How do you think the shooting will shape or change the convention, and Trump? The key player here will be Trump, of course, and his nomination speech may well be the most-watched address in a generation. Patrick: How far do you think Republicans will take it, Frank? Tesla 's massive rally might soon run out of steam, Wells Fargo warned investors in a new note. Analyst Colin Langan reiterated his underweight rating on the electric vehicle manufacturer, contrasting with Wall Street's bullish sentiment. TSLA YTD mountain TSLA YTD chart Langan attributed the rally to temporary optimism driven by better deliveries, the approval of Elon Musk's compensation package , hype around Tesla's robotaxi and technical factors. Retail interest likely surged in recent months, while professional investors took the opportunity to cover short positions or raise underweight holdings. "The stock rose ~40% (S & P +4%) over the last month, mostly driven by 'razzle-dazzle' headlines as most fundamentals remain weak," Langan wrote in a report entitled, "Will retail puppy love last?"

At the same time, the social media industry has broadly retreated from efforts to clamp down on misinformation. The ease at which false rumors and conspiracy theories rapidly spread on social media threatens the public’s ability to sort truth from fiction. The deluge of disinformation surrounding the Trump shooting shows, once again, that this problem isn’t going away anytime soon. With less than four months until Election Day, the leading social media platforms appear resigned to let the status quo fester. Others get in on the act for social media clout – viral posts can translate into dollars for some online influencers.

Some of Elon Musk’s closest friends have helped start a new super PAC meant to help former President Donald J. Trump, creating an avenue for Mr. Musk and his $250 billion fortune to potentially play a significant role in the 2024 presidential race. Mr. Musk had not donated to the super PAC as of June 30, the end of the most recent disclosure period, according to a Monday filing with the Federal Election Commission. On Saturday, soon after Mr. Trump survived an assassination attempt, Mr. Musk went on X to issue a full-throated endorsement of the former president. The super PAC, according to three people close to the organization, is led in part by Joe Lonsdale, a co-founder of the software company Palantir and a politically ambitious venture capitalist in Austin who serves as a political confidant to Mr. Musk. Mr. Lonsdale, the people say, has played a key role in fund-raising for the group in its opening weeks, encouraging his network of influential entrepreneurs to support the super PAC.

Trump victory trades to swell after shooting, investors say
  + stars: | 2024-07-14 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
Saturday's shooting at U.S. former President Donald Trump's election rally raises his odds of winning back the White House, and trades betting on his victory will increase this coming week, investors said on Sunday. Trump was shot in the ear during the rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday in what the authorities were treating as an assassination attempt. The first shooting of a U.S. president or major party candidate since a 1981 assassination attempt on Republican President Ronald Reagan could upend the Nov. 5 rematch between Republican Trump and President Joe Biden, a Democrat, which has been tight in opinion polls. World leaders and U.S. politicians condemned the shooting, while some industry executives, including Tesla chief Elon Musk, declared their support for Trump. Investors also expect an extension of corporate and personal tax cuts expiring next year, fuelling concerns about rising budget deficits under Trump.
