July-like heat sends temperatures skyrocketingTemperatures 10 to 20 degrees above normal levels for September could break or tie close dozens of records as heat builds over Labor Day weekend and into Tuesday. Aug 31 (Reuters) - The Texas Supreme Court on Thursday allowed a state law banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors, such as puberty blockers, hormones and surgeries, to take effect while it hears a legal challenge to the statute. The ruling came after a judge last Friday blocked the law in response to a challenge by the families of transgender children and doctors. Texas is one of at least 20 states that have banned or restricted gender-affirming care for minors. Mainstream U.S. medical groups have opposed the bans and maintain that gender-affirming care improves transgender patients' mental health and reduces the risk of suicide. Several other similar state laws have been blocked by judges, though a federal appeals court earlier in August revived Alabama's ban on gender-affirming care for minors.

Former President Donald Trump is seeking to sever his criminal election interference case in Georgia from any of his 18 co-defendants who are demanding that the case proceed quickly to trial, a Thursday court filing showed. There are "substantial adverse procedural and substantive 'effects' President Trump would endure" if he is held to the same schedule, Sadow wrote. He is set to participate in another trial starting in late September in federal court in Florida. Trump has been charged with 91 total counts in four separate criminal cases as he campaigns for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. His lawyers in his two federal cases tried to push off his trial until after the November 2024 election.
