Vintage Red-Carpet Looks Are Having a Moment
  + stars: | 2023-03-11 | by ( Fiorella Valdesolo | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
With awards season in full swing comes the red-carpet photo dump of picture-perfect celebrities: Hours have been spent on hair and makeup; limbs are dripping in six-figure jewels; and couture finery abounds. But on Instagram, a different, less fussy era of red-carpet dressing has begun to hold sway via accounts that serve as scrapbooks of what celebrities once wore. The 2002 MTV Video Music Awards as a new fashion touchstone, for example? A post last year on New York stylist and vintage fashion archivist Gabriel Held’s Instagram feed suggested as much, with a carousel of images featuring the likes of Molly Sims and Ashanti in various hip bone–baring, low-slung styles emblematic of the early aughts. “I feel like the Gen Z kids are at a point now where they’re kind of referencing the era that they were born in,” says Held.
When she turned around, her thong was fully visible, rising up from the ultra-low Eduardo Lucero jersey dress. Gillian Anderson's fashion choices for the 2001 Vanity Fair Oscars party have become an iconic early 2000s moment. Anderson told a panel in 2016 that the thong was a last-minute decision, not a planned style choice. But when I put it on, my pubic hairs poked through the dress,” Anderson told the moderator and the audience to raucous laughter. As for the fate of the Eduardo Lucero dress, Anderson donated it to a charity auction (sans thong) to benefit research into the genetic disorder Neurofibromatoses, according to her website.

Amanda Castrillo is a 26-year-old who quit her retail job last year to pursue a career in content creation. Castrillo gets paid up to $10,000 per promotional post on TikTok and landed her dream job at Paramount. As my TikTok page started gaining followers, I realized I could attend red-carpet events and movie premieres. The breaking point came when I got Covid-19: my retail job asked me to come back "as soon as possible" instead of taking the required days off to quarantine, and I realized that was not okay. In February 2022, I officially left retail without another job lined up.
Seattle‘A Thousand Splendid Suns,” by composer Sheila Silver and librettist Stephen Kitsakos , which had its world premiere at the Seattle Opera recently, turned out to be more timely than its creators anticipated. Set in modern Afghanistan and based on the 2007 novel by Khaled Hosseini , the opera unfolds against the backdrop of several tumultuous decades of Afghan history, beginning in 1974, five years before the Soviet invasion, and ending in July 2001 with the country firmly in the grip of the Taliban. The story is about two women brutally subjected to Afghanistan’s patriarchal religious tradition, but both the book and the opera were written during the two decades of U.S. military presence in the country, when women were allowed to be educated and hold jobs. As the opera’s first production meetings were under way in 2021, however, the Taliban reasserted control, making the work’s themes immediate rather than historical.
