UK net-zero ‘pragmatism’ is an odd way to get real
  + stars: | 2023-08-04 | by ( George Hay | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +7 min
Yet official UK figures do not suggest the way to get real on climate change is to go any slower. Sunak himself has defended Britain’s record on climate and says he cares about reaching its 2050 net-zero target. As such the net cost of net zero may be more like 344 billion pounds over three decades, or perhaps only 0.4% of GDP per year. Policy certainty will meanwhile encourage foreign investors to help pay for Britain’s transition, reducing its exposure to gas price shocks. UK energy secretary Grant Shapps said on Aug. 2 that the government remained “absolutely committed” to hitting its net-zero carbon targets by 2050.

The logo of Swiss bank UBS is seen at its headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland October 25, 2022. UBS was 8th in Refinitiv's global M&A league table in the first half of 2023, down from 6th a year earlier. Steve Pettigrew, who just joined UBS from Bank of America Corp (BAC.N), would be leading software M&A under Braham, according to the sources. Some Credit Suisse technology bankers may lose their jobs as part of the shake-up, while others may be retained or also be promoted, the sources said. Reuters reported on Wednesday that Credit Suisse had initiated broad layoffs in New York.

REUTERS/Neil Hall/File PhotoLONDON, Aug 3 (Reuters) - British bank Barclays (BARC.L) is weighing up whether to move its continental Europe headquarters from Dublin to Paris, in a potential further boon for the French capital as it seeks to expand as a global financial centre after Brexit. Barclays said in an interim earnings filing for its Barclays Bank Ireland business - known internally as Barclays Europe -that it was exploring switching its European Union headquarters in order to "be closer to the balance of operations" of the division on the continent. Any potential move by Barclays would result in a "small number of roles" moving to Paris, the document said, adding initial engagement with regulators and other stakeholders was underway. It would also not impact the group's UK activities, it added, where the bank's global headquarters are in London.

LSEG (London Stock Exchange Group) CEO David Schwimmer speaks during the Reuters NEXT Newsmaker event in New York City, New York, U.S., December 1, 2022. Yet two and a half years after CEO David Schwimmer got the keys, the London Stock Exchange operator is growing revenue and mostly beating its targets. The deal increased LSEG’s exposure to selling data, typically a more predictable source of revenue. Annual subscriber value, a closely watched metric which measures the recurring revenue in LSEG’s data division, rose nearly 7% in the first six months of the year. Schwimmer’s dealmaking is paying off, but the former Goldman Sachs (GS.N) banker has a few more installments to collect.

Coca-Cola bottler bulks up challenged empire

MILAN, Aug 2 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The world’s largest maker of Coca-Cola bottles is growing bigger. Pouncing on Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines, which Coca-Cola (KO.N) itself is selling, is a no-brainer. The $267 billion U.S. drink maker run by James Quincey is offloading its bottling manufacturing around the world to concentrate on its ubiquitous products. At just over 1 times 2022 sales, the price tag looks cheap compared to CCEP’s own nearly 2 times multiple. Klein's UK SPAC deal is more swan song than encore

The northern English county is the home of serial acquirer CorpAcq, led by the brother of “Take That” singer Jason Orange, which Klein’s Churchill Capital Corp VII (CVII.N) special-purpose acquisition company vehicle now hopes to buy. The deal, which values the investor in plumbing to fork-lift leasing groups at $1.6 billion including debt, may struggle to relight the fire of the depressed SPAC sector. Klein’s planned deal comes amid a growing lack of patience by SPAC investors. CorpAcq could yet be magic for SPAC investors. Churchill’s sponsors, including Klein, will waive most of their founder shares, which typically vest when a deal is done.

The announcement was the first time either of the two – who had both been in military positions outside the Rocket Force – were named as the force’s leadership. Beijing gave no reason for the change, making the case yet another example of the lack of transparency in China’s political system. The newly appointed Rocket Force leadership both previously held deputy positions in other parts of the military. The charges were first reported by The Detroit News. Mr. DePerno denied any wrongdoing and said that his efforts “uncovered significant security flaws” in a statement from his lawyer, Paul Stablein. The criminal inquiry in Michigan has largely been overshadowed by developments in Georgia, where a grand jury is weighing charges against Mr. Trump for trying to subvert the election, but both are part of the ongoing reckoning over the conspiracy theories about election machines promoted by Mr. Trump and his allies. The efforts to legitimize the falsehoods and conspiracy theories promoted widely by Mr. Trump and his allies continued long after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and after Mr. Biden took office. In Arizona, such efforts included the discredited election audit of Maricopa County led by Republicans in the state legislature.

Jan Dvorkin had raised and nurtured his adopted son in Moscow for seven years until, one day in May, the Russian authorities notified him they were revoking custody. A woman Mr. Dvorkin knew had filed an official complaint, saying that because he was transgender and gay, he was an unfit parent. When Mr. Dvorkin asked the woman why she had reported him, she told him he had brought it on himself, and “that I could have easily avoided it by staying in the closet.”He managed to find another family to take the boy, who is deaf, so that the child would not be sent to an orphanage. Mr. Dvorkin’s experience underscores the increasingly repressive treatment gay and transgender people are subjected to across Russia — a hardship that seems certain to grow as the government leverages the war in Ukraine as justification for greater restrictions on L.G.B.T.Q.

Mr. Smith is not the first special counsel to investigate Mr. Trump. Mr. Smith, by contrast, faces no such limits given that Mr. Trump is no longer in office. Mr. Mueller said little when faced with a barrage of falsehoods pushed publicly by Mr. Trump and his allies about him and his investigative team. During Mr. Trump’s arraignment in Miami in June, Mr. Smith sat in the gallery, closely watching the proceedings. Some in the courtroom suggested he stared at Mr. Trump for much of the hearing, sizing him up.

Opinion | Is Fear of Crime a Self-Fulfilling Prophecy?
  + stars: | 2023-08-01 | by ( Neil Gross | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
He found that during the year he tracked them, people who had a permit were no less likely to be victims of violent crime than people who didn’t have one. Stolen guns are sometimes trafficked out of state, but more commonly circulate locally, where they may be used to commit additional offenses. As a result, each concealed-carry permit increased the violent crime rate in the neighborhood by about 2 percent. If fear of crime leads more people to get guns, and some of those guns are then stolen, increasing violence and creating more fear, a vicious cycle could ensue. Fear can also make crime more likely by fraying the social and economic fabric.

LONDON, Aug 1 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Aston Martin Lagonda (AML.L) is making a painful transition from cash-guzzler to viable carmaker. A 216 million pound cash call on Monday brings its total capital raised since 2018 to just under 1.8 billion pounds. By this year, Aston Martin will have grown revenue by 13% per annum since 2019, according to Refinitiv data, thanks to new models like the DB12 and higher prices. Aston’s current enterprise value is just under 2 times forecast 2024 sales, a discount to Porsche, and far below Ferrari’s (RACE.MI) more than 8 times multiple. Yet Aston still needs to show it can make an electric vehicle, with the first due in 2025.

CNN —A massive, out-of-control fire burning across both California and Nevada is generating extreme fire behavior, spawning “fire whirls” and creating dangerous conditions for firefighters, authorities said. Firefighters battling the blaze have seen fire whirls – “a vortex of flames and smoke that forms when intense heat and turbulent winds combine, creating a spinning column of fire,” the Mojave National Preserve said Sunday. Crews battlling the York Fire faced "fire whirls" Sunday in the Mojave National Preserve, California. Ty O'Neil/AP“These fire whirls are similar to dust devils but are specifically associated with the heat and energy released by a wildfire,” the Mojave National Preserve said. The struggle to control the York Fire has allowed smoke to reach into Nevada and southern Utah, the fire incident overview noted.

[1/4] Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., claps beside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, after signing ceremonies at the Malacanang Presidential Palace in Manila, Philippines, July 31, 2023.Aaron Favila/POOL via REUTERSMANILA, July 31 (Reuters) - The European Union is ready to strengthen cooperation with the Philippines on maritime security, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said on Monday, as she stressed the importance of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. She was speaking after a meeting with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in Manila where the two leaders discussed a range of issues from security and trade to climate change. "We are ready to strengthen the cooperation with the Philippines on maritime security in the region by sharing information, conducting threat assessment and building the capacity of your coast guard," she said in a joint press conference with Marcos. Von der Leyen on Monday reaffirmed the EU's support for a 2016 international arbitration ruling that invalidated Beijing's expansive claims, saying the ruling is legally binding and provides the basis for resolving disputes peacefully. Von der Leyen also said the European Union will support the Philippines' fight against climate change, which is a priority for Marcos as he pushes to increase renewables in the country's power mix to 35% by 2030.

“Pee-wee’s Playhouse” stands as one of the oddest, most audacious, most unclassifiable shows in television history. In one episode, Pee-wee married a fruit salad. Goldman Sachs thinks Chevron is on the verge of a breakout. The firm upgraded shares of the oil giant to buy from neutral Monday and raised its price target to $187 from $166 per share. Chevron has struggled this year, slipping 11.5%, while the S & P 500 is up 19% in that time. But analyst Neil Mehta thinks now is the time to buy into the energy giant, Chevron now has a clear path to generating positive free-cash-flow in 2025 and 2026 and trades at a relatively cheap valuation. The analyst also said Chevron is trading at a more compelling valuation relative to peers.

MANILA, July 31 (Reuters) - The Philippines' finance minister said monetary authorities have room to pause on rate hikes in August despite a recent policy tightening by the U.S. Federal Reserve. That is my view and we have to monitor other indicators like inflation," Finance Secretary Benjamin Diokno told reporters on Friday during his weekly media briefing. The Monetary Board has four current members, including the central bank governor, but three seats are still vacant. Inflation is expected to return to within the central bank's 2% to 4% target range in the fourth quarter, Diokno said. Former President Donald J. Trump lashed out at Republicans in Congress while campaigning in Pennsylvania on Saturday, threatening members of his party who do not share his appetite for pursuing corruption investigations against President Biden and his family — and for retribution. In a litany of grievances about his deepening legal woes and the direction of the country, the twice-indicted former president cast G.O.P. “You’ve got to get a little bit lower class.”And then Mr. Trump, the overwhelming front-runner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, put party members on notice. “Any Republican that doesn’t act on Democratic fraud should be immediately primaried,” said Mr. Trump, to the roaring approval of several thousand supporters at the Erie Insurance Arena. Throughout the night he referenced the case against Hunter Biden and accused the president of complicity in his son’s troubles.
