CNN —Next week, Apple may unveil its most ambitious new hardware product in years, but it’s in a product category that is anything but a proven winner. The highly-anticipated release of an AR/VR headset would be Apple’s biggest hardware product launch since the debut of the Apple Watch in 2015. “So it is great timing for that market.”An uncertain marketFor now, the overall headset market remains small. There were 8.8 million AR/VR headsets shipped globally last year, according to data from market research firm IDC. Unlike almost any other company, however, Apple can create demand for an experimental new product or category.

In adapting the series — which Ms. George first read on the recommendation of a college boyfriend who thought she might like it — the playwright aimed to retain Ms. Bechdel’s dialogue over all else. After retaining the spirit of the characters, Ms. George went on a hunt for audio cues. “I think it’s a highlight of this series that we got actual audio footage,” Ms. George said. Ms. Diamond grew up hiding Ms. Bechdel’s comics inside other books while at Barnes & Noble with her family. She was unbothered about the jump from page to headphones, saying the comic’s “rich characters” would be able to sustain an audio series.

Now, a similar revolt against Reddit may be gaining steam after a popular app developer said Wednesday the social media company wants to charge him $20 million a year to continue offering software that lets Reddit users view and interact with the platform. Reddit’s API is what allows Reddit content to be displayed to the Apollo app’s 900,000 daily active users. Reddit’s initial announcement had been light on pricing details, leaving many to speculate about the future of third-party access to Reddit. According to Selig’s post Wednesday, Reddit intends to charge $12,000 for every 50 million attempts to access the company’s data. Selig isn’t the only app developer crying foul.

On Monday, Apple is expected to announce its first new major product line since the Apple Watch in 2014. During Apple's software-focused developer conference, WWDC, it could release its first mixed-reality headset, according to analyst research, media reports and increasingly, vague references from Apple itself. The headset, according to reports, will feature high-definition screens in front of the user's eyes. But since then, sales for existing VR headsets haven't been great, usage has been worse and the anticipated explosion in successful VR software companies hasn't happened. Apple's headset is expected to be more powerful than what's out there — even current $6,500 VR headsets.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg teased his company's latest virtual reality headset, the Quest 3, on Thursday. Apple is expected to debut its competing VR headset next week as part of the company's June WWDC event. The iPhone-maker's consumer headset, which could also incorporate augmented reality technologies, will reportedly work with hundreds of thousands of iPad apps and cost at least $3,000. Meta continues to be spending heavily in the metaverse, the yet-to-be-developed digital universe that requires virtual reality and augmented reality technologies to access. Last October, Meta debuted its Quest Pro VR headset intended for businesses as opposed to consumers.

CNN —NATO officials are in a race against time to avoid the embarrassment of seeing the alliance miss its own stated aim of admitting Sweden to the alliance by July 11. Sweden has a permanent delegation at NATO and is considered a close partner to the alliance, meaning joining should be relatively straightforward. The second is that Turkey isn’t the only fly in the ointment: Hungary also objects to Sweden joining NATO. Sweden joining NATO would be the latest in a long list of good news stories for the alliance since Russia invaded Ukraine. That’s precisely why officials are so concerned about Turkey vetoing Sweden’s accession on NATO’s own timetable.

Nvidia debuted a new AI tool at Computex Taipei that targets the video game experience. One video game alone can have dozens — if not hundreds — of non-player characters, or NPCs. These characters will also be able to generate facial expressions based on the audio inputs they receive, Nvidia said. What separates this brief interaction from encounters in other video games is the way Jin reacts and responds to the player. "Although he is an NPC, Jin replies to natural language queries realistically and consistent with the narrative backstory — all with the help of generative AI," Nvidia said in its press release.

In 2019, Pew Research Foundation officially established a generation after millennials, Generation Z. Generation Z includes anyone born between 1997 and 2012. The newest addition to today's workforce is Generation Z, born between 1997 and 2012. Meanwhile, most of Generation Z doesn't remember the event at all. "We look forward to spending the next few years studying this generation as it enters adulthood," Dimock wrote of Generation Z, adding that it's always possible that new data could give researchers a reason to reevaluate these generational boundaries.

The ability to make video calls to other parrots, then, may give birds the chance to access the socialization and species identity they have in the wild, Cunha said. Parrot caregivers learned, for instance, to recognize signs of stress during the video calls and offer encouragement to help reduce any fear associated with the new experience. The researchers released three parrots from the study in its early stages, as these birds didn't seem to like the calls at all. But most of the parrots apparently enjoyed the experience and chose to make plenty of calls to other birds. The study authors acknowledge the need for additional research, as this study is the first exploring video calling for parrots.
Killer whales near the Iberian peninsula are colliding with, and sinking, boats. Researchers think they may be imitating the behavior of a single female named White Gladis. In these encounters, the orcas' behavior generally follows the same pattern: approaching the back of the ship and hitting the rudder until successfully causing the boat to stop. They keep apart," Trites said, noting that orca populations represent different ecotypes that eat different foods and display different behaviors. Or, Trites said, the killer whales might just get bored with the boats and stop taking part.
This time, he's accusing Musk of rigging the platform to promote his own tweets and points of view. Last week, Cuban wrote he did his own deep dive into how Twitter determines who sees what posts. But it's very convenient for Musk, who as Cuban points out, is the most followed person on Twitter. "The largest Twitter account has the greatest reach," Cuban wrote. Those algorithms are more influential than before because of Twitter's new "For You" timeline, Cuban said.
By 2025, Gen Z will account for one-third of the workforce, according to the World Economic Forum. Companies need to refine their approach to working with Gen Z, Salinas said, and tech tools like ChatGPT and social media like TikTok could help make them successful. In return, Gen Z can provide companies with indispensable knowledge of social media and newer artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT. "A lot of companies see culture as a secondary thing," Salinas said, but with Gen Z it is front and center. "Self-care, mental health, and global issues are important to them and, if it isn't a part of your company culture, that's a huge turnoff to Gen Z employees."
You’re probably very weird, and not just for all the obvious reasons you’re thinking of. Because, obviously, there’s going to be some overlap in the curve here. How you’re going to behave with your professor is quite different than how you’re going to behave with your friends. But it’s really kind of faceless, and you’re not really helping anybody you know. I think things are dynamic, and directions are changing, and that sort of thing.

Disney recently scrapped plans to open up a new employee campus in Lake Nona, Florida, citing "changing business conditions." What's the best age for kids to start using social media? Surgeon General Vivek Murphy that social media presents a "profound risk" for the mental health of adolescents and teens. Murphy's warning, which came with recommendations for how the tech industry can revamp social media platforms to make them safer, follows a similar health advisory issued by the APA earlier this month. That's easier said than done, especially when all your kids' friends have social media accounts. "We have no psychological science demonstrating that kids will suffer for not being on social media," Prinstein says.
The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday granted full approval to Pfizer's Covid antiviral pill, Paxlovid, for adults who are at high risk of getting severely sick with the virus. The FDA first made Paxlovid available in December 2021 under emergency use authorization for high-risk individuals ages 12 and up. Both Pfizer and the FDA view the treatment as an important complementary tool to vaccination that can help high-risk Americans manage their Covid infections and ultimately save lives. For some doctors, another area of concern is Paxlovid "rebound cases." That's when patients who take the treatment see their Covid symptoms return or test positive shortly after they initially recover.

Bill Gates said the winner in AI will be the company that creates a personal digital agent. Gates added that it's 50-50 as to whether the AI winner behind the digital agent will come from Big Tech or the startup world. The startup was founded by LinkedIn cofounder Reid Hoffman, Deepmind cofounder Mustafa Suleyman, and Karén Simonyan, and describes itself as an "AI studio creating a personal AI for everyone." And Pi is still a ways away from what Bill Gates is imagining, a personal AI that can do your shopping and help read your emails. But Pi is the best conversational AI I've used so far, and everyone I've spoken to who has used it has been impressed.
