Fraudsters potentially stole more than $200 billion in federal loans intended to help small businesses struggling during the Covid pandemic, a government watchdog said on Tuesday. More than $136 billion from Economic Injury Disaster Loan program and $64 billion from the Paycheck Protection Program loans was potentially stolen, the inspector general found. In total, SBA disbursed $400 billion in EIDL funds and $800 billion in Paycheck Protection Program loans during the life of the programs. These investigations have led to nearly $30 billion in stolen loans being seized or returned by federal law enforcement agencies. The Economic Injury Disaster Loan program provided low-interest, fixed-rate loans to help small businesses nd other organizations to help cover their operating expenses.

The company lost more than $100 million in 2019 and has more than $1.5 billion in outstanding debt, including the government loan. Since receiving the loan, the company has changed its name, restructured its business and seen its stock price plummet. As of the end of March, Yellow’s outstanding debt was $1.5 billion, including about $730 million that is owed to the federal government. Yellow has paid approximately $66 million in interest on the loan, but it has repaid just $230 of the principal owed on the loan, which comes due next year.

"There is not a grain of evidence that the CDC has any plans to promulgate an identical mandate," the court ruled. In April 2022, a U.S. district judge ruled the CDC lacked legal authority to issue a nationwide travel mask mandate. The plaintiffs who sued to overturn the mask mandate had urged the court not to dismiss the case. A report from U.S. lawmakers in October said the Trump administration in 2020 blocked the CDC from adopting a federal transportation mask mandate.

☆ Opinion: Trump’s case is a crucial test for justice in America

This is the first time a former American president has been arraigned on federal charges. Jill Filipovic Courtesy of Jill FilipovicFormer President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to all 37 federal charges at a federal courthouse in Miami on Tuesday afternoon. The indictment says that Trump willfully retained national security information, violated the Espionage Act more than 30 times, and conspired to obstruct justice, among other crimes. What is clear, though, is that this case will be a test of the US justice system and the strength of national institutions in a (for now) post-Trump America. Any president who is found to have used national security documents for bragging rights and flouted American law must be held accountable.

The roar of outrage from Republican leaders to that indictment restored Trump’s grip on the party after frustration over his role in the GOP’s disappointing 2022 midterm elections had loosened it. Repeating the pattern from other moments of maximum threat to Trump, the GOP response has been marked by a pronounced communications imbalance. (The poll was conducted after Trump’s indictment in Manhattan but before the recent federal charges.) At another point Trump insisted, “These criminals cannot be rewarded” – presumably by frightening Republican voters away from nominating him. Yet, Robinson believes, by echoing Trump’s claims of unfair treatment, the other candidates are encouraging Republican voters to accept his framing of the race.

WASHINGTON, June 13 (Reuters) - White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said on Tuesday that White House lawyers would review a ruling from a government agency that said she had violated a law limiting political activity by federal employees. The Office of Special Counsel on Monday announced that Jean-Pierre had violating the Hatch Act by referring to "mega MAGA Republicans" in talking to reporters last year. Asked at her daily briefing on Tuesday about the ruling, Jean-Pierre said she had used language given to her by White House officials. She said the previous Donald Trump administration had frequently referred to "MAGA Republicans." Jean-Pierre said White House lawyers would be in touch with the Office of Special Counsel to review the ruling.
