The Alliance for Automotive Innovation said the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) proposal was unreasonable and requested significant revisions. The auto alliance said last month automakers would face more than $14 billion in non-compliance penalties between 2027 and 2032. Automakers also raised alarm at the Energy Department's proposal to significantly revise how it calculates the petroleum-equivalent fuel economy rating for EVs in NHTSA's CAFE program, saying it would "devalue the fuel economy of electric vehicles by 72%." GM said on Monday it could support NHTSA's proposal if the Energy Department rescinded its petroleum-equivalent proposal. Automakers and the United Auto Workers union have previously also complained parallel rules proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency are not feasible and should be significantly softened.

Many car shoppers say the price of electric cars is a barrier to buying one. AdvertisementAdvertisementElectric cars are seeing some of their best discounts yet. For context, overall new car incentives were as high as 10.2% in September 2019, pre-pandemic. In fact, second to high-end luxury cars, EVs saw the most deals of all vehicle segments last month. So far, only high-end EVs are running the same as equivalent internal combustion engine cars; mainstream EVs aren't quite there yet.

OTTAWA, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Canada and the province of Ontario will give up to C$1 billion to a unit of Belgium's Umicore (UMI.BR) to help it build a plant that will produce components for electric vehicle batteries, Ottawa said on Monday. The plant - the first of its kind in North America - will initially employ 600 people and have a battery materials production capacity of 35 gigawatt hours annually. Canada, home to a large mining sector for minerals such as lithium, nickel and cobalt, wants to woo firms involved in all levels of the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain via a multibillion-dollar green technology. The Umicore plant is due to be built in stages and could be worth C$2.7 billion when fully completed. Canada will invest up to C$551.3 billion with Ontario adding up to C$424.6 billion.

The rules for how electric car buyers receive federal tax credits have changed. But there are caveats that EV shoppers should be aware of, experts say. Throughout 2023, car shoppers have been able to take advantage of revised EV tax credits incentivizing them to buy plug-in. But instead of receiving a rebate, they'd lose whatever amount of the used EV tax credit they were owed, if they owed fewer taxes than that. But shoppers should also beware that dealers could drive used EV prices up next year, given that the discount rules might incentivize shoppers to buy.

Annual trade between Britain and South Korea is worth 18 billion pounds ($21.9 billion), and the two sides will begin talks later this year on a new trade deal. Britain's minister for international trade, Nigel Huddleston, said extending the tariff-free period would provide welcome certainty for businesses. But there's one thing Black has had on his mind lately: That Tesla is wasting money on price cuts to keep growth rates high. At the same time, the major price cuts continue as Musk's primary strategy to drum up more interest in Teslas. Overall, the price cuts over the past year have shaved revenue by much more, Ives estimated. In effect, Black argues that Tesla price cuts are a de facto marketing expense, saying Tesla's share losses among EVs by Tesla this year suggest price cuts alone aren't working.

Japan aims to cut total carbon emissions by 46% by 2030 from 2013 levels, and has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2050. In Japan, those difficulties are made worse by the already-strained state of the national power system due to the sharp drop in nuclear power generation since the 2011 Fukushima disaster. Over the longer term, Japan is also targeting increases in wind power generation, especially from offshore sites. SEOUL, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Kia Corp (000270.KS) on Thursday unveiled three new small-to-medium sized electric vehicles (EV) to attract a wider range of customers in an effort to expedite its electrification strategies. The production of the EV5 will take place in both China and South Korea, Kia said, adding that the EV5 in China and South Korea would have different battery types. Kia did not disclose the detailed driving range of the EV5 for South Korea, adding that it will be tailored to meet market demands. Analysts said Kia's push to launch more affordable EVs is timely as an increasing number of car buyers are looking to purchase price friendly EVs. "While those early adopters have preferred more expensive premium electric vehicles, as EVs have become more popular among more general public, consumer needs for more affordable EVs have significantly grown," said Lee Jae-il, an analyst at Eugene Investment & Securities.

Reuters GraphicsSeptember is traditionally a bumper month for car sales in China, partly because many people go on a shopping spree ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays. CPCA Secretary General Cui Dongshu said the downturn in the property market bode well for car sales, as many people were now choosing to buy cars instead of investing in housing. In fact, auto loan interest rates are the highest they’ve been since 2007, when the world was heading into a massive financial crisis. More than 70% of buyers of new large SUVs now have monthly payments over $1,000. Keep it shortPeople often try to reduce their monthly payments by taking out longer loans. Spreading the payments over more years can keep the monthly amount lower, but it means you’re paying more in interest. Leasing is another way to keep monthly payments down.
