[1/5] NHS nurses hold banners during a strike, amid a dispute with the government over pay, in London, Britain January 18, 2023. "This job is slowly killing nurses," said David Hendy, a 34-year old nurse joining around 100 others on the picket line outside University College London Hospital. The government has so far resisted pressure to meet nurses' demands for a discussion about pay, insisting it will not revisit the 4%-5% it awarded in 2022/23 on the recommendation of a pay review body, and will only discuss the pay review process for 2023/24. Health minister Steve Barclay told reporters during a visit to a hospital on Wednesday he was disappointed by the strikes and that meeting nurses' pay demands would be unaffordable. Definitely bills are going up and our pay is not reflecting that," said Jenny Gyertson, 42, who has worked as a nurse for two decades.
When it comes to queer books, the loudest headlines may be about bans and censorship, but a quieter truth about the state of LGBTQ books reveals the resilience of their authors and commitment of their readers. The queer titles debuting in 2023 are as full of joy as they are examples of resistance, and those in the industry say LGBTQ writers are only getting more ambitious. And while queer young adult books are often the target of book-banning efforts, these titles drove the highest gains in the category, the report found. When it comes to considering a queer future, and what’s next for queer books, that’s something that’s been on the mind of Suzi F. Garcia, the editor of Lambda Literary, a nonprofit that advocates for LGBTQ books and authors. She described the book as having a “queer core” and a sense of hope while discussing issues critical to LGBTQ and Black communities.
The European Union plans to push back against the clean-tech tax breaks in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act by easing its subsidy rules and creating a new pot of money to help member states with limited fiscal firepower compete. Officials in Europe worry that “Buy American” provisions attached to the U.S. subsidies will lure European companies away from the EU and harm the continent’s clean-tech and manufacturing industries. Although the U.S. said last month it would adjust its rules to allow some vehicles assembled overseas to qualify for the new incentives, those changes haven’t been enough to allay European fears.

“Laziness is like, ‘I have absolutely no desire to even think about this.’ Procrastination is, ‘It troubles me to think about this. “It can leave people feeling very defeated and feeling like there’s no point in trying.”Knowing why you procrastinate can make you self-aware, but you still need strategies to break the habit. The types of procrastinationA procrastinator is usually a perfectionist, Yip said. “Because the perfectionist needs things done perfectly — all Ts crossed and Is dotted — it takes an insurmountable amount of effort. “Defiers usually don’t feel equipped to have these conversations with who they see as authority figures, or they don’t believe that having the conversations would give them any benefit or positive outcome.

Golden Globe Award winners Steven Spielberg and Martin McDonagh pose with their prizes at the 80th edition of the annual show on Jan. 10, 2023, in Beverly Hills. Spielberg's autobiographical coming-of-age film "The Fabelmans" won best drama film and the dark friendship tale "The Banshees of Inisherin," captured best film, comedy or musical. The Globes' would-be comeback ended like many Globes ceremonies before it: with a triumphant Spielberg. Nominated 14 times by the Globes for best director, Spielberg also won the honor for the third time. Carmichael kicked off the 80th Golden Globes from the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, with little of the fanfare that usually opens such ceremonies.

Shell’s trading update suggests the company remains on track for what analysts expect to be a record full-year profit. Shell PLC expects its quarterly natural-gas profit was “significantly higher” than in the preceding three months, when price swings hurt results in that core business amid a global scramble for energy. The London-based oil giant said Friday it experienced higher refining margins in its chemicals and fuels business in the last three months of 2022, but that trading profit from refined products will lag third-quarter results.
COLUMBIA, S.C. — The South Carolina Supreme Court on Thursday struck down a ban on abortion after six weeks, ruling the restriction enacted by the Deep South state violates a state constitutional right to privacy. With federal abortion protections gone, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic sued in July under the South Carolina constitution’s right to privacy. Currently, South Carolina bars most abortions at about 20 weeks beyond fertilization, or the gestational age of 22 weeks. In South Carolina, lawyers representing the state Legislature have argued the right to privacy should be interpreted narrowly. South Carolina Democratic House Minority Leader Todd Rutherford said any continuation of Republicans’ “war on women” is a deliberate waste of taxpayer dollars.
