The Mankato West Scarlets, who had started the 1999 high school football season with a miserable record of 2-4, had improbably swaggered into a state championship game. Their defense, though, would first have to repel the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets, who were from north of Minneapolis and trailed by a single touchdown. But inside the 10-yard line, a Scarlet defender intercepted the ball, effectively clinching a 35-28 victory and Mankato West’s first championship. A coach lifted Tim Walz, then the defensive coordinator and now the Democratic candidate for vice president, skyward. In Mr. Walz’s telling, the victory also eventually proved a launchpad for politics.

CNN —Turkey’s understated Olympian Yusuf Dikeç went viral for his nonchalant stance while competing in the air pistol mixed team competition event last week. Now, it appears Dikeç’s “insane aura” has inspired a new celebration that has spread across this year’s Games. With the eyes of the world watching his celebrations, Duplantis appeared to mimic Dikeç’s cold stance – hand in a make-shift pocket and an outstretched arm holding an imaginary gun. “Congratulations Duplantis,” Dikeç wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter, on Monday, alongside a photo of Duplantis’ celebration. Dikeç has shared images of athletes copying his stance on his social media platforms, which have garnered many more followers since he competed in Paris.

As the final bell rang and Mr. Khyzhniak’s hand was raised, Mr. Litvinov said he was lifted by a surge of pride. “Pride for the nation, for our athletes,” said Mr. Litvinov, a 48-year-old resident of Kyiv. CNN —Members of the grand jury in Arizona that indicted 18 allies of Donald Trump earlier this year for their alleged roles in attempting to overturn the 2020 election had also expressed interest in charging the former president, according to a new court filing. The interest was strong enough that it prompted the state’s lead prosecutor to request that the grand jury not indict the former president and give a PowerPoint presentation to explain his reasoning. Prosecutors cited two primary reasons for why the grand jury should not charge Trump: a lack of evidence and a US Justice Department policy they believe would hamper charges against a former president. The policy cited by prosecutors deals with DOJ guidelines limiting how the federal government can prosecute individuals already charged with similar crimes at the state level. That’s why you do not see that,” the state prosecutor told the grand jury.

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump participates in a question-and-answer session at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago, July 31, 2024. An Arizona grand jury that indicted 18 allies of former President Donald Trump on criminal charges related to trying to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state was interested in indicting Trump as well, but was asked not to do so by the state attorney general's office, according to a new court filing. Attorney General Kristin Mayes' office disclosed the grand jury's interest in charging Trump in a filing that disputed a claim by many of the defendants that the office was politically biased in prosecuting them in the so-called fake electors case. "The State Grand Jury was told by the Attorney General's Office on multiple occasions that it had the discretion to indict no one," the office wrote. Violence broke out in several towns and cities across the country after three young girls were killed in a knife attack at a Taylor Swift-themed dance party in the seaside town of Southport in northwest England last week. Amid false rumors that the suspect was a Muslim asylum seeker, mobs have since attacked hotels housing asylum seekers, as well as mosques, leading to hundreds of arrests. The suspect Axel Rudakubana, 17, was born in the Welsh capital of Cardiff and had lived for years in a village near Southport itself, police saidMusk's remarks were quickly rebuffed by Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office, which said in a statement that such comments had “no justification.”In a separate video message posted to X, Starmer said: “Whatever the apparent motivation, this is not protest. This month, he said he was pulling his businesses out of California to protest a new state law that bars schools from requiring that trans kids be outed to their parents. Myanmar’s junta has lost communications with senior officers at a major military base near the Chinese border, in a rare admission of battlefield failure after rebels announced they had taken control of the key regional army headquarters. Junta troops have been unable to contact an undisclosed number of officers at the besieged northeastern regional command, military spokesman Zaw Min Tun said Monday, following weeks of intense fighting in and around the town. “The rapid fall of the Myanmar army’s Northeastern Command makes it fully clear to the ranks of the resistance and to neighboring countries just how weak the Myanmar military has become,” said Jason Tower at the United States Institute of Peace. “For Min Aung Hlaing, the implications are existential,” he said, referring to the embattled junta chief. “We will also continue to fight as allies until the military falls,” said the statement from the Kachin, Karen and Chin groups.

SEOUL, South Korea — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the delivery of 250 new tactical ballistic missile launchers to front-line troops, state media KCNA reported on Monday, which Seoul said could be used to threaten South Korea. The launchers have been described by state media as a modern tactical attack weapon personally designed by Kim and ready to be transferred to Korean People’s Army units on the border with the South. North Korea said it test-fired a new tactical ballistic missile last month. In a speech, Kim blamed the United States for creating a “nuclear-based military bloc” that forced his country to further strengthen military capabilities. A spokesperson for Seoul’s unification ministry handling inter-Korean affairs said North Korea’s illegal nuclear and missile programs were the primary threat to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.
