ISIS 'Jamaican cleric' Shaikh Abdullah Faisal is on trial for terror in state court in Manhattan. The defense counters that Faisal's hate speeches and matchmaking for ISIS brides don't equal terror. Instead, he gave impassioned speeches in London and beyond about violent jihad, and played matchmaker for would-be ISIS brides. "Focus on the substance of this case," not all the "noise" about ISIS and terror, defense lawyer Alex Grosshtern told jurors. "The defendant in effect was ISIS before ISIS," which didn't declare a worldwide state, or "caliphate," until 2014, Galperin told jurors.

#TikTokMadeMeBuyIt: Moving to a brand new place at 23 can be overwhelming. I wasn't sure how I was going to move all of my clothes from Texas, but I found out about "moving bags" from TikTok. Moving bags (the blue ones pictured) are large water-resistant carriers that fit just as much as a cardboard box of the same size, but they have handles and back straps for easy transportation. You can use them as luggage on an airplane, too. Jordan Hart/Insider
Rats are taking refuge in cars, chewing through wires and leaving owners with big repair bills. There are three things you can do to help prevent rats from living under the hood of your car. Do not park above or near storm drain basins or openings to sewers – Norway rats are called sewer rats for a reason. One woman told The Times that a rat chewed through a sensor wire in her car, which cost $700 to fix. "What they're doing is inadvertently attracting rats or other rodents onto the property," he said.
The department began opening investigations into families days later, but Laird told NBC News in March that she didn’t have plans to move. The family’s story reveals part of the impact Abbott’s directive is having on the families of trans youths in Texas. They left out of fear that Noah would lose the care recommended by his medical team, but also because the state was becoming increasingly hostile for trans people, Laird said. He added that Laird and Noah are far from the only ones who have left the state — he knows of several. At least three other families with trans kids have also said in interviews that they have moved.
My dad had many creative ways to save money, including zig-zagging all over NYC to avoid road tolls. Growing up, I learned the value of money from him, and I've applied his lessons over and over. When I wanted to buy a house, I slashed my spending and took on side gigs to save a down payment. Following in my father's careful footsteps has allowed me to afford two homes and a new car, all on a teacher's salary. I love to travel and, as a teacher, I'm able to take advantage of summers off.

One of New York City's newest gay bars has had a brick thrown at its front window four times in recent weeks, its owner says. The latest incident, just this past weekend, is being investigated as a hate crime, the New York Police Department confirmed. The brick didn’t completely shatter the glass, and a department spokesperson said in an email no one was injured. The first attack occurred on Oct. 20, and DeParolesa said the bar didn’t report it because it happened after hours. The NYPD confirmed a similar incident occurred two days later, and again this weekend.
And that’s exactly where inflation can get “sticky,” meaning once prices for services rise they tend to remain at those levels for some time. “When you have strong price pressures in the services sector, they’re likely to last longer,” Nicaj said. That’s the risk that you also take as a business raising prices, because you may lose clients.”To Ryczko, it’s a strategic balancing act. Courtesy Genora Boykins and Sharon Owens“I don’t know of any goods that we are utilizing that haven’t increased in cost,” Boykins said. “Even if it doesn’t necessarily turn around, at least you don’t want [prices] to continue to escalate month after month after month.”
We've talked before about why boutique banks oftentimes rank higher among workers than their bulge-bracket peers. Insider's Bianca Chan and Carter Johnson dug into the most sought-after coding languages across Wall Street. C++, which was created in 1983, is still a mainstay despite being older than a good chunk of the people using it on Wall Street (and the person writing this newsletter). While that's certainly true, plenty of programming languages have sticking power. Perhaps the best example is COBOL, a 63-year-old programming language still being used today. But what would be a smart decision is reading this story mapping out the top programming languages for a variety of roles and industries across Wall Street.
As of Nov. 1, 46% of all NYC job listings included salary ranges, according to data on tens of thousands of job ads from Glassdoor, the job search platform. Now, several weeks out, more employers are listing their pay ranges, though disclosure is far from universal: 60% of job listings in NYC have employer-provided salaries as of Nov. 12, according to Glassdoor. Who's complying with the new pay range law? In October, before the law was enacted, employers who opted to provide pay ranges on job ads had a median pay range of $10,000. By November, that median salary range widened to $20,000.
I've since built wealth through real estate, but can't bring myself to buy life insurance of my own just yet. But on the whole, real estate has been a great way to have invested the proceeds from my father's life insurance policy and inheritance. Now that I am a mom, I know that I should probably get a life insurance policy of my own. For now, my "insurance policy" is aiming to take excellent care of my body, mind, and finances. Life insurance was a moving gift from my dad.
Ridloff has been running most of her life – a form of solace in the busiest, most intense periods of her acting career. But the collective spirit and struggle of her fellow competitors at the NYC Marathon, her first time racing the 26.2-mile distance, was like nothing she had previously experienced in the sport. “This truly was a transformative experience for me,” Ridloff, whose recent credits include Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” and post-apocalyptic TV series “The Walking Dead,” tells CNN Sport. Gavin Doremus/Brooks RunningConditions for this year’s NYC Marathon were brutal, particularly for those competing for the first time and unaccustomed to running in heat. Ridloff ran the NYC Marathon to raise money for PS347 in New York, where she used to teach.

She left Wall Street to pursue her passion during the Great Resignation. I left my job at Goldman Sachs to pursue my lifelong dream of being an author. In my last few years at the firm, I had an uncommonly good work-life balance for Wall Street, logging only about fifty hours a week. In the midst of the rejections and self-doubt in the years leading up to the book deals, I was grateful for my Wall Street job. In my first job at Goldman, I'd been the only woman investor on my NYC team of twenty men.
When the going gets tough, PE gets going. Insider's Casey Sullivan and Rebecca Ungarino examined one segment of Wall Street that is primed to take off despite an economy that has left almost everyone hurting. The big question is where will PE firms look to deploy capital. How long PE firms resist those types of deals still remains to be seen, though. People who left Wall Street for crypto aren't second guessing themselves.
CNN Business —The cost of a New York City taxi ride is expected to increase by nearly 23% by the end of 2022, marking the first taxi fare increase in a decade, according to a unanimous vote held Tuesday by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. Additionally, the base rate for New York City cabs is expected to rise from $2.50 to $3.00, while rush hour surcharges will increase from $1 to $2.50. Gross income of TLC drivers is projected to increase by 33% due to the newly approved fare increases, which are expected to go into effect shortly before the end of this year. “Raising taxi fare rates and minimum pay for high-volume drivers is the right thing to do for our city. “I think part of it and part of our idea with increasing the taxi fare is that the financial compensation just isn’t there.
Sam Bankman-Fried, founder and CEO of crypto exchange FTX. Amid the implosion of crypto exchange FTX, I'm sure many of you had a similar thought creep into your mind. Audiences will see how the battle in the Texas Legislature over gender-affirming care for trans children is far from a mere partisan philosophical argument or campaign talking point for me. That’s the year a flood of anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced in the Texas Legislature — the majority of which directly targeted trans kids and their families. This year dealt Texas trans families a double blow when state Attorney General Ken Paxton delivered a nonbinding legal opinion that gender-affirming care for children was child abuse — followed by a directive from Gov. We acted quickly as a family, breaking the news of our pending out-of-state move to Noah over an unforgettably sad dinner. Despite it all, Texas is where our hearts reside, no matter how many miles might separate us and how directly damaging Republican rhetoric has been.
