Israel’s Attorney General on Thursday told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to reevaluate the tenure of his far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, citing his alleged interference in police matters. Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara sent a letter to Netanyahu in which she described instances when Ben-Gvir, who is tasked with setting general policy, apparently gave operational instructions that threaten the police’s apolitical status. There was no immediate comment from Netanyahu’s office. Ben-Gvir, who heads a small ultra-nationalist party in Netanyahu’s coalition, wrote on social media: “The attempted coup by (the Attorney General) has begun. The only dismissal that needs to happen is that of the Attorney General.”

Months of U.S. efforts to broker a deal between Washington’s ally Israel and Hezbollah have so far failed. In another potentially promising sign, a senior Lebanese official signalled that Hezbollah would pull its forces away from the Lebanese-Israeli border under a ceasefire. Its terms require Hezbollah to remove fighters and weapons from areas between the border and the Litani River, which runs about 20 miles from Lebanon’s southern border. After 2006, Israel complained Hezbollah fighters and weapons remained in the border are while Lebanon accused Israel of violating the resolution by sending warplanes into its airspace. Hezbollah attacks have killed about 100 civilians and soldiers in northern Israel, the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and southern Lebanon over the last year, according to Israel.

HONG KONG — Hong Kong’s high court on Thursday sentenced a man to 23 years and 10 months in prison for being the mastermind of an alleged plot to attack police with explosives during the city’s pro-democracy and anti-China protests in 2019. Another defendant, Wong Chun-keung, the leader of a group known as the “Dragon Slayers” that was active during the 2019 protests, was sentenced to 13 years and six months imprisonment. The long jail terms come amid a protracted national security clampdown by China in the global financial hub, and is the first time the U.N. anti-terrorism ordinance has been used in Hong Kong since 2002. He was convicted of an alternative charge of conspiring to cause explosions that were likely to endanger life or cause significant property damage. The ruling came less than a week before 45 of Hong Kong’s leading democrats face sentencing in a separate national security case for an alleged subversive plot from 2020.

But rather than one of the more obvious outdoor wellness and adventure hubs, it’s actually Taiwan. “Several factors have contributed to the rapid growth of outdoor sports in Taiwan,” says Kate Chen of the Taiwan Tourism Administration. “There was a huge spike in young adults wanting to go hiking or cycling.”But it’s not just locals discovering the island’s outdoor opportunities. Floating in the South China Sea between Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, Dongsha Marine National Park offers an entirely different take on outdoor adventure. They also provide a venue for more than 100 nature trails that are part of a national trails network created in 2002.

The monkey, named Jorgie Boy, was taken from his owner, Brandi Botello, on Saturday morning after Dallas police officers responded to a single-vehicle accident. Botello told NBC Dallas-Fort Worth that she was charged with DWI but maintained that she was not driving. Botello told the station that the driver was a male acquaintance and that he was charged with public intoxication. Because Botello lives in Irving, a neighboring suburb, the monkey was transferred to Irving's animal control department, Dallas police said. The sanctuary's owner said the monkey would not be returned to its previous owner, the Morning News reported.

President-elect Donald Trump said Thursday he will nominate Todd Blanche, one of his criminal defense lawyers, to be deputy attorney general. The statement noted that Blanche has experience working for the Justice Department — something former Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Trump's choice for attorney general, does not have. Blanche was Trump's lead lawyer when he stood trial on charges of falsifying business records related to a hush money payment this year. If Blanche's nomination is confirmed before Gaetz's, he could serve as acting attorney general while Gaetz goes through the process. He will also nominate D. John Sauer, who argued Trump's successful immunity case before the Supreme Court, for solicitor general.

Trump has threatened to hit China with at least 60% tariffs and vowed to end reliance on the country. It would force companies to scramble to find other sources of supply, American consumers to pay higher prices at the store, and, according to many experts, lead to job losses. "If they are interpreted in that way, China might have a much more vigorous response, not limited to tariffs." Those actions could range from economic changes to matters of diplomacy and security, Kennedy said, adding China may "push back as hard as they can." More combative relations between the U.S. and China also brings the risk of public backlash amid rising Chinese nationalism.
