In addition to locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn, Cohabs has properties scattered across European cities including Madrid, Paris, London and Milan. Ishan Abeysekera decided that choosing a communal living space would increase his chances of making friends in a new city. Valentina Duarte | CNBC Make ItAbeysekera actually didn't set out to have so many roommates — or any roommates at all. On a whim, he looked up communal living in Brooklyn and came across Cohabs. Each person has their own locker in the communal living area, and the six refrigerators have enough space for each tenant to have their own shelf for their groceries.

Thomas is among what retirement experts are calling "silver squatters" — adults in their mid-50s who are even more woefully unprepared than some boomers, despite being about a decade away from retirement. This group of Gen Xers — the generation of Americans aged 43 to 59 — largely expects to postpone or work past their retirement. AdvertisementA majority also don't expect to receive any inheritance, despite their boomer predecessors holding onto trillions in wealth. The gap in retirement readiness could be due to the "unique" challenges of Gen Xers, according to Dylan Tyson, the head of retirement strategies at Prudential. Around half of Gen Xers are saving without a general plan for retirement, Prudential found.

A county judge in Ohio temporarily blocked several state laws on Friday that combined to create a 24-hour waiting period for obtaining an abortion in the state, in the first court decision on the merits of a 2023 constitutional amendment that guarantees access to the procedure. The Dobbs decision that replaced Roe sent the decision-making power back to the states, Young wrote. Yost’s office said 24-hour waiting periods and informed consent laws were consistently upheld under Roe, which was the law of the the land protecting legal abortions for nearly 50 years. “We have heard the voices of the people and recognize that reproductive rights are now protected in our Constitution,” Yost spokesperson Bethany McCorkle said in a statement. These are essential safety features designed to ensure that women receive proper care and make voluntary decisions.”

A New York City suburb's ban against public mask wearing was challenged in federal court on Thursday, alleging the law violates the Americans with Disabilities Act and needlessly opens health compromised individuals for ridicule. BOISE, Idaho — A Montana motorcyclist who was missing for five days after crashing along an Idaho mountain highway survived by drinking creek water until he was found, authorities say. Demoss’ shouting went unanswered until Common caught sight of him while searching five days after the Aug. 11 crash. After the other travelers saw his motorcycle parked on the side of the highway, they stopped at the next turnout a few miles down the road to wait for him. Demoss never arrived, so his companions went back to check on him, stopping at the trailhead where they had last seen his bike. Neither Demoss nor his motorcycle was there.

Donald Trump calls for mass deportations during a visit to the southern border. Harris spoke about her upbringing in San Francisco and her “unlikely journey” to becoming a prosecutor, senator and vice president. Anti-Trump sentiment was also a unifying theme this week, with both progressive and conservative speakers warning of the consequences if former President Donald Trump wins in November. Harris hammered the point in her speech, telling the crowd: "In many ways Donald Trump is an unserious man, but the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious." Trump made the comments in an interview with NBC News during a visit yesterday to the U.S-Mexico border in Arizona.

Kamala Harris had a message for America about Donald Trump and JD Vance on Thursday night. “Simply put, they are out of their minds,” she said to cheers from thousands of Democratic convention delegates in United Center. She was talking about their draconian abortion stances but it could have applied to so much more. Well, we trust women.”Harris has to prove that she is a woman America can trust, as she tries to get the country to do something it has never done before: elect a woman as president. She promised that she would “proudly” sign a bill restoring abortion rights across America.

CNN —Human brain samples collected at autopsy in early 2024 contained more tiny shards of plastic than samples collected eight years prior, according to a preprint posted online in May. “Compared to autopsy brain samples from 2016, that’s about 50% higher,” Campen said. Nanoplastics are the most worrisome plastics for human health, experts say, because the minuscule pieces can take up residence inside individual cells. In that report, the consortium determined plastics are associated with harms to human health at every single stage of the plastic lifecycle. A March 2024 study found 1 liter of bottled water — the equivalent of two standard-size bottled waters typically purchased by consumers — contained an average of 240,000 plastic particles from seven types of plastics.

Researchers first spotted the insect, dubbed the “ManhattAnt,” while doing a survey on ants in New York City in 2011. By comparing the New York ants with the European ones, Seifert was able to confirm the ant’s identity. Because the nests work together instead of against one another, they can spread faster and easily dominate an area by outcompeting native species, he added. “One of the things we know about a lot of invasive ant species is they displace the native species, and the native species that they’re displacing usually have very specialized roles in the ecosystem, so you’re sort of disrupting that ecosystem when these species get introduced,” Moreau said. Time will tell whether the ant has become more than just a nuisance and is disrupting the ecosystem, Penick said.

So Dr. Tim Spector, a British epidemiologist, gut health expert, and cofounder of the science and nutrition company ZOE, has a go-to breakfast combination that he eats every morning that is balanced and gut-healthy. "I used to have granola with some skim milk, orange juice, and tea, and I thought that was a super healthy breakfast," he said. But since swapping to a more gut-friendly breakfast, Spector has found that he stays full "right through to lunch," and his energy levels are consistent all morning. A 2020 review of studies published in the journal Food Frontiers suggested that polyphenols are indeed good for gut health, and also that they help prevent chronic diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases.

A new path to better sleep: Evening exercise breaks
  + stars: | 2024-08-23 | by ( Dana Santas | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
Now, a small efficacy study published July 16 in the journal BMJ Open Sport & Exercise Medicine suggests a simple yet effective strategy to improve sleep duration: incorporating short resistance, or strength training, exercise breaks in the evening. The findings were compelling: The participants slept an average of 27.7 minutes longer when they took regular exercise breaks compared with when they sat uninterrupted. “Our research found that interrupting evening sitting time with short bursts of light intensity exercise improved sleep duration and did not disrupt sleep quality,” Gale added via email. “Adding quick, simple and light resistance exercise breaks to your evening routine could be a simple way to improve your sleep and health,” he said. Better sleep could be just a few short exercise breaks away.
