Read previewSen. JD Vance of Ohio said that a lawyer presumably sent by the Trump campaign asked him if he had any "secret family" during the vice presidential vetting process in an interview that took place with his wife, Usha Vance, sitting near him. The lawyer, Vance said, then asked, "Do you have any secret family?" AdvertisementWhile little is often made public about vice presidential vetting, politicians who have gone through it have often described it as cumbersome and intrusive. Would-be vice presidential nominees are asked to turn over copies of every public statement they have made along with bank records. Another example is former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, the 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee.

However, after EzDubs went through the Y Combinator startup program last year, the company made a quick pivot, adding Microsoft's cloud into the mix. That's because EzDubs' founders learned of a partnership that enabled Y Combinator companies to receive $350,000 worth of credits on Microsoft Azure. The current offer includes $350,000 in AWS credits, plus $300,000 reserved for tapping the custom silicon, the spokesperson said. A spokesperson later said 58% of Y Combinator startups had taken up Microsoft's credit offer, a figure that doesn't reflect actual Azure usage. "Leading AI startups use OpenAI to power their AI solutions, therefore, making them Azure customers as well."

Josh Shapiro, Democrat of Pennsylvania, wrote in his college newspaper three decades ago that Palestinians were “too battle-minded” to achieve a two-state solution in the Middle East, prompting criticism as Vice President Kamala Harris considers him to be her running mate. Mr. Shapiro, 51, has embraced his Jewish identity and been one of the Democratic Party’s staunchest defenders of Israel at a moment when the party is splintered over the war in Gaza. But he says his views have evolved since publishing an opinion essay as a college student at the University of Rochester in New York, when he wrote that Palestinians were incapable of establishing their own homeland and making it successful, even with help from Israel and the United States. “They are too battle-minded to be able to establish a peaceful homeland of their own,” he wrote in the essay, published in the Sept. 23, 1993, edition of The Campus Times, the student newspaper. “They will grow tired of fighting amongst themselves and will turn outside against Israel.”

Biles' post on the social media platform X seemed to reference Trump's recent controversial comments that immigrants are "taking Black jobs." The Republican presidential nominee had said, "They're taking Black jobs now and it could be 18, it could be 19 and even 20 million people," during his June 27 debate against President Joe Biden. "They're taking Black jobs, and they're taking Hispanic jobs, and you haven't seen it yet, but you're going to see something that's going to be the worst in our history," Trump said. Data does not support Trump's claim that immigrants are "taking" jobs from American workers. With nine Olympic medals, six of them gold, Biles is the most decorated U.S. gymnast in history.

In late 2020, a news start-up began pitching investors on a bold vision: By creating content native to social media for Gen Z audiences — and later acquiring brands like The Daily Mail — the company would begin to create “the Amazon of News” within five years. “We must create a movement,” read a pitch deck for the company viewed by The New York Times. “A movement hungry for the facts and thirsty for the truth.”That company, which eventually became known as The News Movement, was co-founded by Will Lewis, a media executive who was named chief executive of The Washington Post last year. In early June, Mr. Lewis announced a new division in the newsroom that would focus in part on “social media journalism” to help turn around its ailing finances. The announcement, made alongside the news that the paper’s executive editor was leaving, ultimately led to internal strife and questions about Mr. Lewis’s leadership and ethics.

Pelosi said online meetings are more structured than a coffee chat or desk-side discussions in the office. Fed Will Scour Jobs Report for Signs of Weakness

Federal Reserve officials held off on cutting interest rates this week because they want slightly more data to feel confident that inflation is truly coming under control. But while that approach is cautious when it comes to price increases, it could prove to be risky when it comes to the labor market. High Fed interest rates help to cool inflation by slowing demand in the economy. And as inflation comes down, Fed policymakers are increasingly attuned to the risk that they might overdo it, tipping the economy into a severe enough slowdown that it pushes unemployment higher and leaves Americans out of work. Those concerns were not enough to prod central bankers to cut interest rates at their meeting this week.

For the 16 people released from Russian captivity on Thursday in a landmark prisoner swap, the exchange brought a moment of momentous relief. Hundreds of prisoners in Russia — including Americans and prominent Russian political activists, journalists and artists — are still waiting, hoping that another diplomatic agreement or turn of events might secure their release. One of them is Marc Fogel, an American history teacher who worked for almost a decade at the Anglo-American school in Moscow. In 2021, when trying to enter Russia, Mr. Fogel was arrested and accused of smuggling drugs after a small amount of medical marijuana was discovered in his luggage. In June 2022, Mr. Fogel, a native of Western Pennsylvania, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for drug smuggling.

Now, the broader conservative movement is trying to figure out what it means for a potential second Trump administration. “Since the Fall of 2023, President Trump’s campaign made it clear that only President Trump and the campaign, and NOT any other organization or former staff, represent policies for the second term,” Alvarez said in a statement. Still, staffing the administration could be a major place where Project 2025’s work plays into a Trump administration, even if the Trump campaign swatted the effort aside. “If Trump is re-elected, as we hope he will be, there will be thousands of appointments,” said Steven Groves, who helped put together the Project 2025 policy book. The carmaker is also attempting to fix a spate of bad publicity surrounding its CEO, Elon Musk — all with little in the way of advertising initiatives or traditional sales strategies. The electric-car maker made its mark by breaking industry standards with its ad-free, direct-to-consumer sales model.
