REUTERS/Leah Millis/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Oct 26 (Reuters) - Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese met the new speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday and said he hoped the U.S. Congress would pass legislation related to the AUKUS submarine project this year. "We, of course, have important legislation required for AUKUS," Albanese told Johnson at the start of their meeting. "We are certainly hoping that the Congress can pass that legislation this year." Budget wrangling and the lack of a speaker for several weeks until Johnson's appointment interrupted the U.S. legislative process in Congress, and Australian officials have expressed concern about delays in approving legislation needed to move the AUKUS project forward. WASHINGTON (AP) — Republican Mike Johnson is the new speaker of the House, but the ally of Donald Trump inherits many of the same political problems that have tormented past GOP leaders, tested their grasp of the gavel and eventually chased them out of office. But the goodwill toward Johnson blurs the political fault lines challenging the Louisianan's ability to lead the GOP majority as it faces daunting issues ahead. While not the party's top choice for the gavel, the deeply religious and even-keeled Johnson has few foes and an important GOP backer: Trump. In the House, far-right members had refused to accept a more traditional speaker, and moderate conservatives didn't want a hard-liner. A lawyer specializing in constitutional issues, Johnson had rallied Republicans around Trump’s legal effort to overturn the 2020 election results.

After three weeks of infighting, division and tensions that left the House paralyzed they will again attempt to elect a speaker this afternoon. Members can also opt to vote PRESENT, which casts no vote. Additionally, Massie this morning said he would support Johnson after voting present last night. Remember, the math is tricky here: The prevailing candidate will be the one who wins 50% +1 of the total number of the House voting for a person. Should a member not vote or vote present, that will drop the target number that a candidate needs to reach.

Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio was removed as GOP nominee for speaker in a secret ballot after he lost his third bid. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the previous speaker, was ousted three weeks ago. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was chosen as House Republicans’ latest nominee for speaker in a conference vote late Tuesday, hours after the party elected and then derailed a different member in its search for the elusive candidate who can actually win the gavel. At the end of a marathon day of internal debate and votes, Johnson, the vice chairman of the House Republican conference, bested Byron Donalds of Florida, a Trump ally popular with many of the House’s most conservative lawmakers. In a shift, lawmakers left the Capitol on Tuesday night optimistic that Johnson could unite them after a series of failed attempts to find a successor to former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.), who was ousted three weeks ago.

WASHINGTON—In choosing Mike Johnson as the new House Speaker, Republicans have cast their lot with a little-known congressman from Louisiana who has made his name pushing conservative positions on cultural issues and who played a key role in unsuccessful legal efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. After 22 days without a speaker, House Republicans came together to elect Johnson for the post Wednesday after three other better-known nominees failed to unite the fractured conference.

Photo: Chip Somodevilla/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—The House elected GOP Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana as speaker, elevating a staunch conservative to the top post after three weeks of Republican infighting doomed other candidates aiming to succeed ousted leader Kevin McCarthy. The choice of Johnson, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, came after the party cycled through a series of hopefuls, prompting some members to wonder whether any colleague could thread the needle in the deeply divided conference. With a speaker now in place, lawmakers can finally get back to work, with many eager to pass aid for Israel and address a looming government-funding deadline next month.

This week, he compared himself to a South African Nobel Peace Prize winner who served time in prison for his battles against apartheid. All that flailing around over selecting a House speaker was due, in part, to the Republicans’ failure to corral their Flimsy Five around any of the original contenders. “I have many wonderful friends wanting to be Speaker of the House, and some are truly great Warriors,” Trump declaimed. Mike Johnson of Louisiana, who finally won the speaker’s job, is exactly the kind of guy you’d expect to come up on top. Right-wing anti-abortion activist who gets along with his colleagues and who, crucially, has items in his résumé that won Trump’s heart.

In some states, higher-income families can now use taxpayer money to cover private school tuition -- and more people than projected are taking the offer, which might force scrambles to shore up state budgets. It's especially an issue in states like Arizona and Iowa, where at least some families whose children were already in private school can now take advantage of public funding. Her state has a new education savings account program — which is paying for students from families of any income to switch from public to private school and for many already in private school to remain there. Opponents of the programs are bracing for lawmakers to attempt to make up for the higher costs by further cutting public school funding, even though lawmakers have not publicly threatened to do so. The plans are in doubt because of opposition from Democrats and some Republicans who live in rural areas where private schools are scarce and public schools are some of the most important institutions.

House Republicans unanimously voted to elect Rep. Mike Johnson as speaker on Wednesday in a stunning turnaround that came more than three weeks into a standoff that descended the chamber into a crisis of its own creation. Johnson, an unlikely candidate for speaker just weeks ago, was elected in 2016 and serves as the vice chairman of the House GOP conference. And by the evening, lawmakers spoke of a Johnson speakership as if it were all-but guaranteed. House Republicans sprung to their feet as House GOP Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik nominated Johnson for the speakership ahead of the vote on Wednesday, delivering a standing ovation as chants of “Mike” rang out. “Today is the day that House Republicans will humbly look in our hearts and elect Mike Johnson as speaker of the people’s House,” Stefanik said.

U.S. Republican Representative from California Kevin McCarthy speaks with Republican Representative from Ohio Jim Jordan as the U.S. House of Representatives continues voting for new speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, DC, January 4, 2023. Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., is floating a plan that would reinstall him as House speaker and make conservative Trump ally Rep. Jim Jordan the assistant speaker, according to three sources familiar with the matter. The proposed alliance aims to unite warring factions of the House Republican Conference, which has been leaderless since McCarthy was ejected from the speaker's office. A source briefed on the proposal likened it to the arrangement Democrats had when Rep. Nancy Pelosi was speaker and Rep. Katherine Clark was assistant speaker. "Kevin speaker, Jordan assistant speaker," the source said.

U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) leaves a House Republican conference meeting in the Longworth House Office Building on Capitol Hill on Oct. 24, 2023 in Washington, DC. Rep. Mike Johnson, a relatively little-known Louisiana Republican and low-ranking member of the GOP leadership team, became the party's latest nominee for House speaker on Tuesday night after three other hopefuls fizzled out. It remains unclear if he can garner the 217 Republican votes — a simple majority of the full House — needed to win the coveted gavel. Johnson is seeking to achieve something that the last three nominees failed to do: win at least 217 of the 221 Republican votes needed to become speaker. Another wild card in the speaker's race is Trump, who knifed Emmer on Tuesday after he won the nomination.

An ABC News reporter tried to ask GOP Rep. Mike Johnson about his efforts to overturn the 2020 election. In the end, 125 House Republicans, including then-House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, signed on to the Supreme Court brief. While House Republicans failed to overturn the results, 139 lawmakers voted to uphold challenges to at least one state. While a majority of House Republicans voted to object to both states, there were some notable exceptions. Emmer, who was then the leader of House Republicans campaign arm, was briefly the GOP's nominee to become speaker of the House on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, GOP Rep. Mike Johnson became the newest speaker of the House. Now, with new Speaker Mike Johnson at the helm, the party may grapple for some time with how opposite Johnson is from his predecessor. Johnson's sudden rise to becoming speaker comes just over a year before the 2024 election where the Republican Party is aiming to regain control. Neither prediction ultimately came true: Republicans only gained a very slim majority of the House and managed to lose footing in the Senate. Less than two years later, it's now Johnson's responsibility to make sure the Republican Party remains in power.

He attached remarks by Johnson praising Louisiana's abortion ban and penalty of "hard labor for 1-10 years" and fines of $10,000-$100,000 for those who perform abortions. The Biden-Harris campaign and other groups circulated and posted images of three bills Johnson has sponsored that the Democrats said would "ban abortion nationwide." Already, six states – Michigan, California, Vermont, Kentucky, Kansas and Montana – have passed referendums that either enshrined abortion rights or rejected efforts to undo the right to abortion. Another referendum, one that would guarantee abortion rights, is on the ballot next month in Ohio. These numbers have Democrats believing they can keep the White House and flip the House – and Johnson has put a face to that effort.

Republican Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana was elected speaker of the House of Representatives on Wednesday, ending a three-week leadership crisis that has paralyzed Congress. Vice chairman of the House Republican conference and a hard-right conservative, Johnson had maintained a low public profile until he was thrust into the spotlight this week after securing the party's nomination for speaker. Johnson voted against legislation in September that has kept the government running through November, and he has opposed assistance for Ukraine in the past. The Louisiana Republican said earlier this month that the House needs to take all necessary action to help Israel destroy Hamas.
