Users on social media had been complaining that the AI tool generates images of historical figures — like the U.S. Google said in a post on X on Wednesday that the AI feature can "generate a wide range of people. The image generator tool was launched at the start of February through Gemini, which was formerly called Bard. Gemini refused to generate any images at all on Thursday morning when tested by a CNBC reporter.

Homelessness is highest in cities with exorbitant rents, but small cities and rural communities are not shielded from the housing crisis. Because rural America lacks many social services, like free clinics, soup kitchens and shelters, the rural homeless often make their way to places like the Water Street Mission. We spoke with several people staying at the Water Street Mission, some of whom were there for the first time and some who had sought refuge there many times before. Levon Higgins, 50, has been staying at Water Street for the last six months : I just couldn’t afford to live where I was. Mounting inflation and interest rates have put significant pressure on several sectors — especially real estate. He suggests that investors look to have 10% of their portfolio exposed to "real estate in some form, as a good rule of thumb." "That exposure can come from REITs [real estate investment trusts] or direct ownership, or other real estate investments if you are a large investor. Rick Romano, Head of Global Real Estate Securities at PGIM Real Estate, agrees, saying that REITs offer investors "a unique and fantastic" opportunity to invest across geographies and segments right now. With Judge Juan Merchan’s proclamation last week that jury selection in the Manhattan prosecution of Donald Trump will begin on March 25, it is time for a reappraisal of the case. Mr. Bragg will face tough challenges ahead, fueled by lingering skepticism that critics have harbored about the strength of the evidence and whether Mr. Trump has been unfairly targeted. To understand why this case matters, think about a precedent — an earlier episode of an election-related felony and its cover-up. That was the Watergate scandal, which hung over Richard Nixon’s re-election campaign in 1972. Because the investigation was unresolved, Mr. Nixon’s nefarious conduct worked — he was in the White House when the full revelations came out later, to devastating effect.

Broadway’s Crunchtime Is Also Its Best Life

Broadway is the pinnacle of the commercial theater, a billion-dollar cultural enterprise and a jewel of New York City. So why is it run like a Christmas tree farm? I don’t mean that it invites too much tinsel. I mean that it operates at a very low hum for 10 months of the year and then goes into a two-month frenzy of product dumping. From a business standpoint, this is obviously unwise.

A better way to handle layoffs
  + stars: | 2024-02-20 | by ( Aki Ito | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +11 min
Out of everything that happens in the workplace, nothing underscores the harshly transactional nature of employment more than the way companies terminate their employees. To be sure, there are times when layoffs are necessary for the health — and even survival — of a company. In other words, the pitiless and coldhearted way businesses handle dismissals isn't just destructive to those who get dismissed. Is there a better way to handle layoffs? For starters, Herd says, managers should look the employees they're dismissing in the eye, rather than reading from a script.

It's a tall order for Haley as South Carolina prepares to vote on Saturday. Trump's 2016 primary win helped cement his front-runner status, and he boasts support from all of the state's top elected leaders and all but one of its congressional Republicans. “We should make sure we tell our partners it’s in their best interest to hold their own weight," Haley said Sunday. In 1958, when Mary Pat Laffey Inman became a stewardess — as they were then called — for Northwest Airlines, she was 20 years old and the clock was already ticking. That is, if she didn’t marry, get pregnant or even gain too much weight before that: All were grounds for termination. Six years later, President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act, outlawing discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin, and female flight attendants began to join forces against sexism. It also set the precedent for nondiscriminatory hiring of flight attendants across the industry. But even then, not everything changed: Flight attendants on some airlines were still subjected to “weigh-ins” into the 1990s.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) — Astronomers have discovered what may be the brightest object in the universe, a quasar with a black hole at its heart growing so fast that it swallows the equivalent of a sun a day. The record-breaking quasar shines 500 trillion times brighter than our sun. The black hole powering this distant quasar is more than 17 billion times more immense than our sun, an Australian-led team reported Monday in the journal Nature Astronomy. The rotating disk around the quasar's black hole — the luminous swirling gas and other matter from gobbled-up stars — is like a cosmic hurricane. Further analysis shows the mass of the black hole to be 17 to 19 billion times that of our sun, according to the team.

Most of my co-workers had been at the store for years, but almost all of them were, like me, part time. This meant that the store had no obligation to give us a stable number of hours or to adhere to a weekly minimum. The unpredictability of the hours made life difficult for my co-workers — as much as, if not more than, the low pay did. On receiving a paycheck for a good week’s work, when they’d worked 39 hours, should they use the money to pay down debt? Or should they hold on to it in case the following week they were scheduled for only four hours and didn’t have enough for food?

It was clear that the war could significantly damage the Kenyan economy, as the country is almost entirely dependent on imports for its conventional fuel supply. But the extent of the damage caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine to Kenya's economy is now clearer than ever. Kalya Kiptiony, investment analystFuel is Kenya's economic lifebloodAfter the start of the war, the price of fuel in Kenya rose, on average, 7.6% every month. Although Kenya gets most of its oil from the Gulf, Russia's invasion of Ukraine led to a spike in fuel prices worldwide. In a report late last year, the UN described just how factors like drought, inflation, and fuel and food price rises are combining to undermine livelihoods in Kenya.
