Capital allocation, for example, is a skill that poker can help to improve, because allocating chips in a poker game is a form of capital allocation. That seat at the table imbalance is one where the world of poker replicates the world of business. Just cited an estimate of over 100 million people in the world playing poker today, and less than 10% of those players being women. "That poker table has a forcefield around it," she said, and it "feels an awful lot like the meeting room. Poker, ultimately, is about more than making money — each lesson is focused on a higher-level mission.

America’s housing dream is broken
  + stars: | 2022-11-03 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
New York CNN Business —A little over a decade ago, the dominant narrative about the housing market was that Millennials simply weren’t buying. As that 2020 housing boom begins to go bust, those who managed to close on a home in the crush of competition fed by rock-bottom mortgage rates should count themselves extremely lucky. “And this year were facing increasing home prices while mortgage rates are also climbing.”Oh yeah, one other thing: In addition to mortgage rates going up, home prices also shot up, with the median peaking at $413,800 in June. As affordability reaches crisis levels, now is a good time for federal and local governments to rethink the way we frame the American Dream. Another strong data point on jobs will only reassure the Fed that the labor market can withstand more rate hikes.
Evellyn Singleton, 23, began working as a nanny for an affluent, Nashville-based family last fall. She watched their son, Jacob, during their vacation in Nantucket and posted about it on TikTok. Jacob's mom told me she was initially drawn to my profile because it really focused on who I was as a person rather than just listing my nanny experience. The family was living in Nantucket, Massachusetts, for the month, but they're based in Nashville during the rest of the year. Courtesy of Evellyn SingletonFlying is definitely part of the job, as Jacob's family enjoys travel.

European fertilizer producers are restarting production across the continent, spurred on by the recent, sharp fall in natural-gas prices, though other energy-intensive industries are taking a wait-and-see approach to their own capacity cuts. Norway’s Yara International ASA, one of the world’s largest fertilizer companies, said that it was now operating at 65% of its European ammonia capacity—having slashed output to just over a third of its total capacity for much of the second half of this year. Commodity research firm CRU International Ltd. said Yara’s moves are in line with other producers. Overall, European fertilizer output is now at about 63% of total capacity, having previously stood at around 37% at the start of October, CRU said.
LONDON— BP PLC reported robust underlying profit for the third quarter and said it would buy back another $2.5 billion of shares, as a strong performance in natural-gas trading offset weaker refining margins. London-based BP said Tuesday its underlying replacement-cost profit, a metric similar to the net income that U.S. oil companies report, was $8.2 billion. That beat the $6.1 billion average projection of 29 analysts compiled by BP and the $3.3 billion it reported a year earlier.
Oprah unveiled her annual list of Favorite Things this week ahead of the 2022 holiday shopping seasons. Favorite Things started as a holiday segment on Oprah's show in the 1990s and is now a highly anticipated event. You'd need $11,964 to buy all 102 items on the list, with an average price of $117 per gift. Just 31 of the items are under $50, and only a meager dozen clock in under $25. If you're looking to shop Oprah's Favorite Things without breaking the bank, we've rounded up all the items priced under $40.
Gilman Hill Asset Management CEO Jenny Harrington says a top trade is New York Community Bancorp . The bank said Friday it got approval from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency to merge with Flagstar under the Flagstar name with a waiting period of 15 days. The Federal Reserve Board must still approve the deal. "Just last week … they finally said that they got OCC approval for the merger with Flagstar," she said on CNBC's "Halftime Report." "They're now extending that merger until December 31 waiting for FRB approval, but it sounds like it's finally going smoothly."

AS A KID, Mike White had weird interests. That makes a lot of sense if you consider “The White Lotus,” the Emmy-winning HBO series he created: Its first season also involved quirky characters and disastrous turns of events in a glamorous setting, namely Maui. Promising the same heady cocktail, season 2, which premieres Oct. 30, unfolds in Sicily at San Domenico Palace, Taormina, a Four Seasons Hotel. “In Taormina, you see villas on terraced hills, Mount Etna and the Ionian Sea,” said Mr. White, 52. Mr. White brought his penchant for traveling, and troubleshooting, to his role as a director and showrunner, too, opting to film both seasons of “The White Lotus” on location.

TotalEnergies’ decision to retain business in Russia has come at a cost, but the company has been among the biggest beneficiaries of higher energy prices. French oil giant TotalEnergies SE has booked a new $3.1 billion accounting charge linked to its Russian assets, taking its total Russia-related impairments to nearly $11 billion this year, among the highest out of Western companies. The Paris-based company was originally defiant about maintaining business ties in Russia, in contrast with rivals including BP PLC , Shell PLC and Exxon Mobil Corp., which quickly plotted their exits following Moscow’s February invasion of Ukraine.
LONDON— Shell PLC said it plans to boost its dividend and buy back another $4 billion of its shares in the coming months, as the oil major continued to benefit from strong demand for natural gas in difficult-to-navigate markets. Shell on Thursday reported a higher third-quarter profit compared with the same period a year ago, even as price volatility in energy markets took a bite out of earnings in its core natural-gas trading business. Earlier this month, the company had warned that natural-gas price swings and lower margins from fuel-refining would cut into its third-quarter earnings.
