Companies TC Energy Corp FollowJuly 28 (Reuters) - Shares of TC Energy (TRP.TO) fell nearly 5% on Friday after the Keystone pipeline operator said it would spin off its liquids business to focus on transporting natural gas. But TD Securities downgraded TC to "hold" from "buy", saying it was skeptical the spinoff would create value. TC CEO Francois Poirier said TC needed to sell another C$3 billion in assets during the next 18 months to reach its 4.75 times debt to EBITDA target. TC had 5.4 times debt to EBITDA last year and is aiming to reduce that to 5 times this year. TC's Keystone pipeline in December spilled more than 14,000 barrels of oil in Kansas.

AstraZeneca's chief financial officer on Friday said that geopolitical tensions are not impacting the company's China operations, following a report that the pharma giant is considering spinning off its business in the country. So I think we're just in a very unique space and we don't really see geopolitics playing a role in doing business in China," Aradhana Sarin told CNBC's "Squawk Box Europe." The Financial Times reported on June 18 that AstraZeneca had drawn up plans to spin off its China business and potentially list it in Hong Kong, in order to shield it from China's strained relationship with the U.S. and Europe. "China has actually been a great business for us," Sarin said, observing that the company's China branch had recorded four successive quarters of growth. The company's China revenues expanded by 7%, slightly above the 6% recorded in Europe, but below the 10% growth in the U.S., including Covid-related figures.

Maxwell Social is New York City's latest social club with a spin: You have to cook your own food. It's a cool social club — where members are supposed to cook their own meals and provide their own liquor. From New York City Mayor Eric Adams visiting the private Zero Bond social club to TikToks poking fun of Soho House, people love — either going to or making fun of — these exclusive clubs. But Maxwell Social, the newest edition to the long list of New York City social clubs, is trying to buck this reputation with its own spin. Here, members can cook their own food and pour their own drinks.

It’s an important point that you can also find in the College Board’s Advanced Placement class in African American Studies. “In addition to agricultural work, enslaved people learned specialized trades and worked as painters, carpenters, tailors, musicians and healers in the North and South,” the A.P. “Once free, African Americans used these skills to provide for themselves and others.”Similar points, yes, but the language isn’t quite the same. To say that any more than a fortunate few could “parlay” their skills into anything that might improve their lives is to spin a fiction. For them, there was no point after slavery where they could use their skills.

For all the blame Facebook has received for fostering extreme political polarization on its ubiquitous apps, new research suggests that the problem may not strictly be a function of the algorithm. Doing so during the three-month period, "did not significantly alter levels of issue polarization, affective polarization, political knowledge, or other key attitudes," the authors wrote. When altering the kind of content these Facebook users were receiving to presumably make it more diverse, they found that the change didn't alter users' views. "However, the data clearly indicate that Facebook users are much more likely to see content from like-minded sources than they are to see content from cross-cutting sources." The polarization problem exists on Facebook, the researchers all agree, but the question is whether the algorithm is intensifying the matter.

This company has a knack for magnificent vistas. Its new home is high above the Hudson River in Garrison, N.Y., with breathtaking views. Picnicking, should you care to, is very much part of the preshow experience, and performances are alfresco, under a sturdy, festive, big white tent. But productions here often use the landscape just outside for striking tableaus, with the tent’s wide, arced entrance framing bits of action on the sloping lawn. (hvshakespeare.org)

GSK reckons the spin-off has allowed the company to sharpen its focus on vaccines and infectious diseases and with $7 billion generated by the Haleon spin-off, it can fund deals to bolster a lacklustre drug pipeline. The company also reported an adjusted profit of 38.8 pence per share for the quarter, on sales of about 7.18 billion pounds ($9.26 billion). Analysts were expecting a profit of 34.7 pence per share on sales of about 6.77 billion pounds, according to company-compiled consensus estimates. Sales of Shingrix, the company's top-selling drug, generated 880 million pounds, beating analyst estimates of 872 million pounds. Sales of HIV treatments generated 1.58 billion in the quarter, ahead of the company-compiled consensus of about 1.5 billion pounds in the quarter.

The Federal Reserve has made three big mistakes since inflation took off in 2021, according to UBS. "Today's rate hike will probably have to be reversed in a relatively short space of time," UBS said. Today's additional rate hike from the Fed gets to the root of what has went wrong. These are the three big mistakes made by the Fed over the past two years, and how it will impact the economy, according to UBS. "A sensible recognition of the declining quality of economic data would have stopped the blind hike, hike, hike strategy."

Unanswered questions about official decision-making are standard in China, where the political system is notoriously opaque and has only become more so under Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Twenty years ago, Paris-based fashion designer François Yameogo returned to his native Burkina Faso to build a facility specialising in making Faso Danfani, the country's traditional fabric, for use in his signature indigo sport coats. This keeps domestic fabric prices artificially low, deters investment in modern technology and exacerbates poverty, according to the United Nations food agency. CNN —For any Republican presidential candidate not named Donald Trump, making the first primary debate on August 23 in Milwaukee is an essential obstacle to overcome. The Republican National Committee set minimum viability requirements that numerous candidates are having trouble meeting.
