Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey announced Friday that he would seek to become the Garden State's next governor, entering what is expected to be a crowded Democratic primary field. Gottheimer has represented his state's 5th Congressional District, which lies in northern New Jersey, bordering New York, since 2017. But one distinguishing feature of his campaign, Gottheimer said, is that he is "focused like a laser beam on the need to lower your taxes and lower your costs." "He stands up for what he believes, and you can count on him to deliver," Berry said in the campaign video. Rep. Mikie Sherrill, D-N.J., who has served alongside Gottheimer since 2019, is another name that has been floated in the state as a potential candidate in next year's race.

The Texas Supreme Court has ruled against lawmakers who used their subpoena power to halt the execution of a death row inmate for his daughter’s “shaken baby” death, paving the way for it to proceed. "Categorically prioritizing a legislative subpoena over a scheduled execution, in other words, would become a potent legal tool that could be wielded not just to obtain necessary testimony but to forestall an execution," the Texas Supreme Court said in its ruling Friday. But the Office of the Attorney General quickly appealed the subpoena, which was supported by a district court judge's temporary injunction that halted Roberson's execution. After the state's highest criminal court agreed with the attorney general's office, allowing Roberson's execution to continue, lawmakers then petitioned their case to the Texas Supreme Court. "Given the overwhelming new evidence of innocence, we ask the State of Texas to refrain from setting a new execution date."

A death row inmate convicted of killing her toddler daughter is “actually innocent” of murder and should be freed from custody, the prisoner's trial judge said in documents unearthed on Thursday. The case, which has gained notoriety through reality TV star and aspiring attorney Kim Kardashian, is now before the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals. Texas death row inmate Melissa Lucio holds one of her sons, John. "So heartbreaking to read this letter from Melissa Lucio’s children begging for the state not to kill their mother," Kim Kardashian wrote in 2022. "It became a nightmare from which she couldn’t wake up when she was sent to death row for a crime that never happened.

Stargazers are in for quite the double feature this weekend: The Beaver Moon, the last supermoon of the year, will share the celestial stage with the dazzling Leonid meteor shower. The Beaver Moon will reach the crest of its full phase at 4:29 p.m. And as the Beaver Moon is rising, spectators might glimpse a "moon illusion," a period of time where the supermoon could look even bigger than normal due to an optical illusion. The Beaver Moon was named after the time of year when beavers begin hibernation. While the best viewing period will be over the weekend, the Leonids will be visible until the meteor shower ends on Dec. 2.

The man accused of killing Laken Riley earlier this year "went out hunting for females" on the day the nursing student in Georgia was slain, prosecutors told a judge Friday on the first day of Jose Antonio Ibarra's trial. "When Laken Riley refused to be his rape victim, he bashed her skull in with a rock repeatedly," prosecutor Sheila Ross said in her opening statement. Laken Riley. “The evidence that Jose Ibarra killed anyone is circumstantial,” defense attorney Dustin Kirby said, adding the evidence “that links Mr. Ibarra to that event, is lacking” upon closer inspection. Beneath the snowy slopes lay a prehistoric surprise: an ecosystem that predates the dinosaurs, revealed by melting snow before being stumbled upon by a hiker in the Italian Alps. Intrigued, she snapped photos and shared them with her friend, Elio Della Ferrera, a nature photographer. Della Ferrera then contacted Dal Sasso, at the museum in Milan, to learn more about the discovery. These environmental shifts contributed to the extinction of many species, which we may now encounter as fossils on a fortunate hike. “The past has much to teach us about what we risk doing to the world today,” the researchers warned.

While Kamala Harris made history, Vivek Ramaswamy became a household name, and Usha Vance debuted to a tepid national audience, many everyday South Asian Americans were experiencing something altogether different. A truck rammed the gates of parliament in the Russian-backed breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia on Friday as hundreds protested against an investment agreement with Moscow that some Abkhaz fear will price them out of the property market. Two people were injured in the clashes, Russia’s RIA state news agency cited local emergency services as saying. Russian media showed a truck ramming into the gates surrounding the parliament in the capital, Sukhumi. Russia recognized Abkhazia and another breakaway region, South Ossetia, as independent states in 2008 after Russian troops repelled a Georgian attempt to retake South Ossetia in a five-day war. WASHINGTON — When President Joe Biden relinquishes power in January, some parts of his legacy will be secure, while others may be undone by President-elect Donald Trump and a new Republican-controlled Congress. The pieces of Biden’s legacy go into four buckets. But it will be difficult for Trump to undo bipartisan legislation, such as measures about infrastructure and preventing gun violence, and the judges Biden appointed can’t be unseated. Biden’s immigration orders are ripe for Trump to target after he ran on a platform of mass deportations and clamping down on border security. Bipartisan Biden-era bills (largely safe)The parts of Biden’s legacy that will be relatively safe are the bipartisan laws he passed, which are subject to filibusters and therefore give Democrats the power to protect them.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un guided a test of suicide drones and ordered mass production of the aerial weapon, saying the introduction of such drones around the world requires an urgent update of military theory, state media said Friday. Kim “underscored the need to build a serial production system as early as possible and go into full-scale mass production,” state news agency KCNA said. Kim observed a test firing of what appear to be suicide drones alongside military officials at an undisclosed location. That has prompted South Korea to deploy weapons to shoot down North Korean drones. The city battles smog — a toxic mix of smoke and fog — every winter as cold air traps dust, emissions and smoke from illegal farm fires. Delhi flights faced delays, with tracking website Flightradar24 showing 88% of departures and 54% of arrivals were delayed as of Thursday afternoon due to smog. An estimated 10,000 people marched through Rotorua, about 280 miles north of Wellington, New Zealand police said in a statement. The ACT New Zealand party, a junior partner in the governing center-right coalition government, last week unveiled the bill, which it had promised during last year’s election. Coalition partners the National Party and New Zealand First are only supporting the legislation through the first of three readings.
