"Love by Design" details six ingredients for love to emerge: mutual attraction, trust, respect, compassion, shared vision and loving behavior. CNN: You talk a lot about “emergent love.” Can you explain more about that concept? The relationship is based on equity: They give to the relationship and receive from it, too. Newly appointed France's Prime Minister Michel Barnier arrives for the handover ceremony with outgoing Prime Minister Gabriel Attal at the Hotel Matignon in Paris, France, September 5, 2024. Prime Minister Michel Barnier announced steep public spending cuts and targeted tax hikes for France's biggest companies and wealthiest individuals on Tuesday, saying there was no other way to narrow a gaping budget deficit. Tax increases would be targeted and temporary, he said, without giving further details. ING economist Charlotte de Montpellier said Barnier had been too light on detail to know if the timeline for cutting the deficit was credible and questioned whether the tax hikes would be temporary. "... the likelihood of these tax hikes becoming permanent is significant," de Montpellier said.

My husband and I often travel in a small camper van together. We try to give each other space, stay positive, and meet other people when we can. Living in cramped quarters like our van can definitely challenge our relationship, but we've learned to make it work. AdvertisementWhile our van is indeed a small space, the flip side of "cramped" is "cozy." Our van is our safe space, and whatever compromises we need to make to keep it that way are absolutely worth it.

As Microsoft investors get ready for quarterly earnings this month, there's one particular metric that's become increasingly important: finance leases. Overall, Microsoft made $19 billion in capital expenditures in the latest quarter. "It's an insane ramp," said Charles Fitzgerald, a former Microsoft manager who writes about capital expenditures on his blog Platformonomics. Investors will get further clarity on Microsoft's lease finances when the company reports fiscal first-quarter results in late October. Executives at Microsoft and other top tech companies have approved higher capital expenditures in the past two years, often to boost their performance in generative AI.

Euro zone inflation fell to 1.8% in September, coming in below the European Central Bank's 2% target, flash data from statistics agency Eurostat showed Tuesday. The reading was in line with the expectations of economists polled by Reuters, after annual inflation hit a three-year-low of 2.2% in August. The core inflation rate, which excludes more volatile energy, food, alcohol and tobacco prices, came in at 2.7%. The figures come after September inflation eased below the 2% European Central Bank target in several key euro zone economies, including France and Germany. European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde on Monday said that policymakers were becoming more confident about inflation returning to the 2% target.

Though the S & P 500 is up more than 20% in 2024, Evercore ISI sees a patch of volatility ahead as the November presidential election approaches — and the firm has stocks to play either outcome. Evercore ISI thinks that automotive components manufacturer Aptiv could rise in the event of a Harris/Walz win. Evercore ISI called the bank "a flight to quality name," saying it was in a competitive position despite an uncertain backdrop. If Trump wins, Charter Communications is one stock that could benefit from a "potentially benign tax environment" and a pickup in M & A activity, Evercore ISI said. Supermarket operator Kroger could also outperform due to its ability to pass through higher prices to consumers, according to Evercore ISI.

No, the tech that’s going to save humanity will be powered by the tech that very nearly destroyed it. The tech industry’s solution, for now, is nuclear energy, which is more stable than wind or solar and is virtually carbon-emission-free. Amazon is working on putting a data center campus right on the site of a Talen Energy nuclear power plant in Northeast Pennsylvania. And while AI doomer predictions often get brushed off as alarmist forecasts, you can’t as readily dismiss the folks who are concerned about nuclear energy. Bottom line: There’s no AI future without a serious uptick in our power supply, which makes the expansion of nuclear power practically unavoidable.

Microsoft on Tuesday announced a major update to Copilot, its AI system, that it says marks the first step toward creating an “AI companion” for users. The updated Copilot has new capabilities, including real-time voice interactions and the ability to interpret images and text on users’ screens. Copilot’s update also reflects Microsoft’s specific vision for how everyday people will use AI as the technology develops. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman contends that people need AI to be more than a productivity tool, they need it to be a kind of digital friend. “I think in the future, the first thought you’re going to have is, ‘Hey, Copilot,’” Suleyman told CNN in an interview ahead of Tuesday’s announcement.

Consumers who heat with electricity will be hit the hardest, with their costs projected to rise 13.6% to $1,208 for the winter season, the association found. The expense of maintaining and upgrading the electric grid is driving up costs, particularly in the West, where fires have ravaged the grid and electric heating costs could soar nearly 23%. The price tag for heating with propane will rise 7.3% to $1,442 this winter, while natural gas users will see a 7.2% increase to $644. Natural gas prices have stabilized but are expected to rise over the winter as US exports increase, said Mark Wolfe, the association’s executive director. But those who heat with oil will catch somewhat of a break after a pricey heating season last year, with costs expected to rise only 6.1% to $1,963 this winter.

While weight training is on the up, so is running: Running remained the most popular sport on Strava in 2023, up 4% since 2022. China's slowing crude demand growth and economic struggles are dampening oil market sentiment. Global benchmark Brent crude oil futures were up 0.17% to $71.82 per barrel at 2.14 a.m. This would be a big shift in policy, since Saudi Arabia has been leading OPEC and the group's allies, including Russia, in maintaining oil supply cuts since late 2022. AdvertisementDespite the downside pressure on oil prices, things could change quickly if geopolitical uncertainty rises further in the Middle East. The US may also provide some support to the market as crude oil inventories hit a two-and-a-half year low as of September 20, the latest data available.
