Having dispatched their speaker then rejected two popular GOP figures as replacements, the House Republicans on Tuesday will be voting instead on a hodge-podge of lesser-known congressmen for speaker, a powerful position second in line to the presidency. No one is expected to emerge from first-round voting and Republicans are planning to stay behind closed doors until they can agree on a nominee. Launched over right-flank complaints about McCarthy's leadership in budget battles, it's no longer clear what the House Republicans are fighting for and if they will end up with a more acceptable speaker. Trump has intervened from the sidelines backing hard-charging Rep. Jim Jordan over Majority Leader Steve Scalise. “You’re gonna have to use persuasion.”Trump, brushing back suggestions that he take the gavel himself, suggested Monday that no one is capable of uniting the House Republicans.

How the ‘uniparty’ myth shut the House down

CNN —Republicans’ House speaker morass continued Tuesday with a little help from former President Donald Trump. Yet another lawmaker with support from most House Republicans – Rep. Tom Emmer of Minnesota, who was picked as their party’s nominee – failed to get the support of nearly all Republicans. What is ‘uniparty?’The term “uniparty” has been a favorite of people like Steve Bannon, the former Trump White House official turned podcaster. “You’ve got a small band of House conservatives who are fighting, really, in a lot of ways, a political guerrilla war against that uniparty,” Gaetz said. The majority of House Republicans backed Emmer, their fourth choice this year to be speaker, in both secret ballot voting and a behind-closed-doors roll call vote.

A Third Speaker Nominee Failed to Unify Republicans

House Republicans voted this afternoon to nominate Tom Emmer — a Representative from Minnesota who holds the No. 3 leadership post — to be the chamber’s next speaker. Emmer is now the third Republican this month to be chosen by his party to become speaker, only to have his bid collapse in a seemingly endless cycle of G.O.P. About two dozen right-wing Republicans quickly indicated that they would not vote for him on the House floor, all but certainly denying the majority he would need. The former president said that it would be a “tragic mistake” if Emmer, who pitched himself as a unity candidate, became speaker, and called him a “Globalist RINO” — short for “Republican in name only.”

House Republicans have elected two nominees for the job since a hard-right clutch of lawmakers toppled Speaker Kevin McCarthy. House Republicans cast aside Mr. Jordan as their nominee for speaker on Friday in a secret-ballot vote, essentially moving to begin the search for a new leader all over again. They are holding an internal election for a new nominee on Tuesday — and if they elect one, Republicans could go to the House floor for a vote later that day. The math can change if there are absences, or if any lawmakers vote “present” rather than in support of a candidate. Tom Emmer for speaker on Tuesday after a series of votes where he edged out the latest slate of candidates eyeing the gavel. 2 House Republican, spelling uncertainty for Emmer’s prospects in a floor vote. As a member of leadership, Emmer had an edge over his opponents in his staff operation. But like those who came before him in the speaker standoff, Emmer is not without his opposition. Emmer voted to certify the 2020 election, he reportedly encouraged House Republicans to distance themselves from Trump in the midterm elections and, like other members of House leadership, he hasn’t endorsed Trump’s 2024 bid.

House Republicans on Tuesday elected Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the No. 3 in the party, as their speaker nominee after five rounds of ballots that pointed to a precarious path forward. Mr. Emmer, 62, has served since January as the party’s whip, responsible for counting and securing the votes to pass the speaker’s agenda. He was the highest-ranking Republican in the race, and has been endorsed by the ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy. Several hard-right conservatives, including a handful who voted to oust Mr. McCarthy, have signaled their support for the Minnesota Republican.

Trump isn't a fan of Tom Emmer, the GOP's latest nominee for speaker of the House. "RINO Tom Emmer, who I do not know well, is not one of them." "Voting for a Globalist RINO like Tom Emmer would be a tragic mistake!"

CNN —Winning a majority party’s nomination for speaker of the House of Representatives usually elevates a lawmaker into the pantheon of American political leaders. But this is about more than the plight of a Republican Party that often looks like it’s tearing itself apart. If the dysfunctional House GOP majority cannot get its act together, the US government could run out of funding before Thanksgiving week – and millions of Americans could pay the price. As former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, himself a notoriously polarizing figure, said on Fox News this weekend: “They got big decisions coming down the road. We don’t have someone who is the speaker of the House to negotiate with the White House, with Senate Democrats who are in the majority.

The sun sets at the U.S. Capitol as House Republican candidates hold a forum before they select the next GOP House Speaker nominee on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S. October 23, 2023. But after three weeks of infighting, some Republicans predicted that a new speaker could be elected on the House floor quickly. 3 House Republican can point to leadership and campaign fundraising experience that normally would make him a strong candidate for the post. The infighting has left the House unable to respond to President Joe Biden's $106 billion request for aid to Israel, Ukraine and U.S. border security. Republicans control the House by a narrow 221-212 margin, which means they can afford no more than four defections on partisan votes.

U.S. Representative Tom Emmer (R-MN) arrives for a House Republican conference meeting to choose a nominee in the race for House Speaker at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, October 24, 2023. Rep. Tom Emmer is the latest Republican nominee for speaker of the House, and that could mean a fresh headache for the nation's largest business lobbying group. Emmer, like former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, is one of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's biggest critics among House Republicans. A lack of engagement with House Republican leadership, particularly the speaker, could mean that the Chamber will have little impact on future legislation. The Chamber has continued to support Republicans despite the criticism the group has received from House Republican leadership.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, a Republican from Minnesota, speaks to members of the media following a House Republican caucus meeting on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC, US, on Monday, Oct. 23, 2023. Emmer, the Republican majority whip, prevailed over a crowded field of eight GOP candidates after several rounds of voting Tuesday morning. Interim Speaker Patrick McHenry has said the nominee could face a vote before the House floor as soon as Tuesday. It is unclear if Emmer can secure the 217 Republican votes needed on the House floor. He can only afford to lose four GOP votes, as Democrats have lined up in lockstep behind their nominee, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York.

The uprising that began nearly three weeks ago with the toppling of Speaker Kevin McCarthy has now weakened three of the most powerful figures in the House GOP. Twisting colored squares together in the right order seems simple by comparison with attempts to unite a House Republican conference unable to comprehend how clownish it looks. “We need (a speaker) because the House can’t do anything without a speaker,” Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky said on CBS’ “Face the Nation” Sunday. “This is probably one of the most embarrassing things I’ve seen because if we don’t have a speaker of the House, we can’t govern. “This is embarrassing for the Republican Party.
