REUTERS/Sarah Meyssonnier/File PhotoBARCELONA, Aug 2 (Reuters) - Spain's Socialists (PSOE), seeking to form a government after a hard-fought national election, should not take the support of Catalonia's separatist parties for granted, one of their leaders said on Wednesday. "It is Pedro Sanchez who has to make the moves to get support," Aragones said. To renew its support, ERC wants further talks, to cut the region's contributions to the national public finances, and to take control of local train services. Junts is demanding a referendum on independence and an amnesty for all separatists facing legal charges related to the failed 2017 independence bid. Aragones said the two parties' leverage could help obtain a referendum and amnesty, but also concessions in financial or cultural issues.

When former President Donald J. Trump appears in court before Judge Tanya S. Chutkan on charges of conspiring to subvert American democracy, it will not be the first time she has dealt with high-profile questions related to Mr. Trump’s attempts to stay in power after losing the 2020 election. Nearly two years ago, Judge Chutkan rejected Mr. Trump's efforts to prevent his White House records from being given to the House committee investigating his actions leading up to and during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol by his supporters — delivering a swift and sharp rebuke about the limits of his ability as former president to invoke executive privilege. “Presidents are not kings,” she wrote, “and plaintiff is not president.”It is not clear when Judge Chutkan, 61, and Mr. Trump will first meet. He is set to appear before a magistrate judge for an initial court appearance on Thursday, where he is likely to be arraigned and enter a plea of not guilty — just as he did in June in a separate case involving his retention of classified documents after leaving the White House.

While he faces classic signs of a campaign in free fall, including staffer layoffs and donor concern, DeSantis’ problems are not all self-inflicted. Keith Davis, who has served as Sheriff of Wayne County since 1997, is a Trump voter who is now backing DeSantis. Scott Olson/Getty ImagesIn his first post-reset swing through Iowa, DeSantis had mixed results. While he was in Iowa, DeSantis also repeatedly paid tribute to Reynolds after Trump alienated some caucus-goers by badmouthing the state’s popular Republican governor. But what DeSantis is trying to do, by running a classic Iowa campaign, is a ultimately a conventional move.

Mr. Smith is not the first special counsel to investigate Mr. Trump. Mr. Smith, by contrast, faces no such limits given that Mr. Trump is no longer in office. Mr. Mueller said little when faced with a barrage of falsehoods pushed publicly by Mr. Trump and his allies about him and his investigative team. During Mr. Trump’s arraignment in Miami in June, Mr. Smith sat in the gallery, closely watching the proceedings. Some in the courtroom suggested he stared at Mr. Trump for much of the hearing, sizing him up.

Here is a closer look at the charges. One of the charges, a conspiracy to violate rights, is Section 241 of Title 18 of the United States Code. A conviction on this charge is punishable by up to five years in prison. But in a series of cases in the 20th century, the Supreme Court upheld expanding use of the statute to election-fraud conspiracies, like ballot-box stuffing. In invoking the statute, the indictment frames it as “a conspiracy against the right to vote and to have one’s vote counted.” Essentially, Mr. Smith has accused Mr. Trump of trying to rig the outcome of the election to falsely claim victory.

Dish Network enters dangerous financial orbit

Billionaire Charlie Ergen staked Dish Network’s (DISH.O) future on wireless spectrum, a decision looking worse by the day. The satellite operator has spent some $25 billion since 2008 acquiring the finite resource used to carry data. In January, Dish issued $1.5 billion of senior notes, secured by spectrum, with an 11.75% coupon. The satellite operator said on July 17 that its 5G network covered nearly three-quarters of the U.S. population. Dish must meet additional thresholds in 2025 or it could face up to $2.2 billion in fines and might be forced to forfeit wireless spectrum.

"Is it because MCI (mild cognitive impairment) or early dementia type-symptoms in Blacks are caused by other reasons more so than Alzheimer's?" In 96 dementia trials from 2000-2017, diverse populations only made up around 11% of enrollment, according to a 2018 study. Among Black people who died of Alzheimer's, their dementia was more likely to result from multiple causes, such as vascular disease. "Is it that it's not Alzheimer's disease?

When David Yun commissioned a custom sign to hang on the wall of his Korean-Southern tapas restaurant, C as in Charlie, he chose LED lighting over neon so that he could change the sign’s color on a whim. Soon, though, the hazy red glow spilling out onto the street became a calling card for the dugout-size restaurant in downtown Manhattan. “Red is risky,” Mr. Yun said. It shows our identity.”With its bright red sign, C as in Charlie joined a herd of restaurants that have embraced a certain aesthetic: dim interiors lit primarily in red. Rouge Room’s crimson-hued ceiling and backlighting smooths the shift from daytime — when the restaurant opens up to the pool at the Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa — to dinnertime, when the drapes close and ruby light reigns supreme.

The White House was studying the recommendation, a senior administration official said in a background briefing on Monday. The program traces back to a once secret warrantless surveillance program that the George W. Bush administration started after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. After the program was exposed, Congress legalized a version of it. The U.S. government can currently use the program to gather information about other governments, counterterrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. How the government can use its database of intercepts that have been already collected when scrutinizing Americans has been a subject of heated debate.

AT A MAY awards show, Oscar Isaac, the 44-year-old actor known for his cool-dad style, smoldered in a slate-blue outfit. Elegant and restrained, the monochrome Ferragamo ensemble had one particularly memorable feature: Its trousers kicked out, subtly, at the hems. Rhodes’s Pulitzer-winning book has been having a renaissance among people grappling with the potential destructive force of other new technologies. Writing in The Atlantic, Charlie Warzel called it “a kind of holy text for a certain type of A.I. researcher — namely, the type who believes their creations might have the power to kill us all.”Long before “Oppenheimer,” a different portrayal of atomic science captured my imagination. (I think it works best as a live play, but if you’re looking for streaming options, the BBC did make a television version starring Daniel Craig in 2002 and a radio version starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Simon Russell Beale in 2013.) Donald Trump is expected take the stage tonight in Iowa at the state Republican Party’s biggest fund-raiser of the year. But as became even more clear last night, Trump’s biggest challenges may lie elsewhere. Federal prosecutors yesterday added major accusations to an indictment charging him with mishandling classified documents, including an assertion that Trump sought to have security camera footage at Mar-a-Lago deleted. The prosecutors also added a charge accusing the former president of showing visitors a classified battle plan related to attacking Iran. Meanwhile, Trump is also on the cusp of another federal indictment in connection with his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

President Biden has quietly ordered the U.S. government to begin sharing evidence of Russian war crimes in Ukraine with the International Criminal Court in The Hague, according to officials familiar with the matter, signaling a major shift in American policy. The decision, made by Mr. Biden in recent days, overrides months of resistance by the Pentagon, which argued that it could pave the way for the court to prosecute American troops, according to the officials. It was unclear why Mr. Biden let the impasse linger or what finally led him to resolve it. Already, they have shared some of that evidence with Ukrainian prosecutors but had refrained from doing so with The Hague. Since the International Criminal Court was created by a 1998 treaty to investigate war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity, administrations of both parties have viewed it with wariness and sometimes hostility.
