But as a general rule, economists tend to agree that, for U.S. consumers, higher tariffs tend to mean higher prices. "They'll be buying things at higher prices than they otherwise would." Still, a number of organizations say that Trump's new tariff policy would have a negative tangible effect on American consumers' finances. Plus, financial experts say a more aggressive tariff policy could be viewed as a form of economic saber-rattling. It tends to lead to higher prices for consumers in both countries."

CNN —The Biden administration is expected on Friday to announce a major effort to blunt the global influence of RT and expose what it says is the Russian state media network’s key role in the Kremlin’s global intelligence and influence operations, according to a senior administration official and three other sources familiar with the matter. A key finding from the new US intelligence is that, for more than a year, the Russian government has quietly embedded an intelligence-gathering unit within RT that is focused on influence operations globally, one of the sources familiar said. That activity has been part of US officials described as a big expansion of RT’s role as an arm and mouthpiece of the Kremlin abroad. The activity goes beyond propaganda and covert influence operations to even include military procurement, the source said. The US believes RT propaganda and disinformation has been key to generating pro-Russia reactions to the Ukraine war globally, the senior administration official said.

In the first college admissions process since the Supreme Court struck down affirmative action last year, Asian American enrollment at the most prestigious U.S. schools paints a mixed, uneven picture. Columbia University — which, unlike the other Ivies, groups Pacific Islanders with Asian Americans — saw an increase of nine percentage points in its enrollment of Asian American applicants, while Brown saw an increase of four percentage points. It doesn’t mean that race is entirely ruled out of the admissions process, however. Poon, who is the author of “Asian American is Not a Color: Conversations about Race, Affirmative Action, and Family,” said that with race masked in the admissions process, concerns around biases are actually more prevalent. And it’s going to be difficult to determine, for example, why there were drops in Asian American enrollment at some schools as well.

WASHINGTON — White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Thursday slammed Donald Trump’s association with right-wing conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer, who has become an increasing presence alongside the former president as he seeks a second term. “No leader should ever associate with someone who spreads this kind of ugliness, this kind of racist poison,” Jean-Pierre said at a press briefing. Jean-Pierre was asked during the daily White House briefing on Thursday afternoon for President Joe Biden’s response to a racist post this week in which Loomer targeted Harris’ Indian heritage. The bill — the Social Security Fairness Act — would repeal two rules that reduce Social Security benefits for workers and spouses, widows and widowers who also receive pension income. If brought to the House floor, the Social Security Fairness Act may pass, based on the 327 co-sponsors who are currently behind the proposal. The government pension offset reduces Social Security benefits for spouses, widows and widowers who also have pension income. But if she retirees and begins collecting the pension benefits she earned, that Social Security income may disappear. Eliminating the rules through the Social Security Fairness Act would also cost the program at a time when Social Security faces looming trust fund depletion dates, he said.

Even though Latinos in the U.S. have become more aware of the word "Latinx," about half of the Hispanic population still has never heard of the gender-neutral alternative, the Pew Research Center found in a study published Thursday. The number of Latinos who have heard of "Latinx" has nearly doubled since 2019, when only 23% of the Hispanic population reported being aware of it. Now, almost half of the U.S. Latino population (47%) say they have heard of "Latinx," according to the study. The share of the Hispanic population who use "Latinx" to describe themselves remained statistically unchanged from 2019 to 2023. Only 3% of the Hispanic population nationwide used the word to describe themselves in 2019, which rose to 4% in 2023.

New York City’s Noguchi Museum said on Wednesday it fired three employees after they violated its updated dress code by wearing keffiyeh head scarves, which have become an emblem of solidarity with the Palestinian cause. Across the world in protests demanding an end to Israel’s war in Gaza, demonstrators have worn the black-and-white keffiyeh head scarf, saying it identifies with Palestinian self-determination. Israel’s supporters say it is provocative and a sign of backing extremism. Natalie Cappellini, one of the three gallery attendants who was fired, took to Instagram to say the museum leadership was weaponizing the term “political” against the Palestinian cause. A New York City hospital fired a Palestinian American nurse in May after she called Israel’s actions in Gaza a “genocide” during an acceptance speech for an award.

Taking a high dose of ADHD drugs is linked to more than five times greater risk of developing psychosis or mania, according to a new study published Thursday in the American Journal of Psychiatry. The research is among the first to find a relationship between escalating doses of the drugs — amphetamines, in particular — and a greater likelihood of psychotic symptoms. The drugs include Adderall, Vyvanse and generic amphetamines, such as dextroamphetamine. The medium dosage — 20 mg to 40 mg of Adderall, 50 mg to 100 mg of Vyvanse or 15 mg to 30 mg of dextroamphetamine — was linked to a 3.5 times higher risk. There was no increased risk of psychosis with another ADHD drug, Ritalin, which isn’t an amphetamine.

American lawmakers have passed a bipartisan bill that could eventually lead to the shuttering of Hong Kong's U.S.-based trade offices, drawing strong condemnation from the Chinese-ruled city and Beijing. The legislation, the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office Certification (HKETO) Act, was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives with overwhelming support on Tuesday. If it passes the Senate and is signed into law, HKETO would require the U.S. secretary of state to annually review the "privileges, exemptions and immunities" granted to Hong Kong's Economic and Trade Offices. Beijing strongly condemned the act's passing on Wednesday, accusing the U.S. of politicizing normal economic cooperation and attempting to contain Hong Kong's development. The remarks echoed a statement from the Hong Kong government that decried the U.S. for twisting facts, violating international laws and norms, and grossly interfering in the affairs of Hong Kong.

Ukraine has been anticipating a Russian reaction and a counteroffensive is in line with the ‘Ukrainian plan,’ Zelensky said. Zelensky has previously said that the surprise attack on Russia’s Kursk region was the initial step in a four-part “victory plan.”The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a statement Thursday that Russian forces had “penetrated” into the Kursk region, capturing 10 settlements. On August 6, Ukrainian forces stormed into the Kursk region in a shock, lightning strike that caught even American officials by surprise.
