. AdvertisementBut Vanguard global chief economist Joe Davis thinks expectations are too high, and says that stocks are overvalued even if the AI boom plays out as anticipated. For context, the S&P 500's trailing one-year earnings growth rate through the second quarter of 2024 was 10.9%, according to FactSet data. That's probably not going to happen, which means we're unlikely to experience an AI-driven economic boom in 2025," he said.

CNN —Chelsea striker Marc Guiu left Stamford Bridge stunned after producing an early contender for the worst miss of the season in the team’s 2-0 win over Servette in the first leg of their Conference League playoff. To make matters worse, Guiu then failed to score with two follow-up attempts that came from his miss. Despite Chelsea retaining possession and going on the attack again, Guiu sat hunched over in disbelief inside the penalty area. Nkunku scored the opener for the Blues from the penalty spot. “The way he works off the ball, he runs a lot, he presses, it doesn’t matter, he is going to score for sure.”

Americans are increasingly struggling with credit card debt and other loans, and consumers are paying more for basic banking services like A.T.M. And 42 percent of households carrying balances on credit cards reported that their overall debt level was “unmanageable,” up from 38 percent in 2022, the network found. More borrowers have been falling behind on credit card payments, especially those who have maxed out spending on their cards, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Making payments on credit cards as well as car loans, student loans and other installment loans has been increasingly challenging for consumers, the financial network found. (The analysis, which the network publishes annually, is based on public data and a nationally representative survey of consumers.)

Read previewChat GPT-5, the next version of OpenAI's language model that changed everything, is on the way. As AI developers wait to test GPT-5, some have found a new way to bootstrap their way to more advanced AI without an entirely new model. Fewer idle GPUs then translate to more affordable computing, as Davis explained on the No Priors podcast released Thursday. When Davis and his co-authors used the compound AI method, the layered model produced the correct answer 37% of the time — a nearly 10-fold increase. "I think people are getting more sophisticated at thinking about cost in more of a life-cycle way," Davis said.

The real evils plaguing the Wizarding World cut deeper than one powerful villain. And based on Harry's thoughts right after the Battle of Hogwarts, his actions didn't get to the root of the issue. In the Wizarding World, house-elves are imprisoned and forced to do manual labor despite the fact that wizards could easily accomplish those tasks using, you know, magic. If the Republican convention’s message for America last month had to fit on a bumper sticker, it would read, “Trump is God.” Delegates deified him relentlessly as the risen Trump after the assassination attempt. They told me over and over that he was spared to save the country with his re-election. Only on the final night did Donald Trump come crashing down to earth with his nomination speech. The most divisive man in America was suddenly getting a measure of good will from skeptical voters after he was nearly killed. The good news for Democrats is that Harris seems to understand this.

Traditionally, home sellers in the US have been responsible for paying real estate commissions. The standard 5% or 6% commission was usually split between the seller’s broker and the buyer’s broker, referred to as cooperative compensation. After August 17, sellers and their agents are prohibited from advertising how much they would pay to a buyer’s agent in the MLS. Given the new rules, McMahan said she might reconsider her offer of a 3% buyers’ broker commission the next time she sells her home. These agreements are intended to inform buyers that they may be responsible for covering their Realtor’s commission payment themselves if a seller chooses not to offer it.
