A tourist takes a photo as the Acropolis’ Propylaea are seen in the background, in Athens, Greece, on June 28, 2024. Flights between the U.S. and Europe have not been this cheap in three years, when many countries were just lifting Covid-19 era rules. According to flight-tracking company Hopper, "good deal" fares across the Atlantic to Europe are averaging $578 in November, down from $619 a year earlier. Many airlines from financially troubled Spirit Airlines to profitable Southwest Airlines have cut flights or trimmed growth plans into next year, which has helped keep U.S. fares firm. Aircraft scarcity is also limiting airlines from adding many flights.

CNN —There aren’t many world champions who didn’t know their sport existed a year before winning the title. Originally from Indianapolis, Banschbach moved to Suffolk, England, for work and took up the game entirely by chance last year. “Last fall, [I was] seeing all the conkers on the sidewalks and kind of wondering what they were,” she remembered. “It’s kind of funny because I had won on two separate occasions, and kind of joked that I was the reigning conker queen. Taiwanese Coast Guard personnel work on a vessel off the coast of Nangan Township, in the Matsu Islands on Oct. 15, 2024, a day after China conducted the "Joint Sword-2024B" military drills around Taiwan. Taiwan's defense ministry said on Sunday it had spotted 35 Chinese military aircraft, including fighters and bombers, flying to the island's south on the way to exercises in the Pacific, a second day in a row it has reported such activities. China's defense ministry did not respond to a request for comment on the missions, reported just days before Tuesday's U.S. presidential election. The American Bankers Association is urging federal action on online financial fraud. Banks and the federal government are in a similar situation, pointing to each other to solve the problem of online financial scams. For its part, the government wants banks to take on more responsibility, and more consistently refund their customers who fall victim to online scams. According to the Federal Trade Commission, consumers reported more than $10 billion in losses last year from online scams. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Sunday that his government planned to cut student loans for around three million Australians by 20%, wiping off around 16 billion Australian dollars ($10 billion) in debts. The move builds on May's budget, which attacked cost of living pressures in Australia and gave debt relief for students, as well as more investment to make medicines cheaper, and a boost to a rent assistance program. "This will help everyone with a student debt right now, whilst we work hard to deliver a better deal for every student in the years ahead," Albanese said in a statement announcing the cut to student loans for tertiary education. The changes would mean the average graduate with a loan of AU$27,600 would have AU$5,520 wiped, the government said, adding that they would take effect from June 1, 2025.

Tennis icon and entrepreneur Venus Williams has racked up more than a few wins in her life, both on and off the court. Throughout her career, she's learned plenty about making smart investments and starting her own ventures, like her interior design firm, V Starr. But overall, one of the most important money lessons she's learned is "to have confidence in your own financial decisions," she says. Building that confidence comes from having the ability to make your own financial decisions, a privilege women didn't always have. "It's important to understand the significant power of financial planning," Williams told CNBC Make It in an email.

China's Premier Li Qiang will deliver remarks at the opening ceremony of this week's China International Import Expo, the Chinese commerce ministry said on Sunday, as Beijing seeks to show the faltering economy is open for business. Leaders from Malaysia, Uzbekistan, Slovakia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and Serbia are among those expected for the opening ceremony and other events at the seventh import expo, which runs from Tuesday to Saturday in Shanghai, the foreign ministry said. Launched by President Xi Jinping in 2018, the expo this year is an opportunity to showcase China's opening up and reform agenda, as the world's second-largest economy faces growing global trade barriers and domestic challenges. The European Union plans to send representatives to the country soon for more negotiations regarding price commitments in their ongoing EV tariff dispute.

Conversations around Vice President Kamala Harris, by contrast, continued to focus largely around broader and more conventional stories about her campaign. The poll, conducted by SSRS and Verasight on behalf of a research team from CNN, Georgetown University and the University of Michigan, was fielded from October 25-28. Georgetown University, University of Michigan and s3mc.org“Numerous former officers in the 2016-2020 Trump administration are sounding alarms that Trump will dismantle democracy if he’s elected,” wrote one Democratic-leaning independent. Georgetown University, University of Michigan and s3mc.orgWhen the survey asked respondents what they’d been hearing about Harris, the words “campaign,” “rally,” “interview,” “polls” and “ad” all cracked the top 10. Overall, the sentiment behind the words Americans used in describing what they’d heard about both Trump and Harris remained more negative than positive, with the sentiment around Harris continuing to dip from the earliest days of her campaign.

Taco Bell is reviving five menu items from past decades for a limited time. We tried the new Decades menu and the Meximelt was our clear favorite. When the first Taco Bell restaurant opened in Downey, California, in 1962, it offered just five menu items: frijoles, tostadas, burritos, tacos, and a chili burger. Now, Taco Bell is hoping to evoke a sense of nostalgia in customers with its new "Decades" menu that features five of its previously discontinued items. We tried four items on Taco Bell's new Decades menu (the Caramel Apple Empanada will be released on November 21) and ranked them from our least favorite to our favorite.

The Athletic NFL writers Mike Jones, Ted Nguyen and Michael Silver share their thoughts on all of these storylines and more. After Week 9 wins by the Ravens, Bills, Bengals and Chargers, who is the second-best team in the AFC? If you don’t have an elite quarterback, don’t even bother trying to insert yourself into the “Who Will Win the AFC?” conversation. Denver has an elite defense but the Ravens offense presents unique challenges that they won’t see every week. That score doesn’t indicate how good this Broncos team actually is.

As polls show a dead heat between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris in the final days of the race, news outlets are preparing an anxious nation for the likelihood that election night will stretch into an election week. Most major media outlets around the country rely on a handful of organizations to crunch the numbers and make race calls. “We’re also going to be really transparent about why we may not be able to call a race,” Pace said. In 2020, Joe Biden was not declared the winner of the presidential election until Saturday, several days after election night. Many Americans face retirement woes, lacking adequate savings and relying on Social Security. McCoy said she began receiving monthly Social Security Disability checks about 10 years ago, which are currently $1,620. Despite their best savings efforts, McCoy said medical bills and a high cost of living depleted her household finances. "But to live on Social Security — which is coming very quickly for both of us — is scary." A fifth of US adults over 50 reported having no retirement savings, and Social Security often isn't enough to cover the full cost of essentials.
