Rents are rising all over NYC so I knew my time was coming, but I didn't expect a $200 increase. I'm now sharing groceries with friends, doing zero-spend days, and going to mostly free events. In an effort to cut back on mindless spending, I marked two days on my calendar, every month, that are my zero-dollar days. Finding free eventsOne of the reasons I enjoy living in New York City is because there's always something exciting going on.

To afford a "fair market" one bedroom in NYC, minimum wage workers would need to put in 111 hours a week, a study found. They'd have to work even more to afford rent in Dallas, San Jose, or Chicago. When looking at affordability for minimum wage workers, the United Way researchers say that even a fair-market price is out of reach based on their current rate of pay. Instead of paying sky-high rent prices, minimum wage workers are cramming into tighter living arrangements, going homeless, or far exceeding the recommended portion of one's income they should spend on rent. Until this month, the minimum wage for New York home aides was $15 an hour, but got a bump to $17 an hour.

CNN —Producer Ryan Murphy has premiered three series in roughly a month, so a degree of overlap is perhaps understandable. Even so, the new season of his long-running FX franchise, this one dubbed “American Horror Story: NYC,” feels like a companion in its central themes to “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which premiered last month on Netflix. This being “American Horror Story,” though, the emphasis skews toward the serial killing, dropping hints and clues about who might ultimately be responsible. “American Horror Story” has hardly been known for its restraint, which made the relative lack of bloody excess in these episodes notable, with less emphasis on the horror than the serial-killer aspect. FX will air back-to-back “American Horror Story” episodes over the next four weeks (with subsequent availability on Hulu), by which time the monster’s identity should be revealed.
