Despite that unpaid support, Johnson and her husband pay $2,600 a month for childcare and cleaning — the sort of paid village Johnson says is essential when both parents are working. Parents around the country are struggling to pay for childcare costs — which are often higher than a mortgage or rent. Here's what five other parents pay to create the village they need to survive. AdvertisementDay care for the two younger kids costs $650 every two weeks, or over $1,300 monthly. "I think there's a lot of unnecessary guilt and shame that can come up with having a 'paid' village,'" she said.

The average credit-card interest rate is now just over 21%, up from about 15% a decade ago. Additionally, as credit-card companies continue to charge high interest rates, more cardholders in debt become delinquent — and that could push the US economy closer to recession. Advertisement'The highest credit-card rates we've ever seen'Until 1978, most states had laws capping interest rates for credit cards and consumer products. Lowering the current high interest rates, and the profits that come with them, has become a priority across the aisle. Ted Rossman, a senior industry analyst at Bankrate, described the feedback loop of high prices and high interest rates as "a tough cycle to break."

Oil prices rise on escalating attacks in the Middle East

Storage tanks and oil processing facilities operate at Saudi Aramco's Ras Tanura oil refinery and terminal in Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia, on Oct. 1, 2018. Oil prices rose on Wednesday on fears conflict in the Middle East could turn into a wider war and disrupt oil supply from the key producing region after Iran fired ballistic missiles at Israel. Iran's oil output rose to a six-year high of 3.7 million barrels per day in August, ANZ added. "Iran accounts for about 4% of global oil output, but an important consideration will be whether Saudi Arabia increases production if Iranian supplies were disrupted." "Any suggestion that production hikes will proceed could offset concerns of supply disruptions in the Middle East," ANZ's note said.

A dockworkers strike begins. Back in the States, a dockworkers strike could upend an economy finally on the mend. Tuesday morning marked the start of a dockworkers strike that will shutter dozens of US ports that handle about half of all US ocean imports. The Iranian attack was largely thwarted, and the dockworkers strike could be short-lived. That's thanks in part to strong demand in China.

Here’s the deal: The East Coast port strike is getting a lot of attention for its potential disruption to the economy — which is precisely the point. No dockworkers means no bananas (or whatever), which means no profits for the companies that produce and ship them. While research shows automation has obvious benefits, like lower operating costs and fewer human-related errors, port automation does not, on its own, significantly improve performance, according to a 2018 McKinsey report. But automation anxiety is rapidly spilling over into office work, where managers are adopting AI in the hopes of replacing human work or amplifying production. As Washington Post columnist Heather Long wrote Tuesday, the strike is “an early battle of well-paid workers against advanced automation.

CNN —In the days after Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, fears ran high of a regional war. The conflict would not be contained in Gaza, the thinking went – Hezbollah would attack Israel from the north, the Houthis from Yemen, and Iranian proxies from Iraq. Israel would be forced to respond, it would come into direct conflict with Iran, and the wider war would be upon us. A day after Iran launched its largest ever ballistic missile attack on Israel – and as Israeli troops battle Hezbollah fighters on the ground in Lebanon – regional war is effectively here. Mortgage rates moved ever so slightly higher last week, but it was enough to take a little heat out of what had been a briefly red hot refinance market. That caused total mortgage application volume to fall 1.3% for the week, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association's seasonally adjusted index. The rate was 139 basis points higher the same week one year ago. As a result, mortgage rates were up modestly," said Mike Fratantoni, MBA's SVP and chief economist in a release. Mortgage rates moved very slightly lower again to start this week, as bond yields dipped following escalations in the bombing in the Middle East conflict.
